A Mini Try At Tri-Muni

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Info kiosk with lost and found by hole1.
+ All 18 tees pads are solid, flat and sturdy concrete with the right dimensions.
+ The whole course is well-maintained with mowed fairways and roughage that is visibly taller but not ridiculous.
+ Holes4 and 9 finish by the parking lot.
+ A firepit by parking among the front nine.
+ Numbered baskets have solar lights attached and white wooden 'next' arrows to guide players, even though they aren't necessary! But...

Cons:

- ...They aren't necessary because you can see most of the course just by looking around. It is basically all wide open here with precious few trees.
- Just two tee signs.
- No designated practice basket.
- A few fairways cross the park's walking paths. Use caution before teeing off.
- Some of the guiding arrows are broken or missing like at holes2 and 10, for example.

Other Thoughts:

I didn't like hole6 because of how straight, flat, wide open and featureless it is. Hole14 was the only hole to feature any kind of woods, so that one was the most fun to play. As for looks, it's hard to pick wrong because most of these fairways look similar, but I liked the look of hole4 the best because it faces the Appalachian Mountains with no obstruction.

The whole park is very pretty in that breezey sloping field type of way. It's got gentle hills that are fun to play, especially in the front9. The fairways, while plain, offer some nice distance practice for newbies and experienced players alike. While you play, one bright white structure nestled at the top of the mountain will undoubtedly catch your eye. Curiosity got the better of me, and it turns out to be a bar and grille up there overlooking everything. It must be quite the vantage point.

Before I go any further, I should mention that I acknowledge that my bias is in favor of hilly wooded courses. So take that for what it's worth going forward...
As for the course as a whole, Tri-Municipal Park is unremarkable but functional. Seventeen of the eighteen holes are what I would call 'wide open.' Yes, there are one or two lines to poke through. Yes, there is the occasional tree to fly around, but make no mistake that this is a field course. I don't find that particularly engaging. If all I am asked to do is just throw my hardest each and every time until I reach the basket, then I am not having a good time.

And yet, there are those who live for such courses. If you like a varied landscape that demands a marathon of your furthest throws, then you will definitely enjoy this course more than I did. To its credit, Tri-Muni has some nice hills that at least keep it interesting. Hole8 comes to mind as the best example of that. Also, hole12 is a devious challenge involving a basket atop a hill. That's a fun death putt. Furthermore, the distances expand quite a lot after hole9 to really put your arm to the test-- especially hole18.

But to my mind, it's mostly a course of copy-paste. Sure, the bumps and grooves keep it from being totally boring. However, I've played quite a few wide-open hilly courses, and there are better examples out there than this. It might not be for me, but I can certainly recommend this course to locals and any passing player who wants to go nuts and air out their throws for an hour or so.
