Quintessential Park Course w/ some distance 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 5, 2020 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Concrete teepads, solid Discatchers
Low risk of losing plastic
Good use of elevation
Beginner friendly
High fun factor
A few longer holes to open up the arm

Cons:

Low overall challenge
Challenging (relatively) hole 1 to start the course. Parking at Wenger shelter on the west side of the park and starting on hole 5 allows for some shorter and easier holes to progress through the round.
Course not segregated from other park users. Runners, walkers, bikers, picnics, cross country, etc. all come into play of the course.

Other Thoughts:

Washington Park is a clean neighborhood multiuse park that hosts a perfectly decent if not great disc golf course.
It is very suitable for the casual or first time player or as a warmup for one of the multiple more challenging courses in the area.
While not very challenging, the large trees and rolling hills are used well to create some interesting shots and create a high fun factor.

Beginer Friendly Park Course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 23, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Very nice, well maintained park setting
- Decent length variety with some limited elevation change
- Baskets and concrete tee pads in good condition

Cons:

- Mostly open holes provide limited challenge
- Simple tee signs frequently show incorrect distances
- No concrete pads for longer tees

Other Thoughts:

Washington Park is a nice disc golf course typical of the multi-use parks style courses found around Illinois. The course is mostly open, with larger trees providing sporadic obstacles in the fairways. The open nature of the course allows for multiple lines on just about every hole. As such, it is not overly difficult, but allows for a fun round where you can play the round however you prefer. It is beginner friendly, but provides enough challenge for intermediate level players to not be bored by it. There were multiple holes where each of the 4 players in my group threw a different, but still effective, shot, which is fun to see.

There is enough variation in distance to keep things interesting, allowing you to bust out the drivers for max distance on longer holes, or shoot for birdies or even an ace run on shorter holes. The sparse elevation is used well, and a number of holes play slightly up or down hill. A few holes stand out including 17, the only true par 4 playing over slight hills with the parking lot behind and a small creek in front. The baskets are in good shape and catch well, and the concrete tee pads are nice and sufficiently large.

The course is mostly open, and a lot of the holes are on the shorter side, resulting in a lot of easy birdies. It is a multi-use park, and while the course does a good job of mostly staying away from areas other park users will be, there are some areas where conflicts are bound to happen, so be careful and observant. The tee signs are very basic, distance and hole number are all that is provided, and a number of the posted distances appear to be incorrect.

Washington Park is a pleasant place to play a round. Go to have a stress free round, try a few new shots, or take a new player out for their first time. There is a lot here to like, even if it isn't particularly challenging to more veteran players.

Home Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 9, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

If you want a fun and easy walk in the park then this is the course for you. This course just allows you to work a shot in almost whatever way you want. The holes are open enough that you can really just shape your shot in the way that you want to shape it. The course is fairly flat in a nice park that has some long holes. The hole has some elevation but for the most part it is flat. Most of the holes offer multiple shot options because the obstacles tend to be bunched near the greens. Hole 12 is a nice bomber hole that is over 450 feet that lets you air out a drive. Hole 15 has a neat green tucked into the woods, while hole 17 is a nice par 4 that has a green right over a small creek. All in all, Washington Park is great for a quick round and is a great course for beginners. The course has nice concrete pads and the baskets are in good shape.

Cons:

The course was redesigned a few years ago and the signs on the course were not updated to reflect this change. The course is not particularly challenging and some of the holes are too easy. The course has long tees but they do not have concrete pads and are challenging to find. Some of the harder holes have been made easier in recent years as a few large trees came down (hole 1 and hole 17). The course is fairly open and the designer simply did the best with what was available. Don't come here and expect a challenge - come here and expect a short round with easy birdies.

Other Thoughts:

All in all Washington Park is an easy, fun course that offers minimal challenges. This course is a good course for beginners.

Beautiful fun course for all but the hardcore 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 5, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

1. Fun grip it and rip it course 2. Beautifully maintained in a nice park with plenty of parking. 3.No ravines, sticker bushes or poison ivy to be found. 4. Excellent course for beginners and kids 5. No pathfinding difficulties - each tee is visible from the previous basket. 6. Fun accessible course who play disc golf as a game, not as an extreme sport.

Cons:

If you prefer to play in dense woods or climb around in ravines, go to Eureka or Morton instead.

