Beginnings of a College Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 12, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

This will be a review unlike any others I have done before, due to this course's nature as possibly temporary but possibly permanent, and behind locked gates most of the time. Ah well, it can't hurt to throw the info on here.

The True Blue course consists of 6 decent baskets (Axiom Lite) with spray painted tees and text-only signs set up on the MTSU campus intramural fields. The fields are well kept and the baskets are in good shape. Navigating isn't an issue with the signs.

Considering that you're essentially working with just the fences of the fields, the layout is remarkably interesting. Several of the holes use these fence lines to force different plays. (2) won't be playable with a lower RHBH hyzer line, (4) actually plays through a ballfield which creates a very odd situation about 50 feet from the basket where you'll have to throw over a chain link fence, and (5) plays down a tunnel of sorts between two ball fields.

Cons:

Quite a lot of them.

First off, it's a flat field with literally zero trees. The obstacles are all artificial. I think they did as good as possible with the parcel of land, but it's extremely limiting. I feel like this course is as good with 6 holes as it would be with 12 more on similar land.

It's hard to get access to. It's seasonal, only available during the semester. Furthermore, it's only playable by MTSU students and staff. (The rules don't mention whether or not students and staff could bring one guest once campus reopens to visitors, though.) Also, intramural sports take precedence so there's no telling when a softball tournament will get in the way of holes (4)-(5).

The equipment is obviously bare bones. Grass tees are not very grippy if wet, and the baskets are decent but won't catch strongly.

Other Thoughts:

This is the start of a better MTSU disc golf course. Speaking with a student knowledgeable on the matter, the long-term plan is to get a club running and raise support to build a course on the other side of campus where there is unused space with old hardwoods and some elevation. I can say that the terrain they have in mind would be excellent for a six- or nine-hole course. Currently, this is all they're allowed to have, though.

This course could be gone overnight, which is why I have listed it as a temp course and not seasonal. Having observed it stick around since mid-semester, though, I think it's more likely it stays up in a semi-permanent state. Since only MTSU folk can play it, it's not going to reach a wide audience, and I questioned even bothering to put the course and this review up. However, I'm figuring that if this reaches one MTSU person it's worth it.

As is, the course is in what will be its finished state until support for moving the baskets elsewhere is strong enough. In that state, it's at the upper end of my "Bad" courses for having only a few holes, none of which could be considered good, and for being available only limitedly.
