Short with Woods, Good for Beginners. 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 8, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

-A 9-hole heavily wooded course that plays along a gentle slope of a hill. The course navigates counterclockwise around a building that host Williams Day Camp for children in the summertime. The course is also located in a scenic neighborhood.

-The course is outstanding for neighborhood families, camp participants, and those just wanting to get a quick round in or bag it!

-There are two tees long and short with one basket per hole a Discatcher, still catching good! Tee's are a mix with #7 a paver tee elevated right behind the camp building. I played long tees.

-Nice tee signs with good graphics for map, distance for both tee's, par, next tee, and hole number. I liked the graphic of the trees on the map.

-Good mix of distance between the two tees with the shorter holes more difficult. Out of the four holes 200 feet and short, I hit trees on three of them.

-# 7 and 9 have unique mando's I hadn't played on any other course. Both tee's are shared short (white) and long (blue) with a mando within 75 feet of the tee. A white arrow for short to hit the easier line, and blue arrow for long to hit the more difficult line.

-Hole #4 ranks in my top 5 with difficulty for holes less than 175 feet.

-From the bag on the tee, putter, mid's, fairways, and for the shortest hole a Star Destroyer hmm.

-Beginners and Recreational will love the ease of the course. Intermediate and Advanced will have ace runs, but may tee the shorter holes with more creativity and challenging?

Cons:

-The paver tee is outstanding on #7, and asphalt for #9. But the rest of the course tees a mix of sand, natural, and gravel were an eye sore. A few tees rutted and uneven making for some difficult gripping. Would be nice to see pavers thru out the course.

-#1 tee sign indicated an island hole with a DZ. But I saw no markings for a DZ or an island during play.

-There was standing water approaching the #1 and 2 fairways, looked a little deep and murky. Very odd considering the region had a dry winter. Out of the three dozen courses I bagged or played on my rotation during a three-month period, Williams Camp was just 1 of 2 courses with standing water. I wonder how deep the water is after a heavy rain.

-Availability may be limited. Williams Camp course is for campers only June thru August. You may only have access in the evening or on the weekend.

-Lost disc possibility on the right of fairways 1-2, and 4-5 where there's heavy brush and trees, I would think heavier in the warmer months. Then there's the standing water I stated above.

Other Thoughts:

Williams Camp DGC an outstanding course for the neighborhood and the campers. A great way to introduce the game to families, teens, and campers. And a quick round or a bag for the rest of us. I would think there are some discs in the building for the campers. I also liked the setup of the course on a smaller distance, reminding me of longer holes elsewhere. My only personnel con was eroded tees other than 7 and 9. It would be nice for newer players to have a great surface to tee from.

My overall rating is anchored on the course being tailored to new, casual, and camp players setting the overall rating at a 4.0. It was a quick round at 20 minutes.

Unique Mando's:

-Not a fan of Mando's, but I felt these were good for the course on #7 and 9. The blue arrow is the more difficult for a skilled player, both mando's are lining you up into narrow tree gaps on the way to the basket. The white arrow gives a peak for the newer player on how other wooded short tee courses may play out. The paver's on 7, and asphalt on 9 were a big thank you compared to the other tees. And the elevation on 7 was a very nice touch for the course.

Signature/Trouble Hole:

-No. 4 Par 3 long at 152 feet is a sharp dogleg right from tee to basket. Heavy brush and tall trees all the way there both sides. No direct line to the basket. There's a large tree about 20 feet to your right in line with basket. In front of you at about 60 feet is heavy brush with the same tall trees, and the dogleg begins. The basket area within C1 is closed in by brush and trees. So I pulled the same disc out of my bag for holes 5 and 8 at Northwest River in Cheasapeake, Virginia a Star Destroyer for the hyzer (lefty) and throwing at a high angle to knock off distance. Except No. 4 has a lot less room to work with compare to Northwest River. I plenko the trees about half way to the basket, and flipped an-hyzer with an Underworld to get out of the brush and trees.

A shady spot to learn the game 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 10, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nine baskets with two tees on each. The baskets are in good shape, the tees vary.
Just enough trees to make it challenging, but not to lose anything.
A quick play, you can see just about all the baskets from the middle of the lot.
Good course for kids and beginners.

Cons:

If there is anything else going on here (like day camp) there's going to be people in the way.
Several holes are very close together, so if several are playing, it could get crazy.
The tees were varied, a few paved, some gravel, none were very large.

