Short steep fun

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 24, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

Eureka DGC is the most physically demanding 937-foot course I have ever played, and I had a blast playing here. Hole distances range from 76 to 167 feet, but fairways may rise or fall 30 feet per hole. Personal note: ego takes a hit when you need a midrange to reach a 100-foot hole.

Eureka has nine 100% wooded holes with tight but fair lines that have been carved through the verdant rainforest. If you can navigate the combination of trees and steep slopes, there are many ace runs to be had (but see cons). Course is located on the University of Alaska South campus, with parking by the path to hole #1.

Bright blue post-mounted tee signs list distance, elevation change, and par. No hole maps but with a little squinting I was able to spot all but one basket from the tee. DGA baskets were mounted level and caught well, but could use a brightly colored flag to aid visibility.

Navigation was reasonably straightforward with tees often close to the previous basket and small blue "next tee" arrows mounted in key locations. I probably checked the GPS map once or twice during my round.

Stairs have been installed to traverse some of the steepest slopes, but stairs in other areas would be beneficial.

Cons:

I played during a drought, but even in dry conditions some of the steep slopes were challenging for this old guy. I would expect that this course could be treacherous in wet conditions, which are likely to be common in Juneau's temperate rainforest climate.

Teepads were a mix of natural, loose wood slats, and gravel. The gravel tees were the nicest, and I hope more tees are improved over time. Teepads were also short, but throwing standstill was not a problem because of the short hole distances.

Risk of disc loss is moderate. The tree canopy keeps undergrowth somewhat thinned out, but there are definitely places a disc can hide. I lost a disc by ace-running the last (steeply downhill) hole. If anyone finds a pink Soft Electron Envy with no ink past the hole #9 basket, it is probably mine.

Other Thoughts:

I had a ton of fun playing here on a dry, sunny day. In rainy conditions I don't know whether sliding down steep hills would be quite as enjoyable. But this course is definitely worth a spin if you are in Juneau and enjoy short, tight wooded holes with lots of elevation.

If you are here on a cruise, you have a couple of options. The city bus drops you off within easy walking distance from the course, or you can use your preferred ride share app.