Other Thoughts:

It seems like nearly all of the reviews on this site are written by hardcore, young players who like extreme sports. If you just like a nice day out, throwing the disc and making some pars or maybe birdies, without getting covered in mud or stickers, this is the course for you.

Exceeded Expectations 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 11, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

The friend that took me to Washington Park DGC described it as being very open, and therefore I thought that I was in store for a boring round, but I quickly realized that this course would offer a lot of fun shots when I got to the first tee and saw a nice big drive with some interesting obstacles making me think about my throw! Enjoyable features of the course:

*Good variety of distances, with two sets of tees (though the shorter tees seemed to be the only concrete ones)

*Every hole had at least a moderate amount of challenging obstacles

*Very large, nice park

*Probably will not lose a disc at this course

Cons:

This course isn't a championship caliber course because

*The pro tees aren't concrete!

*The holes are easy enought that an experienced dg-er can easily go into a round expecting to get a few deuces (from the concrete tees), which kind of made me feel less happy about getting them

*Signage was not perfect... no indication of the fairway or picture of the hole, and some of them seemed slightly inaccurate

Other Thoughts:

In all, I really enjoyed this course. It was pleasant disc golf where I could let loose a couple drives and try some interesting lines. It was exciting to have a few ace runs, but also exciting to have a few holes where a three was not easy. In all, a very fun round!

If your in the area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

-park is nice, fairways were mowed. -had newer Disc Catchers installed, I prefer Mach 3 but to some this would be a pro. -Nice concrete tee-pads.

Cons:

-Too open, most holes only required a hyzer to get into deuce range, made for a boring round. -because of the lack of trees it was very windy. -no water, and only a porta pottie at the parking lot. -Signage not very informative other than hole # and feet to basket, minor con, but con non the less.

Other Thoughts:

-If a beginner and in Peoria area this course would be a nice option. If your experienced player peoria has a bunch of other courses, Mcnaughton (a.k.a. McNasty), Icc, Eureka, Bradley, that would be more fun and challenging to you.

Open 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 22, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course plays through an open grassy park with scattered mature trees. There are some rolling hills, and they add some interest and variety to the course, and come into play on most of the holes. The design tries to incorporate the available trees as much as possible to force different lines and keep it from being totally wide open. There is nice variety of distances from ace run holes to a couple longer shots where you'll pull out a distance driver. There are good concrete tee pads, and the baskets are in nice shape.

Cons:

The course is too open to offer much of a challenge, most holes only have one or two trees in play to avoid and that gets pretty repetitive after a while. As a RHBH thrower, I was able to throw a hyzer on nearly all the holes, and it looked like a hyzer route for lefties was just as available on most. The walking path comes into play on a couple holes, though the course avoids it for the most part, just a couple spots where you need to watch out for pedestrians. Navigation is a little difficult in a couple spots, there's some backtracking after some holes. The tee signs are pretty useless, they have only distance and that was often wrong. The long tees are natural and not very easy to find.

Other Thoughts:

This is definitely a beginner friendly course. Only a few holes have much length, and there isn't much chance of getting into any kind of trouble with an errant drive. There are enough trees that a beginner will be encouraged to try some different shots, but not enough that it will get frustrating. More experienced players won't find much challenge here. With most holes fairly open and a reachable distance, there are lots of easy birdies out here. It's not a bad place to get a quick round in, but don't go out of your way for this one.

Pros:

Washington Park is a very well kept neighborhood Park. It's pretty quiet and peaceful. The grass is mowed nicely and this park is scattered with large mature trees. There are some minor rolling hills in a few places.

Nice cement tee pads.

The course flows nicely and it's easy to navigate.

Long and short tees. There is a nice variety on open shots on this course.

Very good beginner course.

Cons:

Pretty wide open with lack of obstacles.

The long tee pads are natural and can be difficult to find.

Other Thoughts:

If you play Washington make sure you make the drive to Eureka to play.

I would not drive to far out of the way to play this course.

Pretty city park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 7, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

-This was a really pretty park, nicely maintained with a small smattering of trees thrown in to make you think about it.
-Easy to follow design, navigation only a probelem in 1 or 2 places (where you have to cross the walking path.)
-Some nice challenging holes (#1(tree on left and pines on right make it a tough straight shot or a huge annie, 7(I think?), 17 only real multishot hole)
-Some decent slight elevation changes across the walking path.
Nice concrete pads

Cons:

-Signs were insufficient (6x6 posts with hole # and yardage carved in, they didn't depict the hole and most of the yardages were off.
-Except for a few holes, no real challenging holes: most were under 280 and had no real obstacles
-Multiuse park (watch out for pedestrians and bikers on paved paths)
-No alt pin locations, could be made into a much more difficult park.
-Only a crappy stinky portajohn for facilities, no water, no garbage cans on course (but a few on the walking path), but a nice parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

Really a fun little course, good for a casual beer round with some buddies. Very nice for beginners but does offer some challenges for more experienced players.

