Easy local course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 27, 2021 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- One of the biggest draws is how generally well kept the park is.
- You won't be spending much time looking for discs or the next tee. Everything is laid out well except a couple paths and tees might be a bit too close to each other.
- Extremely forgiving for newer players with the sparse trees and virtually no rough.
- While its an easy course, there are still long enough holes for full throws on. You won't be throwing upshots off the tee very often.
- I've seen some people run the course and the walking path loop is also a nice place to run if you're looking for an active day in addition to throwing a round.

Cons:

- Some holes are in spots a bit too tight for comfort. #6 calls for a rhbh shot that spends most of its flight over a walking path. #13 is near a playground and while I've never thrown into it, the wrong wind and the wrong shank could be dangerous. #5's teepad is right behind #4's basket
- Some groups of trees were recently cut down, taking away from what little shot variety is left on the course. With new lines open, there seems to be some opportunities for different tee placements that could have you throwing different angles.
- Aside from the 4 longer holes you can pretty much 1 disc this entire course.
- The teepads feel a hair too short for me. The hole info built into them is nice but slick when wet, and holes 1,5,and 15 especially are all pointed too far right for holes with nothing in the way.
- Front 9 is a lot more interesting than the back 9

Other Thoughts:

Its nothing special, but personally I like playing here a lot just for form practice. I can rifle off 5+ discs without a worry as long as there aren't people waiting for me. It also takes no time at all to play a round. I feel like im spending more time throwing less time walking and searching here. Sure the layout is easy, but this course's best defense is the wind. Come here in 15-25mph winds (which is kinda common here) if you want it to be challenging.

Some holes that have an obvious rhbh shot also have other lines you can get creative with to make things more interesting. For example, hole 6 you could throw low and flat down the middle or forehand down the left side to skip towards the basket.

If you like clean and vanilla... 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 17, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

Woodlands Park is an 18 hole fairly vanilla course set within a fairly large, busy, and well maintained city park. There is a course map and practice basket near hole 1 teepad. While there are trees on several holes, there are more open field shots than anything. Someone who can throw a hyzer out 300' to within circle one consistently could get to double digits under par.

PROS:

>Well maintained park setting, though I personally like more trees in my park setting courses.
> Good teepads and baskets.
>Virtually non-existent lost disc risk.

Cons:

.
>Teepad for #5 is 30' from #4 basket, and is blind from #4 teepad--be careful on both those holes.
> Quite busy park, with a walking path that snakes throughout the course, had to be patient several times.
> Fairly repetitive feeling after the 1st 3 holes, which are 3 of the best on the course. Many similar distance holes, many plain open field shots. Just a very low shot variety, only one tee required a true left to right shot. For the rest, a fairly straight or light fade left does just fine.

Other Thoughts:

BASICS:

>Teepads--Concrete, decent length, good condition.
>Baskets--Older DGA but good condition.
># holes--18
>Setting--City park--very busy, but other than the walking path, most activities are set apart from the holes, though with many holes being basically open field shots, others sometimes will walk across your fairway-look before you throw.
>Elevation--Other than an 8' or so hill, used on one shot, course is virtually flat.
>Distance of holes--198' - 412'. 2 par 4's in the 410' range, rest are par 3's. 13 holes are between 240' and 290'.
>Free/pay to play, type of course--Free city park.
>Ease of getting to--Very easy, few minutes off I-75.

AMENITIES:

>Parking--Plenty near hole 1, but I can see even those spots filling up if there is an event there.
>Bathrooms--Port-a-johns.
>Water/food nearby--Lots of fast food nearby.
>Clubhouse/disc shop--No.
>Benches--No.
>Trash cans--A few sprinkled throughout park.
>Bag holders--No.
>Tee signs--Basic hole # and distance imprinted on teepad. Other than hole 1, I believe all baskets were clearly visible from the teepad. The basket you CAN see from #1 teepad is NOT the right one. #1 basket is to the left, between a few trees. The distance is about the same, so it is easy to confuse.
>Next tee direction/signs--Arrows on baskets to next tee, not too much difficulty finding the next tee.
>Wheelchair/cart friendly--Yes, very.

