Pathways and Fences and Roads, Oh My!! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 8, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

This park course features widely spaced trees, acres and acres of mowed grass, a large drainage ditch and several small ones. These are the natural features, and they don't provide an awful lot of challenge or interest. But the use of roads and fences, and especially a winding path as OB make this a challenging course overall.

This course requires some smart management in terms of reading the wind and deciding how to land your disc in bounds. The string of Holes 2 - 7 all rely on OB to fashion narrow or curved fairways with OB very much in play. Other holes use OB to punish long shots, or to define one side of the fairway.

Good variety of hole lengths from 208' out to 611'. A few holes offered a shorter tee, generally playing from a completely different angle.

Good concrete tee pads, signs with all of the necessary information, and excellent DisCatcher baskets provide great structure for the course. Navigation was easy, with most teepads being a short walk from the previous basket. A large parking lot is convenient to Holes 1 and 18.

Cons:

The course is dead flat and in a low-lying area, so casual water is a given after any type of rain. I played after a couple of days of rain and found plenty of standing water, with much of the grass standing in an inch of water. A very soggy round.

I'm not a big fan of relying on pathways/roads/fences to create challenge, and that is primarily what this course is about. Without the designated OB there are just a lot of throws across grass, but some of the fairways are gimmicky, with Hole 6 as a standout example. It's a 283' Par 3, with a pair of OB paths pinching in to a 10' width at about 250' and widening only slightly at the basket. You've pretty much got to throw to 230' and then pitch up to the basket.

The walking path really winds in and out of the course, and I had to wait several times for a lady who was walking her dog around and around. If there were several walkers I could see many more delays.

Other Thoughts:

If this were my home course I'd get very good at managing OB. But I find courses that use natural vegetation and terrain to accomplish challenge more satisfying.

If you like OB, play here 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 30, 2016 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

+Innova Pro 28 baskets
+concrete tee pads
+tons of OB, great for practicing for tournaments that always seem to have added holes with OB
+bathroom not too far from hole 1
+nice tee signs on every hole
+navigation pretty easy
+not much interference from other park activities

Cons:

-flat, doesn't drain the best
-concrete pads are raised above grade, making it necessary to step up if you have a long runup (pads are 10-12 feet long, not sure how long)
-very open, not much shade at all
-pretty far out of the way, not many players ever on the course

Other Thoughts:

Weeks Park is deceptively difficult with the OB that is present on almost every hole. It's a well-designed course that utilizes the walking track that flows through the park, as well as the road and a ditch and a fence as OB to make accuracy highly valued. Although the course is relatively wide open, the OB forces players to dial back a little on the power in many places to avoid picking up extra strokes. This course is best played in early spring or fall when the ground isn't too wet and the temperatures aren't too hot. You'll beg for shade on this course in the summer, but there is little shade to be had, except for hole 13.

Nice park style course. Big air, big wind. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 8, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

First! For the amount of time Weeks has been in the ground (installed summer 2014), a good number of amenities have been added with more to come. The layout utilizes a large open area with minimal other interferences from other park activities, save for the walking trails. With the location of the park though, the walking trails are mostly empty. Each hole has brand new tee signs and concrete tee pads that grip well. Each sign shows has directional help towards the next hole as well. The layout itself incorporates many of the walking trails as out of bounds for on/over shots, the entrance access road, and the boundary fence to contain the course. The road and trails are major factors that come into play especially on the front nine, with the back nine containing less OB danger. The existing trees are used to good effect with forcing several preferred shot shapes off the tee though those more adventurous or with a big arm can hit several other lines, small arm players can't. Coupling the tree and OB placement, the course is surprisingly technical on the front nine with a chance for big numbers if you're not careful. The back nine offers less challenge and more chances to get some birdies but not without good distance control off the tees.

Cons:

With the location of the course being approximately 3-4 miles from the Gulf of Mexico, you're in a coastal plain with silty soil that does not absorb any rain water easily. Up to a week after a rain there will still be standing water around the course. Another side affect of the location is this course is completely flat. Don't come here expecting any sort of elevation other than the drainage ditch on holes 1 and 18. I don't necessarily count the wind as a negative for a course, but it does bare mentioning. Depending on the time of year, the winds can be completely opposite and in most cases there is at least some sort of breeze throughout the entire park. Bugs and mosquitoes can be quite an annoyance on here even in the winter rainy months so be mindful and bring bug spray. In the summer, I'd recommend a sun umbrella. Even though there are areas of large old growth trees, you're going to spend more time in the sun than out of it.

Other Thoughts:

This course provides a nice change of pace compared with the other courses in nearby Lafayette. The location makes it a not often played course from what I've seen though that's not due to the quality of the layout. In speaking with people about the future of the course, there will be several bridges installed over the big drainage ditches on holes 1 and 18 and potentially other amenities installed afterwards. This course can be fun for players of all skill levels though it definitely caters to the bigger armed players. With the amount of OB abound and potential for big winds, I would not expect less skilled players to shoot in the 50s or even low 60s. Mid-range skilled players could shoot in the 50s if they navigate the various dangers. Highly skilled players could shoot in the 50s and even go into the high 40s if everything is going well.
