Surprisingly Well Done 9er

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 24, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

WHAT TO EXPECT: Small Park setting in the shadow of the River Valley. Wickliffe decided to spend the money on a Recreational level course that a player can grow into as opposed to a pitch and putt style 9 holer that you find in most locations. This underserved area for disc golf benefits from having a course of this caliber, despite not being a top level 18 hole course.

AMENITIES: Though a small park, the infrastructure is well cared for. There is a covered bathroom facility, tennis courts, pickleball courts, basketball courts, a playground and several shelter buildings.

TEES/SIGNAGE/BASKETS: Tee pads are brand new textured concrete, 4 x 10 if I had to guess. They felt just a little short relative to the shot distances required and were built up above the ground making running up from off the tee pad difficult. Solid simple signage at each hole, course map well done and very informative. Hole number, distance, Par and Hole map all easily discernable. Baskets are new orange MVP black hole pros. These do tend to blend in during the fall but most baskets are in open areas.

DESIGN: The designer smartly utilizes the small footprint this park occupies with 9 different par 3's that range in distance from 275-400 feet. The sparsely treed park provides the opportunity to create and use multiple shot shapes from the tee and the course does not feel repetitive. There is little to no elevation, and outside of a few dry "flood relief" creek beds, there is no water in play on this course. Very little OB beyond natural roads and paved walking paths but most holes do not bring this into play. Property line areas have some thick brush that provides a little punishment for very errant shots. Course mixes either a tight narrow line tee shot, or a small narrow green to provide added difficulty.

EXTRAS: Extremely quick play, limited risk of losing a disc, nice park despite the small size. Perfect style course for glow rounds. Smartly avoids throwing towards courts and playgrounds.

Cons:

FLOODING: This course is built very close to the River, and the dry creek beds that run between holes #1 and #9 and along the sides of Holes 4-6 show signs of deep flooding and large debris when the river gets up. This course kind of sits in a bowl and could very easily flood.

WIND: Due to being a moderately open course right on the River our round was an extremely windy one. I'm not sure if this is an always thing, or just a product of the weather that day, but it certainly made this course play harder than it would in calm conditions.

RANDOM SIGNAGE: This is not a knock on the course designer as much as the park. There was a "buried fiber optic cable" sign post planted in the ground 3 feet from hole #8 basket, directly in line from the tee. This was the most egregious one. There was also a couple "keep dogs on leash" and signs indicating what field or court that was that were convienently in shot lines on a couple holes. In the course designers defense, these signs all looked brand new and recently stick in the ground.

ELEVATION: The course really loses out on its chance at being much greater due to it's lack of elevation change, the lack of dense woods, and how shackled it is by the size of the park.

Other Thoughts:

Wickliffe definitely put money and effort behind this course installation. While I would never consider it a destination course, and the lack of other courses in the immediate area probably mean that only the hard core course baggers will visit, if you are crossing the bridges between Cairo, IL and Wickliffe, KY this could be a wonderful quick stretch your legs course without any glaring cons. A wonderful addition to the area, but saddly doesn't have the space to expand or improve beyond its current setup.
