2nd Best DGC in MN 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 6, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Incredibly well-maintained course.
- Very long and technical course; requires hard and accurate shots off nearly every tee.
- Arroyo Vortex baskets
- Golf carts available for rent.
- Driving net near pro shop.
- Rubber teepads on every hole.
- Several zip lines, including one that goes across a pond.
- Stocked pro shop.
- Kayaks and paddle boards that can be used to retrieve floating discs.
- 10 minutes away from the best DGC in MN, Blue Ribbon Pines.

Cons:

- A day pass at VisionQuest is $10, which is expensive compared to BRP's $5 day pass, but VQ offers more amenities.
- Not a lot of elevation change.
- Too many water hazards, in my opinion.
- Too many trees, IMO. It's only a year old, so I imagine they will clean up some of the fairways.
- The pro shop is an old tractor trailer. Hopefully they will build a permanent clubhouse in the future.

Other Thoughts:

VisionQuest is an incredibly well-maintained and challenging disc golf course and recreation area. The owner, Mike, is very courteous and friendly to the disc golfers that use his course. He gave my friends and I free passes for the next time we come out and shared with us some of his plans for the winter. According to him, there will be plowed fairways and heated enclosed golf carts for winter golf. Although, I'm not sure how practical that would be considering how many times you'll need to open the cab and lose heat to make a throw. I will definitely try to play this course as much as possible, along with BRP. It's one of those courses that you could play every single day and not get bored of. 5/5 in my book.

Good but could be better 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 25, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Two tee pads on most holes.
The tee pads are very grippy and feel nice.
Very secluded so it is not busy at all
Multiple lines but the RHFH is the preferred line for most holes.
Close to BRP which is another great course that is near.
A lot of water hazards which give it a lot of risk vs reward shots but only hole three comes to mind for me.

Cons:

It is pay to play and $10 per day which is a little high for most people.
Too many RHFH shots so not much variety.
The tee off for holes 5 and 18 do not add anything but danger to the thrower. They need to be wider and longer.

Other Thoughts:

This course was fun the first time through, but when I played it a second time, it just didn't make me want to play it any more. There wasn't a wow factor for me. I would rather have a great course with a great variety of shots instead of man made object to make the course feel different. It is still new so it could get better with time and improvements.

Disc Golf Theme Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 7, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

When driving through the gate of VisionQuest, and seeing the colors and peninsulas and dock tee pads around the man made lakes, you already know it's a special place.
There are six or seven holes here that would be considered signature on great courses.
My favorite hole is #3. There is a tight straight tunnel about 100 feet in front of the tee, which opens up over a pond with the basket about 400 feet. Right on the shore, and elevated by chain to about eye level. It really makes you commit to the shot, or else lay up to the edge if you are feeling wary.
Large, turf pads which are very grippy and have a nice subtle give. Much easier on ankle and knee joints!
Water comes into play on half of the course. Really cool peninsula shots, and dock tee pads.
Zip lines are available for a small fee! Golf Carts are available for rent and use on the course!
Nice pro shop, with discs, clothing snacks and drinks.
Beautiful, mulched circles enclosed in wooden structures make up most of the putting surfaces.
A private course, that is not too busy unless there is a league or event going on.
Always evolving: this course has only been in for a year, and the owner is open to suggestions and criticism. Every time I go, there are some changes, mostly subtle, that make the course play that much better.
It's going to be fun to see this property in 5 years....
Bean Bag Board courts by the pro shop, 10 games can be going on at once.
Good tee signage.
Uses .5 pars for some holes. Example, hole 1 is a par 3.5. I didn't know what to think of this at first, but it really is an accurate assessment of the hole difficulty and seems to work.

Cons:

This is a difficult course, with MANY water hazards and opportunities to lose discs. But, he hired divers a couple times this year to find them.
There are still a couple holes that don't have a clearly defined fairway yet, but are always evolving and will get there soon I'm sure. Hole 8 and hole 11 are the ones I'm thinking of.

Other Thoughts:

If you have the chance to see this place, don't pass it up! This course is used in the MN Majestic, one of the largest tournaments in the Midwest. Thanks Mike for making this dreamland a reality, we all can't wait to see what you'll do next!