COURSE PLAY:

>Shot variety--Quite limited. Nearly all holes are straight to light fade for the RHBH player. Not much distance variety either, with 13 of the18 holes being between 240' and 290'. It frankly gets repetitive feeling.
>Layout, long walks (inc back to car), loops--Course is somewhat of a large figure 8, but one is never far from where you start.
>Total distance walked--1.9 miles.
>Ease of finding next tee--Pretty easy.
>General difficulty--On the easier side, not many challenges. Two of the three holes over 310' are par 4 open field shots.
>Mud/water issues--Seems like it would stay pretty dry.
>Water or O/B to contend with--No, do not know if local rules play walking path or beyond as O/B.
>Difficult rough/lost disc risk--Zero. (unless you leave it on the ground like I have done twice this year).
>Scrape/scratch risk--Zero.
>How busy was course/park--Very, on a beautiful late MO afternoon. A few other groups playing DG as well.

OVERALL:

>Fun/enjoyment factor, would I play again? No--too little shot and distance variety.
>Who will this course challenge? Beginners and some rec players.
>Is it worth a drive? Not really.
>Anything unique? Not really.
>Would be a half star higher with--Better variety--maybe move some baskets around to better take advantage of trees, force some lines other than straight. Maybe some distance variety too? Probably not much can be done with how busy the rest of the park stays.

I am in my 50s, 90 or so courses played, 875ish.

Woodlands Park doesn’t have any woodlands, but it’s still a solid course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 19, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Woodlands Park is a 42 acre piece of land that hosts a walking trail, athletic fields, playgrounds, and more. Contrary to its name, the park is mainly wide open with some scattered trees sprinkled around the property. The city of Perrysburg produced Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh!

+ The kiosk area by the first tee is very solid. There's a practice basket, detailed map of the course, and picnic benches. A sign says that you can rent discs at the local library!

+ The designer did a great job incorporating trees and elevation whenever it became available. There's a pretty good mix in distances as well.

+ I really like what they did with the tee pads here. They're like the tees at Walnut Hill if you've ever played in Columbus. Concrete with a plaque showing the hole number and distance engraved into the pad itself.

+ There's arrows on every basket pointing the way to the next hole. Makes navigation a breeze.

+ When I arrived on a warm Sunday afternoon, I saw the full parking lot and walking path. I thought I was going to have to wait a ton, but the design does a great job at diverting almost every hole away from foot traffic.

Cons:

- Many holes are pretty open and pretty flat, making it a simple task for more advanced players to shoot way under par.

- There aren't any tee signs that show which way to throw. If you don't use UDisc, it might be frustrating your first couple times out.

-

Other Thoughts:

Woodlands Park isn't going to blow you away, but it's a solid place to throw. I can appreciate the thoughtful design! The course gets a lot of use, I saw 8 groups out during my round.

It's almost as good as it could be 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 16, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

well kept. nice benches. easy to get to. there's a map at the first hole. baskets are numbered. Tees have info embedded into the cement.

Cons:

no posts or other signs or markers to guide you. While the baskets are numbered, as are tees, without posts, it's not always apparent which way to go. OB hazards could be dangerous for cars. no elevation. Very open/sparsely wooded (not a lot of variation). No water hazards. No scorecards. walking paths share disc golf space - no issue with the hazard, only a less enjoyable experience having to share space.

Other Thoughts:

for where it is, there's not a lot of room for improvement. It just can't get that good.

Typical city park course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 14, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Clean, maintained park. Great kiosk maps, nice concrete tees. Easy to find. Course wraps back to the parking lot on hole 18.

Cons:

The course winds in and around (and through) other multi-use areas of the park.

Other Thoughts:

This is a decent/typical city park course, hence the 2.5 star rating. They did a decent job utilizing the space they had to work with, but holes 13-15 veer way too close to a kid's playground area. There is nothing particularly memorable or challenging about this course. If you are in the area and just want to play a round, it'll do the trick. But not worth a special trip. Most of the holes are in open grass fields, and you are just throwing back and forth in an open field.

Just a walk in the park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 16, 2017 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Park setting makes it family friendly. Restrooms onsite. Playground for the kiddies. Pet friendly. Very safe bedroom community with good police patrols.

The course is mostly wide open, with some strategic use of mature trees where available on some holes. Most holes are 250-350 with 290' being average, so its enjoyable for beginners, while having just enough length for advanced players.

The whole park is mowed grass.

Also, there are no water hazards and major ob lines that I was aware of, so this course rewards aggresive play.

Baskets are DGA's...adequate enough.

Teepads are nice concrete. Maybe a tad bit short, but still nice.

Course gets a decent amount of play, but it flows well, and I had no waiting. Playing solo I could zoom right thru 18 holes in just over an hour.

Wind is often this course's best natural defense. I enjoyed playing it when the breeze was up.

Layout is ok. Pretty straight forward, except for maybe a few holes on the back nine that dont flow well. Follow the arrows to the next tee on the basket. Also, there are two course map signs so you wont get lost.

