Downtown DG In “Guin Country” 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 6, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

+ Wick Park is a beautiful, historic piece of green space right in the heart of Youngstown. Just a quick drive from Youngstown State (Go Guins!), this course is a solid 9 holer for intermediate level players.

+ It's the longest 9-holer I've played. Sits at just over 3,000' with a few par 4 holes in the mix. The distance combined with beautiful mature trees can pose a challenge for most players.

+ Nice starting area with a map of the course and a small trash can. There are trash cans around the course, so don't litter!

+ Tee signs are basic, but still workable. There's a QR code on each tee sign if you need a map of the hole. Mach 5 baskets for every hole.

+ Design is very well done with what they were given. Made a pretty fun course out of flat land and scattered trees.

Cons:

- Only one set of tees, and they're natural. Kind of a bummer, as there's plenty of room to put tees for beginners. Maybe there's plans for the future.

- Nothing too special about Wick Park. Most holes are flat and fairly open. No water or elevation change comes into play.

- The neighborhood is known as a little rough around the edges. No problems for me, but make sure you lock up your car.

Other Thoughts:

Overall, Wick Park is a pretty average 9-holer in downtown Youngstown. You'll get some good practice with your arm and your brain, but it's nothing to get too excited about.

If you've played in Medina County, I'd say Wick Park is a longer Poolside. It's very similar in its design and scenery, but it's a little more Taylored to intermediate players with longer distances.

Better Than Expected 2+ years drive by

Pros:

Shot variety is a huge plus, and the hole length is surprisingly good, given the size of the park.

Cons:

The tees aren't very intuitive, and there are currently only one set (white).
It's also in Wick Park, which itself has a reputation for being rather unsafe in general, though I've never had any trouble there.

Pros:

I happened to arrive on a work day, and everyone was as friendly and helpful as can be.

Cons:

Single, natural tee; single basket position.

Other Thoughts:

Course is set in a large public park in the midst of Youngstown. The course is almost dead flat, and contains a plethora of very tall trees scattered about the park - trunks, rather than branches, are what players will need to avoid on this course.

The signs for the white (and currently, only) tees were being installed the day I played. Holes were quite long for my typical-max ~300' throws, but only a few trees, as opposed to a defined fairway, need to be avoided early/mid-flight. Approach shots, 50'~150' for me, proved more challenging, as the trees would come into play more frequently.

Interesting hole include basket-1, set in a triangle formed by nearby ob-walking paths, and tee-to-basket #6 offered both a right or left, but not dead straight, option.

There are future plans for the tees to be concrete, and for both red, and possibly blue, tees to be added. However, I am rating this course as it was the day (9/22/17) I played it, not as I imagine it will become, with all the improvements planned by a dedicated crew.