Very unique and beautiful course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 14, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Immaculately manicured on every aspect of the course. When you first enter the grounds you get an overwhelming feeling of "wow" because it does not feel like you are pulling into a disc golf course. The course will make you throw every shot in your bag. Beautiful benches on every hole. Two zip lines that the owner, Mike, said will eventually be eight.

Cons:

The only con I can see is not multiple tee pads (if that's your thing). Every hole has just one position which may change with time. Not a whole lot of elevation changes but the uniqueness of the course makes up for it. The course just opened this year and for a course that is so new it is amazing.

Other Thoughts:

Only currently open to the public on the weekends. Best way to get a hold of the owner, Mike, is through Facebook. The email address provided on this site he never responded back with.

Destination Course Definition 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 26, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is built to be a disc golf course.
- It's not a park with a well designed course, this IS a course!
Water built specifically for disc golf! Amazing!
- Water elements built into peninsula greens, water carry peninsula, tees over the water. Not a lot of water - well utilized water.
Excellent Tees, Signage, Paths, Design, Layout.
- You can show up and play the course with no getting lost
Unique Elements make every hole one to remember.
- If you had a private course, you would want to have built all these unique things into the course... hanging basket, elevated baskets, basket set on a man made mountain!
Best disc return system I've ever seen!
- They collect water discs and keep them for return at the pro shop
Course design is a stand alone Pro
- Some courses only get rated based on the course design, but here the course design is only part of the whole experience. The course mixes long, medium and short holes. Some have multiple lanes, some have one you have to hit. Baskets are all perched in a defined bed of chips surrounded by logs. Many holes contain other elements of landscaping that give the hole more structure like the short elevated pin with long apron approaching the basket, or the zip lines that carry you from tee to basket.

Cons:

- The landscaping is still new. The sod and wooded areas still show signs of 'unfinished' and in some areas still unsafely so around tee pads. This course needs time to mature and more time finishing these details around safety as the course becomes meshed again with nature.
- For me, multiple tee locations. This seems like a designer's choice to have one tee pad, where I'm used to having multiple per hole.
- Partly an experiential thing, but since it's Built In to the course it's comment worthy. There's a Teepee built on the course off of #13 basket, and looks really cool. However, it's purpose is for 'enjoying smoked things' and have been invited in most times I've played, and once by one of the course staff. Even though some of these materials are legal in some states, I don't think this is a good for the sport. It is a private course, but this is not something to be included intentionally right on the course. The only 'pro' from this 'con' is that you can play through the slow smokers group when they make their pitstop.

Other Thoughts:

Additional Amenities!
- This site has the restrooms, proshop trailer, great parking, all around feel that you would expect as a member of a country club.

Dream Course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 12, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

VQ offers both challenge and extreme fun factor. The course is absolutely beautiful, like nothing I have ever seen before. The tee pads were a concern at first sight but there was no slipping on them what so ever. Every hole is clearly marked with signs and benches. There is a great mix of shots for all styles of throwing. The water shots are exquisite, to compliment other high risk reward shots out there. Next tee arrows point you in the right direction when needed to easily navigate throughout the course and OB is clearly marked. Some elevation shots including a man made huge mound with spiral walkway to the top, with sand to help the disc stick up there. The landscaping and mulched greens and trails are exceptional. I like the good mix of open and technical holes. You definitely need to be hitting on all aspects of your game to throw well. This is a VERY clean and well manicured course, which is surprising due to how new it is. I'm sure it will only get nicer in the years to come. The baskets are brand new red Mach X and catch very well. I would say it is hard to pick the signature hole out there because there are so many great ones.

Cons:

Bring a lot of discs because the water will eat them. No short tees yet. Only open to the public on weekends.

Other Thoughts:

Vision Quest has a lot of character that you really need to see for yourself. The pro shop had friendly people, a good selection of discs and attire. I have played some of the highest rated courses (Bucksnort, Phantom Falls, Beaver Ranch, Rollin Ridge, Blue Ribbon Pines, Flip City and all the Highbridge Hills courses) and I would have to say pound for pound this was the best one hands down.