Other Thoughts:

I've seen the listing for this course for years, less than an hour from home, but it never felt like a standalone trip, so I finally got to hit it on the way home from Farmville. After playing Farmville, about 75% out in the sun, on a hot, sunny Friday afternoon, it was nice to get here, completely shaded. There wasn't anything going on the day I was there, it was the summer of 2020, so the day camp was quiet.
There is another, full size 18 course in town (Lake Wilson), with lots of water and OB, so its nice this town has this family friendly course also.
Not too many memorable holes here, since most were rather short, either around trees, or through tight gaps, but you do have to make your throws. #9 is the longest at 255', it is a fun finishing hole, adding a little distance and having to hit a gap.
As I mentioned above, a good course for kids or beginners, I wonder if the course is used as an activity for the day camp? It would be a good way to introduce kids to the game.
Things were in pretty good shape on the course, so it looks like it gets a good amount of use.

Nice little 9 hole course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 16, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

The holes are all pretty short, and no real need for anything faster than a mid. That, however does not mean that it is an easy course. There are several trees scattered around that force you to hit certain lines and shape your shots. Except for maybe one or two holes, I don't really see anyone with experience getting a bogey very often, but it is far from an easy birdie on every hole course either.

The signage is adequate, with small next tee arrows as well.

The day I played I was by myself and only had about 25 minutes to play, so it was perfect for being able to throw a few, not end up with a 10 min. walk back to the car after finishing 9 holes. Nice to have somewhere else to throw in Wilson.

Cons:

There was a little standing water in the middle of the course, but there had been a lot of rain the day before, so I'm guessing it isn't usually a problem.

Putter Time 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 25, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Layout - Overall this is a great example of how to put in a beginner / kid friendly pitch and putt.

All the holes are short but use the scattered pines throughout to create difficulty and force you to shape lines and hit gaps. The holes aren't difficult but not so easy either so it will really teach kids/newbs how to work the disc.

This is a good place to work on your short game, throwing putter drives/upshots/putts.

Two sets of pads for each hole give you 18 playable holes and different shots.

Equipment - Newer baskets. Tee Signs have hole map and distance. Directional arrows to point you towards next tee. Decent tee areas, are fine for what is needed here. Course Map.

Atmosphere - It's a small kid oriented park right in the middle of a neighborhood. The center is the playground, picnic tables and a small building. The course plays around those structures.

Cons:

Layout - This course is great for what it is geared towards but overall it has a low ceiling. This is not a course experienced players will want to play a lot other than to get some practice in perhaps.

There could be some risk of danger due to the proximity to the playground on a few holes. Hole 3 goes directly between the playground and a picnic shelter. As long as people use their heads it shouldn't be an issue but I could see a kid letting one loose in the wrong direction.

Atmosphere - Some mushy wet areas.

Other Thoughts:

As I said earlier this is a nice area for kids to pick up the game or to get some putter practice in. My rating of 1.5 is honestly the ceiling for a course such as this so don't take it as a slight; I think the course was well done for what was there.

Pitch and putt beginners' course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 17, 2019 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This track plays around the property of a kids' day camp. The course has lots of big, mature pines. The area is clean and well-maintained with playgrounds, swings, and picnic tables mixed in with the course. It's really a dream course for kids, but even for me, as an intermediate level player, it offered some fun.

+ Beautiful property (the course and the neighborhood)

+ Baskets in good shape

+ Great for beginners

+ Ace runs!

+ Two sets of tees

Cons:

This is not meant as a knock on the course, because I think it's perfect for what it is designed to be -- a course to introduce kids and other beginners to the game -- but here are the reasons why a more experienced player is not going to travel to Wilson to play this course:

- Very easy, pitch and putt course

- I can't see how safety is not an issue at this course. It's a very tight space. There are lots of parallel (borderline crossing) fairways -- and the playground and picnic tables are easily within range of errant shots. I'd be worried to play here with kids also playing on the playground. Seems like it would need to be one or the other. That being said, the times I've played here there have been no kids (or any people) in sight.

- Tees are just natural areas with uneven ground.

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice little course that I would recommend playing if you're in the area and want to bag a course.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 13, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Solid design for a short niner with a small footprint. The course plays through scattered large trees that make every hole a bit different. The majority of the holes have two teesbut a few have something unique going on. On those tees, there is a large tree pretty much straight ahead. Players are instructed to throw to one side of the tree for the white layout and and the other from the blue. It's an interesting way to provide a different look and on a quirky little course like this I don't mind.
Yeah, the course plays around some playground equipment but I get the sense that the camp is in session only at certain times, and you would never play the course then. At most times of the year discers would be the only people here.
The trees definitely force different lines and new players will get the chance to experiment with a variety of shots. Not a bad place to bring a rookie at all.

