Do not go alone

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 18, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

Location is easy to find... beyond that, this course did not have much to offer

Cons:

Poor or non-existent signage makes the course impossible to navigate even with a map. We struggled for 45 minutes and only made it through parts of the first 6 holes.

Do not attempt to throw this course without a local who is familiar with the course to act as a guide.

Other Thoughts:

The property is nice, but it is obvious that the site's other amenities (obstacle course, etc) hold a higher priority for resources/maintenance.

A nice facility, just not for disc golf.

…for Orienteering course baggers only… 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 5, 2021 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a fun, little, putt-putt course that plays through the wooded multi-use land behind and below the YMCA, perfectly scaled for beginners, kids, families, and couples. There are bright yellow baskets well within view of each of the tees. Six or so of the tees are either spotted by finding the white board temporary signage and rubber mat, which give you a good spot from which you can stand and deliver your putter ace run. I had fun with that aspect!

The variety is actually impressive for such a short course. The designers incorporated trees, obstacle course elements, and sometimes rocky elevations (on holes 5, 6, and 7) to shape shots in a variety of ways. Because the disc golf does ramble through an obvious obstacle course, and is so short, it might be interesting for a local to come out on a dry and clean day to see how fast you can shoot an 18 or better.

Cons:

Unless you come with someone who knows the course, you will likely have more of a challenge orienting to the map and finding your way around here than you will playing the disc golf course itself. The tricky thing for me was that once I spotted the first basket (at the east end of the soccer field, not the "SW corner" as listed in the course directions), the hunt was on! I needed to look at the map I'd printed, and drop back about the right distance to find the 18" round paver stone in the turf that begins the course. There was no sign today. After hole 1, I chose one several paths and hoped to find the mentioned red marker blocks to show me I was heading the right ways. Luckily I also knew the baskets were bright yellow. I usually spotted them first, and 'orienteered' from there. The course desperately needs more durable signage (all that were out there were faded blank or missing), and next tee guidance. The long, long walks from 1 to 2, and from 6 to 7 are capped off by a surprisingly hefty hike back to where you parked.

The single chain baskets just barely catch, and sound more like plastic than metal, but they work, for the most part. The first basket is a little higher quality than the rest, and they mow the grass in the first fairway only. From there on, you're in the rough. Speaking of which, do NOT take a cart. The obstacle course through which the course meanders includes at least a couple of climbing obstacles where you want to remain light.

Finally, though I enjoy a birdie bash or an ace race (and managed one on the shortest hole here...), all players with a rating above novice would be advised to consider this a par two course (for most purists, that's a con).

Other Thoughts:

Really, only locals and course baggers need apply. Folks who want all the variety and challenge of disc golf will want to go over to Wendell Moore.

Young man, there’s a place you can go 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 26, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Oldham YMCA design provides an excellent introduction to disc golf by offering a kid-friendly length combined with the appropriate amount of obstacles.

The rubber mats for teepads are a nice choice. While the mats aren't level on a couple holes, a long run-up won't be required.

The course offers a few typical disc golf features minus the distance. There's a narrow wooded hole, an uphill and downhill offering, and a creek that comes into play on a couple holes.

Hole #7 might be the best and prettiest hole with large rocks and a small creek on the left side of the fairway and several small trees closer to the basket that require some shot shaping.

I played the course in the early spring when it was in good condition, but I could see this course succumbing to tall grasses and extra growth during the summer.

This is a quick play that you can bag multiple times in an hour. The biggest time-consumers should be the walks - between Holes #1 and #2, and returning to the start after Hole #9.

Cons:

The course feels like mini golf. None of the holes exceed 150 feet, and two holes fall short of 100 feet. Grab a couple putters and leave your bulky bag in the car.

Navigation is a bit tough. The first hole is marked by a large stone in the ground. The walk between the first and second hole will take a few minutes. Follow the hand-painted red wooden markers in the ground along the path to the next hole.

A couple of the flimsy teepad signs are gone. The course flow might be intuitional, but a map will be useful.