Another Minneapolis Winner 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 12, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

VisionQuest is a private course, located north of Minneapolis, and a few miles from BRP.

Artificial turf tee pads. One tee per hole. Plenty wide and long. I was at first sketchy on these tees, but the material turned out to have good grip. Foul line painted on the end of each pad. Overall, not bad...but I do wonder what they'd be like in the winter.

Nice, new red powder coated baskets. I (think) they were Mach X. Regardless, they caught very well. One pin position per hole. The baskets were all surrounded by nice woodchip "circles".

Lots of different shots in play here. A couple holes require some thought about drop zones, which is always nice. Many water carries here, which isn't something you see every day. They also offered paddle boats to go out and get your discs, if you desired.

The manicuring here is about as great as can be expected. Well laid out tee area and big manicured greens are a great touch. Tee signs were big and colorful, with line(s), hole number, and distance. Navigation was pretty simple, with a good flow.

Pro shop and porta potties near the parking lot, as well as a huge permanent tent, bags tournament setup and other amenities as well.

Cons:

There's really not much to complain about here, but the lack of multiple tees/pins on each hole is kind of a bummer. That's not a big deal if you're somebody that only plays it once or twice, but as of now, it somewhat limits the replay factor.

I'm not as big of a fan of the "over the water" tee pads as others in our group. Hole 5, out over the water, is visually appealing. Functionally, I'm not as sold. It felt a bit disconcerting to look back on my reachback, and be up over the water. Maybe I'm a pansy, but I didn't love it. Same for the dock tee on hole 18, although we were told there was plans to enlarge the tee area. These aren't really as big of a deal as that sounds, but they're worth mentioning.

Not much elevation, but for me, the abundance of water shots kind of evened it out for me.

There's a bit of a "mini golf" feel when you play VQ. Between zip lines, man-made hills, and tepees, you sometimes get a kitschy feeling. I think if it keeps the serious/fun line it has now, it should be okay.

Other Thoughts:

I can't say enough about the crew out here. You can tell Mike, the owner, really loves his course. The "crew" out there is totally into the property, as well. We felt welcomed immediately, and one of the guys gave us the guided tour around the course. Good stuff. I imagine Mike will keep improving the course, which should make this rating go up. I have to rate what I played, though, hence the rating.

VQ is a darn fun course to play. It's not crazy hard, but there is some challenge to be had, for sure. With BRP right down the road, this is about as good of a disc golf day as you're going to have. Another gem in the Minneapolis area.

Disc Golf done right. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 2, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Where to begin. It would be difficult for me to find a negative about this place.

Shot variety is excellent. Tests your backhand and forehand and get-out-of-trouble shots.

Tee signs are wonderful and detailed.

The tee pads are as good as any I've ever played. They won't tear up your shoes because they are turf, but grip is still awesome. They look professional and uniform throughout the course. Also the drop zones have the same red turf, it looks really cool.

The course is well manicured and landscaping is great, it reminds me of Blue Ribbon Pines.

Some teepads hang over water and hole 18's tee is from the dock on the lake. Really cool features.

The ziplines are also super fun! What a blast and a creative addition to a course.

I am probably forgetting some of the little things that make this place magical, but overall it was one of the most fun rounds of disc golf I've ever played. Go to Vision Quest.

Destination Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 7, 2015 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

• There are 5 great holes (3, 4, 14, 15, and 18), that are challenging and a real rush. These holes all have water danger and significant risk and reward. Hole 14 is the signature hole and plays like an Island in the sky. Holes 4 & 15 are peninsulas that play like Islands. I love courses that have a respectable number of fabulous holes. These are the ones keep you talking long after the round. The owner has done a great job trying to delight the disc golfer.
• Another few holes are above average. And distances keep the average above 3.
• The Landscaping pops. It gives a great woodsy feeling, and definitely adds to what sometimes may otherwise be an ordinary pin placement
• Several unique features adds to the unconventional entertainment value of the course. Notably. Elevated baskets (9 & 10), floating tee pad (18), and Zip lines to the next hole (14 & 15). These contribute to the destination feel this course has developed.
• I have been to 1000 courses and never seen these Arroyo Vortex baskets. The interior chains are linked together a couple of times like net, which would mitigate the dreaded "spit out" in a close disc golf game. Moreover, the baskets are bright red and are topped with baskets flags, which I love for visibility and pictures.
• In summary the course length is very good. The design is an energy booster. The woods holes (6-13) are not as dramatic, but are a pleasant jaunt into nature. Thankfully all of the clearances are fair, or very well-spaced, allowing for some strong velocity above a cautious speed.
• The artificial tee pads are fairly long and we had few problems with length, which includes the additional foot for a follow through. It was still a bit wet from the morning rain, and we never slipped.