Cons:

It's a small pitch and putt. Only a few miles from Lake Wilson so it's not a bad bonus course but seriously, no need to go out of your way for this.

Fun for all skill levels!!! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great pitch and putt course with challenging holes that players of all skill levels can enjoy. Play the white tee boxes for an easier experience or play from the blues for a more testing round. The course tests your ability to throw multiple types of shots and find different lines on each hole. The park is mostly shaded as well keeping you out of direct sunlight for a majority of the round. Very easy to navigate with signs pointing to the next tee pads where they might not be obvious.

You can tell the builders of the course took pride in the details and it shows!

Cons:

Williams Day Camp runs a camp for 5-12 year olds during the summer from June to August from 7:30am to 5:30pm. During this time, the course should NOT be played.

Beginner Friendly 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 18, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Williams Day Camp is mostly a simple and straightforward course that provides multiple lines for any skill based player. Hole 1 - White - This hole is tight off the tee, and plays right of the tee position. The basket is set on an island with the island's circumference around 40-50feet. There is a drop zone that if a player doesn't make the island they must proceed to the dropzone which plays about 40feet to the basket. Hole 2 - White- This hole provides multiple options for a player. The basket is right of the teepad, and can be taken from any direction. However, there is a ditch to the right that is about 50feet from the basket. Also there is a pavilion to the left of the basket about 60feet of distance. There are 3 trees that surround the basket to make the shot seem ominous, but the shot is fairly simple. Hole 3 - White - This hole is mainly straightforward, with multiple trees guarding the basket. There are many routes to be taken from the teepad, and the same pavilion is right of the teepad. Hole 4 - White - This hole is a straight shot out of a wooded area that surrounds the teepad. This makes the shot seem compact, but is fairly straightforward and simple. Hole 5 - White - This hole is surrounded by multiple trees in every direction, this makes the shot fairly tight. Hole 6 - White - This is another tight line that plays straight toward the basket. Hole 7 - White - This hole is one of the more signature holes on the course. A player throws downhill from atop a hill that is placed next to a building. There are multiple lines that can be taken, and this adds variety to the course. Hole 8 - White - This hole is surrounded by trees. There is a magnolia that is unpromising for most RHBH golfers. Hole 9 - White- This hole is played on a concrete slab, that has multiple lines that can be taken from any player. It is convenient because it is next to hole 1 if any player wishes to play another round immediately finishing their previous round.
Most blue tees have the same lines as the whites with the exception of hole 5.
Hole 5 - Blue - This hole is shorter but obtains more trees than the whites. The line is fairly tight with the basket hidden from view.
This course has a variety of different shots ranging from Backhands, Forehands, Overheads, and Rollers on each hole. The main purpose of the course is for newer players to have a fun, low round and for experienced players confidence to play harder/more difficult courses.
This course is located in a neighborhood which makes it easy and convenient for people to walk and play golf.

Cons:

With any piece of land that has few acres, I imagine it is difficult to build a new course without intersecting fairways. This becomes a major issue for any golfer playing the course. For example, Hole 7 and Hole 8 play almost perpendicular to each other; this means that one grip lock could result in another golfer being hospitalized. There are also other park users on the grounds, which makes golfing an issue. There are some lines that interfere with park users and it becomes difficult to throw without telling another to move. Also, during the summer, there is a camp held for 5 year olds from the morning to the afternoon, which makes golfing hard to play while avoiding rambunctious children. There is also a building with glass windows in the middle of the park, which becomes another problem for golfing purposes. One grip lock could result in shattered glass. Parking is street parking, so it is limited. If there was an event with over 30+ people, parking would become a major issue.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this course is simple. It allows golfers multiple lines and a quick, fun round for them to play. This course helps anyone that wants to work on any specific throw they want to learn. It is also very scenic during the summer and fall. I would recommend playing this course if you are in the Wilson area. Especially if you are planning to play Lake Wilson, I would recommend choosing this course first to build lots of confidence.
*NOTE* As of June 19, 2014 the course is still in development. Hopefully by June 23, 2014 the course will be playable with mixed/gravel pads and DISCatchers.