The yellow, single-chain baskets are only a couple years old, but they're showing wear.

Due to a majority of the course being in a small valley near a creek, some spots will be susceptible to mud.

Other Thoughts:

This course is perfect for kids and novice disc golfers. For anyone with disc golf experience, their goal will likely be to record an ace or a nine-down round.

It's Fun To Play At The YMCA 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 9, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

Pulling into the YMCA drive to the right and down to the left as far as you can .Plenty of parking here . The course starts in the far left end . There is a Port O Let at the parking lot .
The Equipment - There are rubber mats for tee pads ( about 3 1/2' X 5' ) . This is unusual for a small new course and kind of a welcome mat for the community . Signage is lacking . There are some colors on trees , but don't pay much attention to them . There are also small wood markers to get you from hole 1 to 2 ( kind of cool . There are signs for most of the tee pads , but some are just a number penciled in on a plastic sheet, or a better sign which gives you the hole number distance and layout ( still plastic , but not uncommon for a new course ) . The baskets are yellow Lightning DBS single chains , but catch okay .
The Landscape - The course goes into the woods and stays there for your round . It follows part of an obstacle course . Most of the actual course stays pretty flat . There is a gully shot ( 5 ? ) and an up shot ( 4 ? ) but some of the elevation here is where you travel between holes . Some interesting basket placements . The holes are short , but they aren't right on top of one another .
The Highlights - This isn't a type of highlight course . at 1028' , this 9 hole course is so short that a whole family has a shot at their first ace or at least going under par .
Disc Risk - Almost impossible to lose a disc . The holes are very short , a little creek won't eat your discs and the course is clean .
Time - I was lost on some trails , but I could see finishing this course in about 20 minutes or less . You won't have a foursome out here .
This is a fantastic intro course . Also great for family fun . I met a family on the course just letting their 2 daughters ( too young for disc golf ) play on the trail and stick their feet in the creek . But mom and dad were asking questions about disc golf .
The course is still in its breaking in stages .Be patient . I am sure that the course will fix the rough edges in time . In the meantime , have fun with it and enjoy the walk .

Cons:

Navigation - The course needs an online map badly . After you finish a hole , there are times that you have choices of 3 different paths that you can take that may lead to the next hole . Next Tee signs on the trees would be great . Putting electrical tape on a bottom rung of the baskets would be good , too .
Safety - The course is pretty spread out . on one of the earlier holes , the tee pad is behind the previous hole's basket . Also , there are still some small stumps on some of the fairways .
Challenge - The longest hole is 149' . A putter and a hard plastic midrange is all you need . If you want to use a bunch of the discs in your bag , go to Wendell Moore , about 5 minutes away .
Keep in mind that it is a long walk into the woods where the course is , and a real long walk after hole 9 . You will be disoriented when you come out of the woods . The parking lot you see is the one on the far end of the Y . You have to walk the length of the grounds behind the Y and the baseball fields , maybe 300 meters from basket to car .

Other Thoughts:

This is the perfect alternative to Wendell Moore Park , which will intimidate the newbie . I am sure that the YMCA built this course to add to its arsenal of many fun options of things to do here .
This is also smart of them to introduce the YMCA to the curious that might wander over from Disc Golf Review or word of mouth .
You can't put much variety on such short holes , but the holes are fun . The YMCA has the right idea . They just need players to break the course in a little . It is a long way from the YMCA to the course , so trash cans a likely to be nil . Please carry out what you carry in .
My Recommendation - The day camps at the YMCA are going to love this new activity . It's also so short , it makes for a perfect date course and for families that either belong to the Y or live close by that can enjoy a round after dinner or during the weekend . Someone in that family will pull out an ace and they can have bragging rights all winter . Absolutely perfect for Introducing the game and for newbies to get their first few rounds . . Locals might like to sneak in a round if the have a spare hour . This course is putting practice only for anyone that carries more than 6 discs with them . Travelers might like this a a leg stretcher , and Course Collectors can grab this one and Wendell Moore in less than 3 hours .
