My adventures in measuring distance (and other musings)

Maybe we've lost sight of the fact that I was making a lighthearted comment about the relative prestige of Jeff's ace... If i was measuring (and when I have measured) a disc golf course there would be no tape, or laser, or wheel, or gps... Aside, it's been a while since I've worried about tape...

My adventures in measuring distance (and other musings)

When measuring point to point with the tape in the air for long distances, your choices are sag, stretch, or some combination of both. With some experience you learn to equalize. There's been some interesting study on the topic connected with old geosurvey projects, but the days of relying on...

My adventures in measuring distance (and other musings)

Pulling across a valley would have stretched that fiberglass a bit. So your ace might have been 257 or 8'

My adventures in measuring distance (and other musings)

I've done a lot of surveying with lasers, and even in experienced hands there are lots of significant errors. I think others in this thread have detailed many of the common mistakes. Lasers are accurate, but hitting the right target is not always easy.

    [Other] Free discs

I would prefer to give these to new players or someone who will help out some new players. There are enough discs to build a few well-rounded bags, as well as a few cheap bags. These are mostly my throwers, so not much new and fancy. Please inquire via pm, I'm not going to list discs or discuss...

My adventures in measuring distance (and other musings)

Measuring wheels are notoriously and significantly inaccurate. Lasers are easy to misuse. Paces are the ideal combination of accuracy and convenience, you've got to walk to your disc anyway. I tested my paces against fiberglass tape for years when bidding and billing jobs. I don't bother with...

Any advice for controlling emotions during a round?

Most extremely competitive people have fundamental emotional sicknesses. You can't fix them as manifest in disc golf without addressing underlying problems. The way you treat other people is fifty million times more important than how well you play disc golf. Get your values in order and your...

Turning discs over FH but not BH.

It's common to see more turn FH due to more wobble and different spin: speed ratios. As a disc gets less stable it makes sense that the difference will become more pronounced.

    Mentally broken after first tourney

    Mentally broken after first tourney

To demonstrate that this kind of talk is by now platitudinous, I recall a passage from quite a while back: When remedies are past, the griefs are ended By seeing the worst, which late on hopes depended. To mourn a mischief that is past and gone Is the next way to draw new mischief on. What...

    Mentally broken after first tourney

Of course not! That judgment was based on the dramatic original post, and thread title. Maybe it was wrong.

I only meant that I don't think "sports psychology," or whatever it's called, treats the underlying causes of emotional immaturity.

Best method for removing stickers from bands?

Applying heat helps get off stickers whole sometimes. Try a few gentle passes with a lighter, don't scorch the paint. Brake cleaner is good for getting sticky stuff off, but bad for paint. Might be good for the pole.

    Mentally broken after first tourney

Similarly but in contrast too, I focus my energy on the walk and try to enjoy the short intervals of flight. It's not worth being outside for hours just to throw discs. Make the time out there count for something. Look around.
