2017 USDGC

USDGC doesn't get a signature disc. Maybe a special run of something like the tour series discs.

In the past, the winner got his signature on at least one stamp of the next year's run of USDGC Rocs. Do they not do those anymore?

Performance Tracks

Barry Schultz finished with 14 holes in a row of scoring lower than expected. That ties Kevin Jones's streak from hole 8 in round 1 to hole 3 in round 2. Paige Pierce had the third longest streak with the last 13 holes of round 3.

I understand your point. But there's also a gazillion branches. At DeLa there's a gazillion roots. Often enough they're around baskets.

There was a whole discussion on errorless play. Truth is, theres no such thing. Designers make courses so that they supersede the human ability to complete an errorless shot. That includes risk and some random. One player hits a tree and goes left, another goes right. Every player plays the same course, sticks and all.

For me, a good player overcomes random with calculated play and staying away from risk. It's that simple. I realize that doesnt work for you. Your options, lobby Harold, build a movement to complain, or turn off the Youtube.
Oh yeah, well Harold Duvall, designer of such masterpieces as Castle Hayne et al, agrees with me. So suck it, Spurs fan. :p
The potential consequence of hitting the stakes bugs me a bit too. I do not subscribe to the notion that it is the same for everyone. It would be the same for everyone if each player threw hundreds of shots, but there is a fickle factor on any single shot. Players can lessen their chances, but the stakes are an element of chance that I would like to eliminate.

We use the stakes and top rope as a visual aid for the competitors and spectators. As 2017 Golden Rake Award Winner Tom pointed out, we have used ground whiskers to lessen the impact in critical areas like 9, 10, 11, 13 18 and elsewhere. We experimented with a high-end line sprayer as an alternative, but the turf at Winthrop is not as amenable for line spraying as a ball field, and we were not confident that the lines would last from prep day though US Doubles, Monday Qualifying, and the Championship. We will continue to look at this as an opportunity for improvement for the 20th Anniversary USDGC. Suggestions are welcome.

Thanks Harold, it's certainly a tough issue to tackle. I can only think of stupid suggestions, like helium balloons (which would be expensive for all the helium and make it look like a children's birthday party) and stiff paper bags nailed along the OB line (which would rot with any moisture). I guess we're kind of stuck with the ropes, it wouldn't be Winthrop Gold without them really. I just wish the stakes had a bit more give to them, like if there was a spring welded at the bottom. :\

Observations from the last day of USDGC:

• These guys can really crush and it never ceases to amaze me, even on placement shots.

• I wasn't sure if I was in the US at times, there were that many Finns(?) around speaking some Scandinavian tongue.

• Someone on Kevin Jones' card, Grady Shue I think, grip locked the crap out of his drive on hole 11 or 12 (the one before the big downhill tee from the stadium, before the 888 hole) and it sailed clear over the hedgerow, over the parking lot, and on the OB side of the sidewalk. He and Jones had a discussion about where it last left IB and neither had a clue, with Shue lobbying for it flying over the tiny corner of grass that goes around the end of bushes, so that he wouldn't have to throw from the middle of a bush and lose 100' or something. They appealed to the fans nearby and we couldn't tell them with utmost certainty if the disc did graze that corner but I'm pretty sure it didn't. Jones didn't care and allowed Shue to throw from there, it was still a crappy lie anyway.

• After that happened, the lead and chase cards come up to that hole and somewhere between the two, I discovered that I was standing directly on top of a fire ant mound and went into panicky flicking them off mode, as discreetly as I could. I had to take my shoes and socks off so if you see a goofy guy in a red hat and bare feet on the side of the fairway during the lead card's final round, that was me.

• Followed the next 2 holes barefoot, that got some looks.

• On hole 14, directly after Big Jerm's drive, some guy next to me screamed "Mashed Potatoes." It was really awkward and everybody scurried to get away from that guy.

• Everybody was pretty happy for Nate, it was a touching ending to the tourney. Philo in particular seemed like a really class act and McBeth seemed really happy for Nate (kind of contrary to the myth of him being a "competitor to a fault" that gets tossed around). Ricky on the other hand, was clearly burning inside and was gutted by the loss (he was a gracious loser too, though, not trying to sound like he stormed off the course pouting or anything).

• Even though I'm not a "can I have your autograph" kind of guy (this is literally the first sig I've ever asked for in anything), I bumped into Paige Pierce and had her sign my pink Convict that was already signed by Richard Petty (player's pack from a tourney last year). She was pretty surprised to see Petty's signature on it. She seemed like a super nice person.

^I should have tried to meet up with some of the other DGCR's out there. I was on Barry's card.

So how did everyone on that card miss AJ not making the mando on hole 4? That's impressive.

That is some serious optical illusion. You have to slow it down frame by frame see it flash in front of the mando sign, at full speed it looks missed every time I watched it, weird. Gotta be the white disc and the shadows that do it.

My 11-year old son and I went to Rock Hill for a disc golf weekend. We played a ton of courses and watched the final round at USDGC. I wish I'd done it sooner. Awesome trip.

I just want to say that the players, in addition to being unbelievable disc golfers, were amazingly gracious and friendly during and after the round to my son and other fans. Examples:

1. We were on hole 6 (the beach hole), watching several cards come through (in a steady rain). Barry Schultz saw the group of spectators and came over to thank us all for watching and supporting them. He then handed my son a signed disc. Class! (This was in the middle of a bogey-free -10 round. Un-freaking-real.)

2. After the round, my son got pictures with Sexton, Wysocki, and McBeth. They weren't bothered at all by him asking for photos. All smiles. Ricky had to kneel down he was so much taller than my boy. I'm going to have a hard time deciding whom to pull for in future tournaments! They were all first class!

3. My son also went on a mission to get autographs on the disc Barry gave him. Everyone was friendly and awesome: Paige, Big Jerm, Anthon, Philo, Simon, Eagle, and Withers, in addition to Barry, Ricky, Paul, and Nate. Major kudos to all of you. You made my son's day and he's surely a fan for life!

Brother Dave I saw you barefoot carrying your shoes walking the path across from 12's basket. My buddy and I were like, whaaaa!!?? Wish I'd known it was you I would've said hi. Cool to know the story behind it now. Awesome tourney. Had a blast.

I dunno, Mr. Dunipace might favor us with a Nate Sexton sig disc for the USDGC win. XCal is probably the frontrunner idea...

Orc, beast, dart or xcal. I love Nate, my favorite player, but gawd he uses weird discs. BTW, I avoid Sig discs like the plague, but I'll buy one of Nate's just to support. That baby needs a disc golf onesie.

My observation is you were there and didn't even come to say whatsup. Don't give me any excuses cause I was pretty easy to find! :p
