Best Course In the Area That You Haven't Played 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 14, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

The variety of holes is what stands out to me as its biggest plus, it felt like the course was designed to keep things fresh with different looks after every few holes. You start out open, go to some short technical woods holes, elevation shots, back to open, then back to woods. The course definitely makes good use of the terrain and keeps things enjoyable.

The condition of the course on the day we played was very good. Grass was mowed, no trash in sight, & no park goers or other players until we finished our round & saw a few people at the one playground. It was almost surreal to see such a well maintained park, not crowded with people on a Sat morning, but being out of the way has its benefits.

Some fun holes that you won't find too many other places, 15 was a downhill shot with the basket tucked below the hill that had each of us reaching for a second disc to take another shot.

Good use of elevation with uphill, downhill, and mixed terrain shots. Wooded holes are doable and not too technical but just challenging enough to be fun. Not overly punishing rough and the creek or creeks that wind through the course is usually easy to stay away from.

Cons:

The biggest con for me was the tee pads which are listed as gravel sand & that seems like an accurate description. The day we played they hadn't been raked in a while so there was a divot/hole where most people had planted their foot to throw. If the pads were all concrete with a little more length, the experience would be more enjoyable.

The park does have restrooms available in a few spots but benches on the course were non existent. Not a major issue for us, but its nice to have that option especially if you have a decent size group or just want to keep your bag out of the wet grass.

Hole 14 plays across the corner of a parking lot & over a road, which might be an issue if there were sports being played at one of the fields but on the day we were there the lot was completely empty.

Other Thoughts:

Having only played the current layout with 18 holes I can only pass on what I've been told, that the course was redesigned to add the other 9 holes and change a few things up for the better.

Honestly don't know why this course doesn't get more looks as it is well done, well maintained, and within a short drive to Sandy Creek so you could make a trip & hit both courses on one day. We'll definitely be back to do just that, once things cool off a bit.

Pleasant surprise 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 30, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Well graveled path and great variety of different holes. Plenty of signs to lead you to the next hole. All in all a great course for the non-professionals like myself!

Cons:

There are a few holes that have great overlap. I believe in the 6-9 area. Keep your eyes peeled if there are any other players in the area!

Other Thoughts:

Very poorly labeled, as far as it is difficult to locate the course. At least on a player's first time. I would look at https://www.madcorec.com/thesammy for an areial map as it will help.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 12, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Holes 1-4 and a few other wooded holes on the back 9.

Cons:

Poor design, layout has no flow, about a 1/4;mile walk from hole 18 back to the start.
Holes 5,6,7, 17,18 all shoot across each other, I can see people getting hit if the course gets busy.hole 5 is very short and easy to throw into 6 fairway, as well as those teeing off from 6 right past basket 5 .. course is riddled with blunders. Tee 16 is very close to a play ground, there is also another hole I think 13 or 14 that shoot across a driveway and parking lot, and the are several long journeys to get from one hole to the next. Sad this property has a ton of real potential.

Other Thoughts:

Hopefully the parks department will allow for a professional consultant to come out and fix it.

New 9 Holer Near Athens 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 14, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

It's a new course with good signage, new (gravel) tee pads, and brand new disc catcher baskets. Mix of open (1-3) and wooded holes. Fairly easy to navigate once you find the first tee. I had to ask a worker where it was - left front of park near the library. Open holes around 300 feet, with wooded holes much shorter. Definitely birdies to made here, even for a rec player like me. Course has real bathrooms which I needed to clean lots of mud off my shoes from going into creek (see below).

Cons:

Only 9 holes. Relatively short which is a con for some. Open holes simply wind around the outfield fence of the ball fields. Some of the wooded holes are "poke and hope", not always a clear line. One wooded hole (5?) crosses a deep ravine / creek not visible from the tee. I hit a tree and had to trudge very carefully down the ravine and into the shallow creek. Biggest con of all is hole 9 ends nowhere near hole 1. You have to traverse the entire park to get back to where you parked.

Other Thoughts:

First tee at front left of park. I initially went to the back of the park and found the 6th hole. I almost started there, glad I did not as previously noted course does not route so hole 9 finishes near hole 1. If you arrive in two cars, park one at back of park near 6, and then drive back to front of park. When you finish you'll be near number 9 and avoid that long walk back to the car. I would have given this course 3 stars except for the long walk back to car.
