Easy access and parking. Heavily used by new players trying out the sport. Largely shaded. Low risk of losing a disc. Enough trees to keep it interesting for intermediate players, particularly the unofficial back 9.

Only 9 holes are official and have concrete tee pads. Other park users can occasionally wander through the course so be aware when throwing.

Walkway over to hole #2 has washed out but is scheduled to be replaced in 2022. Signature hole is the pin placement on hole 4.

Decently open area, good length holes, only 1 muddy spot, no major traps to lose discs in.

Holes are very close together and if you aren't paying attention you'll definitely throw from one tee to the wrong hole if you're anything like my wife and I. And if other players are one hole ahead they will be playing almost directly into you.

Note: This was a last moment decision to play on my way home from another course and I was short on time. I'll take pictures on my next visit when the foliage returns in about 3 months.

Pros:
-The course is next door to the Virginia Zoo, the first hole shares a fence with the monkey cage. While playing, you can hear Calls of the Wild. Found it humorous while walking the fairways.
-Good signage with par, distance, map, and next tee arrow.
-Easy navigation. You can see all baskets from the 2nd tee.
-Very scenic course. Several oak trees with large canopy that dominates the course. Its not a canopy course, but has a strong influence off of the tee box for holes 1 and 4. All baskets are protected by oaks, except 1. Their are also a few cherry blossom trees along a few fairways.
-All holes have their own unique look with the oak trees. No two holes alike. A very memorable course.

-The natural tees are already rutted down. After a recent rain they were muddy and slick, very difficult to get traction for a drive. The number 7 tee is on a down slope where rain water collects when it rains. There was standing water on the tee. Went off the tee box for my drive, as with a few other tee boxes. Likely not to dry out until late spring or early summer.
-When it rains, there will be standing water in some sections of the course.
-Playground area is close to the course, likely to be some interference when the warmer weather returns and other park users start returning.
-No bathrooms. Not a great place to use a tree. Under the canopy of oaks, you can see all the way across the park including the playground and the windows of zoo offices, traffic driving into the park. People may not like someone using a tree, especially with children around.

I had a lot of fun zipping around the Oak trees. I played Indiantown a few weeks ago, a canopy course, and now Lafayette a partial canopy course. These type of courses are beginning to grow on me, there just flat out fun to play. Listening to the zoo sounds, add on the fun. When the course dries out, I'll visit at least once a month.

The muddy natural tees are a downer, and number 7 needs to be moved at least 25 feet forward right. It will decrease the distance, but will provide more protection to the basket from the oak tree that towers over it. Cant move the tee back, just deeper standing water.

Put in concrete tees and I would rate the course a 4.0, the layout is that strong and fun to me, and the natural tees bring the rating down. Its very difficult to attack the basket off of the tees, and I hit my share of trees. The short distances make it easy to recover. Its the fourth 9-holer I've played and by far has the best lay out of the 9-holer's.

In my opinion:
The Signature Hole is No. 1, Par 3, 240 ft. Straight in front of you just slightly right at about 100 feet is the trunk of an oak tree, full canopy. There is branch hanging all the way across the fairway no more than 9 feet above the ground. Cant bring it around to the right, theirs a parking lot there. To the left is a fence that is shared with a monkey habitat. Very scenic with bamboo, small trees, and tall grass lining the fairway and inside the cage. As I was walking down the fairway, I could see the tail of a monkey walking Parallel with me. So, your not going left. You must throw straight down the fairway under the branch, keeping it very low, may lose some distance. Need to keep the disc centered, theirs another large tree (not oak) protecting the right side of fairway as you fly pass the oak. Get pass that branch and the basket is left unprotected, the only open basket on the course. Very scenic hole.

Trouble Hole is No. 2, Par 3, 225 ft. Nothing bothersome off of the tee box, except the tee box is muddy. It's just getting to the basket that can provide trouble. The basket is in the middle of some large towering oaks with canopy. Just off of the green to the left is a pond. The tee is slightly angled towards the pond. Around and in the pond are small skinny trees, where an errant throw this time of the year, the disc can find its way to the pond. The water is murky, so I couldn't see how deep. So, theirs lost disc potential on this hole. When the foliage returns, that could help some disc drop straight down, avoiding hitting the pond. The best route to the basket is too aim low to your right between two of the oak trees, coming in right to left. But, if you run too fast past the basket or even if your short on distance on a bad angle, and you could find yourself in the pond. Thankfully, I hit one of the trees.