Cons:

There is no fairway deliniation, as the whole park is mowed grass. While its nice to walk on, it leads to a bland visual experience.

Park setting leads to the occasional wait for walkers/runners to pass.

Other Thoughts:

This is a good course that will make pars possible for beginners, and all but assured for advanced players.

Birdies however, are not a sure thing, especially on the first 6 holes which make good use of mature trees, as well as several of the closing holes.

After a practice round, I shot a bogey free -6. Then I shot a -7...9 birds and 2 bogeys (ugh).

On a good day, I think I could do even better and that's this course's strength. Go out and play aggressive and make birdies, but no bogeys!

Best Course In The Toledo Area 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 8, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Beautiful and scenic park in a great area of town, just a stone's throw away from beautiful downtown Perrysburg
-2 Course map kiosks at Holes 1 and 9
-Clean Park with nice people
-Practice Hole
-Good variety of shots (doesn't particularly favor BH or FH)
-No Poison Ivy in wooded areas
-Front 9 is lined with trees that force different shot selections
- Great teepads (unlike Ottawa Park)
-Very Nice DGA Baskets
-Clean Restrooms

Cons:

A few holes cross walking paths

Other Thoughts:

This is the best course by far in the Toledo Area, and my home course!!! While Carter Park is way too open, and Ottawa Park is too run down, Woodlands Park is lightly wooded and very clean. You will have to travel up to Ypsilanti Michigan or down to Columbus to find a better course

Hole Descriptions
Hole 1: Slight dogleg left with a fairly guarded hole
Hole 2: Slight uphill with trees lining the fairway near the basket
Hole 3: Tight Tunnel Shot, one of the most difficult holes on the course
Hole 4: Large tree 20 feet ahead and to the right of the teepad, forcing a forehand shot or turnover backhand
Hole 5: Fairly tall grove of trees 50 feet in front of tee, forcing a hyper backhand, or a sneaky and risky forehand line
Hole 6: Trees lining the fairway, but fairly open on the right side, making it easy for backhand throwers. There is a sneaky forehand line around the grove of trees to the left that works rather well.
Hole 7: Wide open 411 foot hole
Hole 8: Teepad sits on the top of a small hill. Large trees line the right side of the fairway, forcing a forehand shot, with the hole tucked behind the trees
Hole 9: Wide Open 412 foot hole
Hole 10: Wide open to the right, but left side has scattered trees
Hole 11: Teepad sits on the top of a mound. Wide open hole but with a tree to the left that occasionally causes problems for forehand throwers.
Hole 12: Wide open, church parking lot to the left, but protected by line of trees
Hole 13: Throws over a path, so be careful of walkers, Hole sits on a mound which is lined with trees
Hole 14: Short hole (198 ft). Easiest hole to ace (which I have)
Hole 15: Line of trees to the left, but otherwise wide open, forcing a backhand or forehand turnover shot
Hole 16: Line of trees to the left, which catch forehand shots that turnover too quickly. Otherwise wide open, with the hole tucked in a grove of trees
Hole 17: Large grove of trees to the left, hole somewhat protected by a small mound
Hole 18: Starts by throwing over a small mound, but then is wide open, with a small grove of trees and shrubbery to the left of the hole

Gorgeous All Around 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 29, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

-The WHOLE park is amazing. Parking right by hole #1 and loops nicely back to the cars at hole 10 and at hole 18 so makes it easy to play half or full course
-Bathrooms right by start (so again can hit them at hole 9/10/11 and at end)
-Very well marked to which hole you're on and where the next hole is.
-Concrete Pads
-Good for all levels of play, as most is open but certainly certain holes have nicely played trees (and no wooded areas). There is a mix of long and short
-Practice basket at very start, but really no room around it so practice short puts, but that's about it.
-Nice map at hole one showing the entire course layout so you can take a picture if you think you'll need it later (doubt you will as it's marked clear)

Cons:

-You're close to some walking paths, though it would take a "bad" throw to actually go over a path/people.
-If you're looking for lots of long holes I'd say this isn't your place, more 200/300 range.

Other Thoughts:

I thought it was a gorgeous park and the nice crowd of people of all ages there on a weekday morning though it had quite a bit of traffic for a Wed. morning so I bet on a weekend even busier. Perfect for families, we brought our two toddlers, played the front then broke for lunch at picnic tables and playground, then finished the round.