Cons:

• Hole 4 is a dramatic tee pad,. Which extends out over the water, which adds to the course flair. But if you're a little uneasy with heights, you might be like me and be the one person in the party, cheating a little bit forward.
• Hole 16 is designed to have a shot dropped into a group of medium "Christmas" like trees, with the flag and hole barely visible. An improvement would be to remove at least one tree, tight as it maybe, for a flat shot to have a chance.
• The tee pad on hole 18, on a dock in the water should be longer, since it requires a good toss to clear the water and position the disc well.

Other Thoughts:

• It is refreshing that there are people in the sport with the resources, ability, and commitment to quality to make courses like this available. I honestly left the course thinking, "thank God, not another course of beginner to intermediate difficulty". This course is a legitimate destination course with appreciable perks like a tent with picnic tables, disc sales, and Zip lines (with possibly more coming). In conjunction with East Bethel disc golf course nearby, these 2 courses are worthy of a destination trip.

Awesome and fun course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 25, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

This course is very fun. The holes are well thought out and it has several very unique holes. For example: One of the holes has a very, very tall basket with a well placed landing zone that make the basket normal height with scary deathputt. Missed the landing zone and ended up 2 inches from the pole of the basket, but missed the 10' straight up putt. Awesome hole. It also boasts several unique teepads, one floating in the water for an over the lake throw, and one suspended out over a lake. It is fun and bit scary to throw off a teepad without ground around it.

Cons:

The course is not finished yet. This is currently AWESOME, but will be even better when the course is complete. There are 4-5 holes with lots of water involved so if that isn't your thing then this probably isnt the course for you.

Other Thoughts:

This is an interesting course and an interesting place. It is the first time I've seen Par 3.5 holes on the course. They actually worked well and our card seemed to split between 3 and 4 on them so they are accurate too.

Pros:

VisionQuest is unlike any course I have seen before. As a traveling salesman, I play awesome courses throughout the United States including Vail, Colorado, Aspen, Colorado, Golden Gate Park in San Francisco just to name a few. I have also played courses in Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio, South Dakota, North Dakota, Wyoming, Kansas, Texas, New Mexico, Idaho, Washington, and Montana. I have never seen anything quite like VisionQuest. "Floating" tee boxes, elevated tee boxes, elevated baskets, an "island" shot, zip lines, well-designated drop zones, and more. Extremely challenging, but well thought out and not stupid hard. This course is a must visit, and as it is still being fine tuned by the owner, it is likely to only get better.

Cons:

Plenty of Variety 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 4, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course is absolutely amazing! The tee pads are ideal for any weather conditions and the Mach-X buckets couldn't be better. VQ offers a ton of variety in shots and plenty of obstacles, including trees, water, island holes, tee pads over elevated over water, and elevated baskets. The course even features two zip lines, which were recently added by Mike. The "Ant Hole" is awesome and definitely the signature hole on the course. For an area that lacks elevation, hence BRP 2 miles down the road, Mike has added elevation changes throughout the course, which is nice. For a course that just opened, it's got some great landscaping features w/ more to come I'm sure. Mike has done more at this course in 1 year than many courses in the metro area have done in their lifetimes.

Cons:

I really don't have any cons, but the course just has to "grow up." Once the grass seeds properly and the woods get cleared up a little more, this course will only get better.

Other Thoughts:

Get out to this course when you have the opportunity. I've had the chance to play it several times now and every time I have gone, new features have been added. The tent to hang out in before and after the round is also nice feature.

Lastly, I would love to see additional holes added, 18 isn't enough when you're out there.