Great Course for Beginners 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 7, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

I agree with the other reviews. This is a nice course (not to mention Park) that is very well maintained. The baskets and tees are in great condition. I can see where an experienced player might not feel challenged by this course, but I am the "newbie" they are referring to. As such, I can't think of a better course to learn on. I found it both challenging, yet forgiving.

Cons:

I don't have any Cons to add that haven't already been covered. And yes, hole 16 was soft when I went through also!

Other Thoughts:

I printed off a map from this site as well as from Washington Park's web site, and they did come in handy. There were a few times I had to refer to the map to find the next tee. However, apparently they have moved the basket for hole 17. The actual location didn't match either map, which had it near the playground equipment. Instead, it is near the parking lot by the 18th basket. It made the hole noticeably longer than listed. Still, I figured it out.

Washington Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 2, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Very, very well maintained. This course is laid out over a beautiful park with playgrounds (which aren't in the way at all) and volleyball courts, etc. It was nice to play here.
-The baskets seem to be very, very new and in pristine condition, as are the tee pads.
-It's obvious that there's a disc golf community here that really care about the sport and the coures.
-The grass was beautiful here.
-Very easy to find and navigate.

Cons:

-The whole park had the same length grass which made it seem like the whole course was a fairway. -It was kind of boring because a lot of the holes were just throw it straight at the basket because there aren't a lot of obstacles here.
-Hole 16 was very swampy when I played. It was basically pure mud.

Other Thoughts:

I drove out here from Normal to check out some of the courses in Peoria. I was very happy about the condition of the course but I probably won't come back to the Washington one because it's a very easy course. I also lost my Flick here on hole #12. :(

Beginner course done right 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 1, 2006 Played the course:once

Pros:

-By far the easiest 18 holer in the Peoria area.
-Lots of deuce/ace opportunities.
-Very well taken care of city park. Probably the nicest "fairways" in the area.
-Concrete tees and good tee signs.
-Baskets are permanent (which I consider a pro), so you always know what the layout is.

Cons:

-This course seems to funnel in the wind. If it is a windy day, it will be very windy here.
-The last time I played, the baskets were pretty crappy. I heard a rumor they were going to be replaced, but I can't say for sure.
***EDIT: As of May 2009, I have been told that there are new baskets installed!

-Lots of paths with bikers and walkers that you may have to wait on. The occasional picnickers in the middle of the fairway, too.

Other Thoughts:

As I said in the title, this would definitely be consider a beginner course, but it is a nicer course than any other beginner course I've played. The design makes good use of the trees available to give each hole some obstacle (though a couple are pretty simple). One complaint I have is that there aren't quite enough trees to properly "punish" a bad shot. An errant drive really just gives up the birdie, with a par usually being easy enough to save.

Tall pine trees that border the course on two sides add to the challenge and represents the easiest way to lose a disc here. There isn't a lot of elevation change, but there seems to be a couple more downhill holes than uphill, including the longest hole (#12) that plays roughly 50 ft shorter than it is. Overall, someone who can throw 300-325 ft consistently should have a reasonable shot at birding every hole on a good drive with the exception of #1 and maybe a couple of others. Someone who can only throw 225-250 will still get a deuce every now and then.

For better or worse, this course tends to artificially inflate my ego. After all, this was the first course I finished under par at, and I'm sure I've had more birdies here than any other course. But no worries; if you feel you need to be taken down a peg or two, just make the drive over to McNaughton Park.

Long holes. All 18 are a challenge. Good mix of par 3-5. Wide open course allows you to throw your disc at full strength. Still entertaining after hundreds of rounds. Park is well maintained. Makes very good use of the limited obstacles.

Cons:

If it is your 1st play through, it might be a little difficult to find the next hole sometimes. Rarely a family is parked in the middle of a hole.

Other Thoughts:

A major tournament is played there, or at least did as of a couple years ago. There are several other great 18 hole courses in the area.