Woodlesslands Park 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 10, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

1) Good place to go to get your tan on
2) Lots of women walking and jogging around
3) concrete tees

Cons:

1) lack of trees and elevation
2) no pro tees
3) pedestrian paths are dangerously close on quite a few holes

Other Thoughts:

There's not a whole lot to say about this course. It's got some holes where trees come into play, but they are scattered about and don't significantly guard the target for the most part. There's very few elevation changes. There's quite a few holes where you can air out a drive.

The design has some S shots, some lefty and righty shots, and a few shot shaping shots as well. Even so, after playing it, I just felt that it was "ok." Not very impressed. I don't recommend traveling very far to play this, especially when Ottawa Park is only 15 minutes away. If you're in the area and have some time to kill, then hit it up.

Play Perrysburg :) 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:May 10, 2013 Played the course:once

Pros:

young developing park with a variety of flowering trees that appear like they we're planted just for a disc golf course.

good enough sized tee pads

I appreciated the arrows that pointed (me, the tourist visiting and playing this course for the first time) to the next tee area. Each arrow was easily found near the crown of the basket on the main pole :)

Though most holes seemed to be in the straight up the main fairway variety. Each hole had it's own particular kind of charm. I really liked # 14 as it appeared that the hole was developed big mound of dirt the whole fairway (and then some) by placing and then planting beautiful rows of pine trees to on the outside of the mound to build a natural fairway (at least it appeared as such)

very clean park, with highly visible police presence (not that it was needed, as Perrysburg is a very nice community)

good directions to the park.

I liked the main shelter that was between hole # 1 and basket #

18. It had great potential for a future Ice Bowl tournament as it had a pretty large fireplace and plenty of picnic tables.

2 kiosks on the course.

Cons:

only one tee pad per hole

on the kiosk, (and this is a very correctable problem) the distances we're displayed in a light green color. So even to the naked eye it was hard to see the distances. I would suggest keeping everything as is on the kiosk, but use a black color to identify the distances so it would stand out better.

Other Thoughts:

I don't think this course is geared for the top pro player, but then again. I don't think the top pro's would shy away from playing this course as it was a very nice grip and rip type of course. That as the park/trees matures so will the courses challenges (as mentioned above the trees seemed like they we're planted in mind of the course)

Playground and walking path at park for family usage.

clean restrooms.

An OK Park Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 4, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

-Well manicured park is very beautiful. Especially in the spring when the trees are blooming.
-Some well designed holes that make you think.
-Lots of benches and water fountains.
-Nicely sized, concrete tees.
-Good signage and easy navigation.

Cons:

-Too many holes are just wide open field shots.
-Busy park and the course comes close to the playground. I've had people in the way on hole 14 numerous times. They've always moved for me, but it's still a hazard.
-Busy path and road come into play at several places.

Other Thoughts:

This isn't a bad course, but it has limitations. Unless it's a very windy day (which is fairly common in this area) it is very easy. There are a number of fun and interesting shots through tunnels of trees. However, the large number of wide open holes is why I gave this course a 2.5. Still, it's a nice play and a great course to take new players to.

Good addition to the area 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 25, 2012 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Nice well kept park in a friendly suburb.

A handful of challenging holes with serious potential to improve the rest of the course.

Abundant parking and facilities including water, restrooms and playground equipment to keep the kiddies busy.

Zero chance of loosing a disc makes this a great course to introduce people to the game.

Cons:

Full potential has yet to be realized, but the course is less than a year old.

Conservative suburban setting means "sodas" on the course are a seriously bad idea.

Course is in a busy park, and certain holes play a little too close to walking paths for comfort.

Other Thoughts:

This is a nice little course in an area that suffered from a lack of options previously. Previously Toledo area residents had the choice of driving to Bowling Green to play Carter Park (not worth it), playing Ottawa Park in Toledo (kind of in the hood and sketchy), or driving to Michigan or Findlay to find a decent course. While Woodlands at this stage of it's development is not an overly challenging course, it is as good if not slightly better than Carter, and as it's in an upscale, safe and friendly suburb of Toledo, so I'd feel better leaving my kids on the play equipment there while playing a quick 18 holes than I would up at Ottawa Park. Due to the amount of traffic this course gets from non-DG'ers, it will hopefully drive some traffic to the game. I look forward to seeing Woodlands progress and improve as it will be my course of choice when I'm in the Toledo area visiting friends and family.

Update: Lowered my review to 3 stars upon further reflection and playing again. The course has significant potential to be a 3.5 star course (at best) but my original review was too strongly based on potential, and not enough on what's there now.

