Pleasantly surprised! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 22, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

+ I was pleasantly surprised by this course. I wasn't expecting the rolling elevation changes that made this course pretty fun. While there isn't a downhill 500+ bomb or an uphill monster, the rolling hills do make some of the holes quite fun. The slopes and mature trees make this park an ideal location for disc golf, so I'm very glad a course was installed here. It's remote and essentially exclusive for disc golf.

+ The tee signs had some of the best illustrations I've ever seen. The level of detail is superb.

+ The tee pads are concrete and fantastic.

+ The baskets are very aesthetic and catch well.

+ Nice use of mandos to keep things interesting and to increase safety.

Cons:

- I didn't really like how far 9's basket was from 1's tee. It would have been great if you could restart quicker.

- The design was a bit awkward in a couple places. Having to walk backwards (1-2, 7-8) was a bit irritating. I also wasn't too big of a fan of the blind shots, I think these holes could have been improved a little bit.

Other Thoughts:

All in all, I was planning on only playing once, but ended up enjoying the round and playing another. It was fun and exceeded my expectations, but I don't think I'll be going back.

Small town Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 24, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Westwood park is a very nice new park in a small town. The course plays in a mostly open area with some mature trees in play. A few holes have heavy rough lining them. There are some nice gently sloping hills that the course plays on.

The baskets are brand new DGA Mach 5 baskets that are powder coated red. The number plates have a sticker added to the back of them. This is a nice touch that should be replicated around disc golf.

Concrete tee pads are plenty spacious for the size of this course. They were roughed up nicely.

The tee signs are very accurate and look great.

I threw a variety of discs/shots off the tee.

Cons:

Hole #1 tee is located at the bottom of the hill. It's not ideal walking down the hill to start the course.

Hole #1 tee pad was installed just slightly off. It doesn't quite face the preferred throwing line.

Room was limited but I don't prefer the walk back on #2 and #8. You play the hole prior then walk the length of the fairway back to the next tee.

Other Thoughts:

I wouldn't travel too far to play this course. For a small town this is a pretty good example of what disc golf should be. It's a good addition to the area.

There is some poison ivy in the woods lining a few holes.

A good small town course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good use of space in the park. A nice mix of uphill/downhill, short/long, and right/left orientations with a couple of mandos to keep it interesting. Nice signs at every tee, some of the best I've seen in the area. Nice concrete tee pads. The designers seemed to have put a lot of thought into the layout and it shows, making great use of the terrain.

Cons:

Poison ivy near the 2nd basket, and along the 3rd and 4th fairways. The poison ivy is within 20 feet of basket 3 and pretty thick so careful with that approach. If this course got busy (it wasn't when we were there) there could be potential issues with interference among holes. Although the mandos (on hole 2 and 5) do help with that issue.

Other Thoughts:

We played this course on a relatively cool July day. If it was any warmer, it may have been somewhat miserable, since there is relatively little shade after hole three. This course is nice in that the variety and shots make it interesting for experienced players, while the relative openness make it very playable for beginners. Just be careful, as I have said, on holes 2, 3, and 4 as a wild shot could land you in a thicket of poison ivy.

For a new course, the layout is pretty good, but there is some slight overlap of fairways which could become a problem if the course got busy. The designers did a nice job of steering clear of the soccer field, pavilion and playground, although a wild shot off of two could end up in the playground, diligence required. Also, it may be a good idea to move basket three out away from the poison ivy.

We combined this course with the Hopedale course for a nice small town 18, with a pleasant Sunday drive through the countryside in between.
