Not what I hoped for 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 3, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Some good elevation change
some good windows for shooting through

Cons:

Hard to find hole one
only saw one tee sign and it was laying on the ground next to its stake on hole 4.
completely unmaintained- no visible tee locations, no instructions from basket to next tee,
very short holes

Mountainside Fun 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 25, 2014 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

NOTE: This course had MUCH potential. Current lack of maintenance sadly ruins the experience. This is what I originally wrote back in 2014 when it opened:

How high can I rate a course that has only six baskets, dirt tees, no amenities, and no hole longer than 275 ft? I'll give this a "3", but to be clear; this course is a fun little gem and will challenge all skill levels.

• Brand new Discatcher Pro baskets
• Each hole a unique challenge with several memorable holes
• Elevation forces a variety of shot shapes
• Cool terrain, on the side of a mountain with wonderful rock formations, towering trees in a dense New England forest
• Fair but narrow fairways that reward accuracy and can really punish errant shots
• Don't have to throw long to get pars, but MUST think and make good decisions
• Ace and birdie opportunities for all skill levels
• Fits a niche in an under-served area of Massachusetts
• Well marked paths between holes

Cons:

• Only six holes
• No rest rooms, trash cans etc.
• Dirt tees, but at least they are (mostly) flat, level, and clear
• Parking is a bit of a walk to the first tee if the gate isn't open
• No practice basket (though easy to use #6 if no one else is on the course)
• Ticks
• The third fairway can be muddy in early spring or after heavy rain
• Very hilly, wear good footwear and be part mountain goat
• On school property behind the Gateway Regional School District High School. Course not available during school hours and not a place to throw down a few beers at any time

Other Thoughts:

Won't be too tough to set up 3 temporary baskets around the baseball field to add a couple of long open holes for a one day tournament someday. Room to drop in 3 more permanent holes sometime in the future

• The first hole shoots up the hill through a gap in the trees with maybe a little left turn at the end for what should be an easy birdie... but miss your line and you'll be scrambling for par. Stay out of the "bear trap" on the right or be ready to throw a tomahawk.
• The second hole is a dramatic uphill with an enormous rock ledge behind the basket. Trees can make for some interesting lines. Fairway still has stumps and limbs to clear. After this hole enjoy the chairs and the sitting area before the #3 tee and admire the rock formation... and catch your breath.
• The third hole is a 275' gentle dogleg right from an elevated tee. Drop-off to the left, and trees right, but if you can hit your line this hole is a beauty. The latter half of the fairway is along an old ATV road and can be uneven and muddy.
• The fourth hole is a flat birdie run through the woods, with a couple of different lines to the basket 200' away
• Number five is another flat birdie run only 150 feet away, but you'll have to hit a tight line
• The finishing hole is a dramatic teaser, pretty steep downhill and only 150 feet away... just start a putter through the gap and let the downhill carry the disc to the basket. An ace is possible, but if you are not careful it's easy for your disc to roll all the way to the road and out of bounds. Pretty easy for this hole to generate a 2 shot swing in a close match.

This course is beginner-friendly (tough to lose a disc, and a great place to learn a variety of shots and course management), is a dream for rec players hoping to break par, and will still be a fun ace run to stronger players.

It's off the beaten path for most of us and probably not a course many will travel a long way to play, but if you happen to be in the area you'll find it's a fun round. As a short six hole layout, you'll have time to play it two or three times.

I fully expect in a few years we'll see some tournament level young players emerge from Gateway Regional High School.