Pros:

This course has nice DGA baskets and concrete tees with a small sign listing the hole number, par and distance set into the concrete. Navigation is easy and there are arrows on the baskets pointing you to the next hole.

About half the holes have some large, mature trees that are used very well to create some great holes. There's an ok shot variety here with a few of these holes forcing turnover shots. There is a good variety of distances ranging from 200 to 410 feet.

Cons:

About half the course is wide open and flat.

The road come into play on hole 5, a parking lot on 12 & 16, the walking path on a handful of holes, and picnic benches and shelters on a few other holes. Individually, none of these are a big deal, but together there is a lot to watch for so please keep an eye out for other people on the course.

While there is a good variety of hole distances, 13 of the holes are less than 300 feet long. That combined with so many open holes on a mostly flat park makes the course a little boring.

There isn't really a line up the middle on hole 6 because there are so many branches sticking out into the fairway. The only route I could find what a big, wide hyzer shot that could bring the walking path or road into play.

Other Thoughts:

The park is rather open, but the course uses the available trees well.

This is a great course for newer players (with the exception of the safety hazards mentioned above). There's not much challenge here for the more advanced player.

could be a pain if the park is busy i went to 9am and was pretty busy of a weekday

Other Thoughts:

The designers did a great job on what the had to work with ,a few trees here are there could really improve the back holes .
had a good time playing here

Pros:

Woodlands is a definite city course, and as such there are limiting factors in play. Considering those limiting factors: the course is nice. It opens with a wonderfully designed first eight holes.

You begin on hole 1 with a green protected by a heavy ceiling and mature trees. Hole 2 has a tricky angle, and no direct route. Hole 3 is similar, providing multiple options - each of them risk-reward. Hole 4 is a relatively simple hole, with a nice set of low guardian trees that make the angle to the park job tricky. Hole 5 is has some OB in play, a nice risky forehand and an up the middle route with ceiling. Hole 6 is similar to hole 2 - no straightforward route. Hole 7 allows the arm to open up with a 410-20 foot open field bomb. Hole 8 forces you to rein it back in with a short forehand requiring you to skirt the foliage to park it in a tucked in green.

Beyond the opening stretch of holes - the course has a lot to offer in terms of simple pleasures. It is a very well manicured course - the lawns are mowed, treated, and healthy. There is a very active local community that utilizes the well maintained trail loop around the park. Restrooms near the first hole are clean and pleasant (as restrooms go). There is also a water fountain at the seventh hole that has clean and tasty water. The park is kept free of bad elements by the presence of an elementary school next door to hole eight. The local police are definitely a presence - and have been spotted on multiple occasions.

It is also the only course between Ottawa Park in Toledo and Carter Park in Bowling Green. The gap isn't massive, but at the same time - it is more than the local community would like to see. For those living in Perrysburg - the drive to either locations is at the least an inconvenience. This presence should help to bring about a boost in the local golfer population, as well as a boost to the playing level of many that weren't able to get out as much before.

Cons:

As has been stated - this is a city park with limitations. The same things that make it nice, also get in the way. The number of people that spend time at the park, and could therefore be exposed to the game also make it difficult at times to throw. This fall they have not been in the way thus far, but in the summer one could imagine copious numbers of people in the open fields that several holes play across.

The open fields also make the final 10 holes somewhat boring. There is some room for improvement - but overall without planting more trees that is limited. Holes 9-18 all are relatively open field shots, anything in the repertoire is available on any of the holes, with no limiting factors around the teepads to close off angles. Several holes could have been placed closer to nearby bushes or trees to at least force a certain line. Hole 9 is longish, and therefore not a deuce-or-die - but after that it gets down to fairly simple golf until hole 18, which at least provides a berm to force a slightly elevated shot and guardian trees to limit the hyzer.

Other Thoughts:

Please don't consider the 2.0 rating an indictment - keep in mind that when rating courses each number value is given a label as well. A 2.0 rating is described as "Reasonable." - that describes Woodlands Park well. It is a reasonable course. If you are in the area and are jonesing for some golf? It is definitely worth throwing. If you're local and need a local course the front 9 provides some challenge and variety, and the back 9 demands perfection. As a course for hosting leagues? It is nice. A great place for a league which will provide positive reinforcement for new players with a real chance to contribute to the round on the shorter holes.

It will even provide a nice site for tournaments - giving NW Ohio disc golf one more location to host tournaments without having to deal with the insanity of the MDGO scheduling meeting (I believe Michigan has somewhere around 379 clubs at this point, all looking to host events on the same weekend you are).

Definitely give Woodlands a play. It is a fun little place, and I enjoyed my time there.
