Simple Spread of Baskets

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 24, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

A course consisting of little more than single-chain baskets in a flat park.

The course at Tocquerville is a minimalist track with quick play. Cutting down on costs and confusingness, the course is simply played in a basket-to-basket layout with no course map, tees, or signs. The baskets are reasonably sturdy for single-chains. Holes 1 and 9 even share a basket - budget course building at its finest!

Okay, cutting back on the sarcasm, the gameplay is definitely one of the pros. Holes utilize the few trees in the park to great effect, generating remarkably nuanced shots ranging from low ceilings to guardian bushes to rocky drop-offs and basic left or right shapes. Navigation is pretty easy despite the lack of signs. There are plenty of ace chances, but also longer holes to pull out a midrange or fairway driver. It's good par-3 variety on the shorter end, and for a course of this scope, it's really hard to complain about what they've fit in.

As you'll see below, there are some major issues that I've had to factor in to my rating, but on the whole I feel much more warmly about this course than almost any other I've played with this low of a rating.

Cons:

Lack of dedicated infrastructure is the main issue.

-Amenities: No tees. No signs. The baskets are single chain, which aren't very good catchers. The lack of tees requires you to throw from basket to basket or make up tees, neither of which are ideal.

-Overlap: A lot of holes play near other fairways and baskets. Additionally, if anyone besides disc golfers was using the park, there would be no way to safely play, as the course uses every bit of space in the park.

-Undergrowth: Other than the big grassy field, the shrubs aren't trimmed back, creating uncomfortable knee-high bushes throughout most of the course.

Other Thoughts:

By one perspective, Tocquerville is just cheap baskets spread throughout a field. By another perspective, it's a nice collection of short holes with decent variety of shaping. On the whole, I enjoyed it, but the lack of course equipment, plus the cramped conditions, really drag it down. Until it gets some improvements, I'd rate it Poor.
