A foggy round of frolf at SMCDPDGC 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 31, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

I'm not sure if I've played a course that takes up less space than Slater Hall. It's such a simple layout, yet it was quite fitting for this quaint, little place.
- The course basically covers an area of 4 acres (technically 3.83 according to Google), of which ¼ is taken up by the community center building and parking lot. So, 9 holes, which don't overlap, in 3 acres. Throw in a lack of many obstacles, and this really is quality when you factor all of that in.
- How small is this town? The Baptist and Methodist churches back up to each other. Don't worry. The Baptist parking lot is at least twice as big.
- This is a pitch and putt course. No hole is listed longer than 138 feet; however, despite what the sign says, #5 plays much closer to 200 feet than its listed 120 feet.
- How small is this space? The course essentially follows the less-than quarter mile path around the property. Every hole either plays across or parallel to the sidewalk. Add to that, you're not going to be able to throw 400 feet straight on this property unless you're throwing over the building.
- Your varied holes on this course essentially consist of the following: #6 plays around a tree to the basket (the only hole on the course you can't throw directly at the basket). #7 a slight downhill shot to the basket on the edge of a slope. Go long and you could be OB in the road pretty easily. And #1, a straight shot to a low-ceilinged basket under a tree. Oh yeah, there's also a bench and book kiosk within steps of the basket.
- The community center is a great looking vintage building. The definite highlight of the course. It also originally opened in 1934, according to Google.
- Outstanding course for kids and beginners. It reaches its intended target audience.
- Great for ace runs and quick rounds. It was still dark and overcast when I started. Thanks to plenty of lights, it was easy to play. I finished my round in less than 15 minutes, just 1 minute after sunrise.

Cons:

#1 is a safety risk. The bench, book kiosk, and basket are way too close. You don't want a newbie, or any clueless player, throwing, and either hitting someone or breaking the glass on the kiosk.
- Get the length fixed on the tee sign for #5.
- With houses across the street, and this being a narrow road, it really feels like you're throwing into people's front yards.
- If you come from the west, it's only 3 minutes off the 4-lane highway, US-276. Coming from the east (US-25), it's a drive down two-lane country roads for some time. It felt like I was leaving the general metro Greenville area.
- I forgot to take a picture of the second hole. That's why there are only eight photos listed for this course. I guess you'll just have to use your imagination for an wide open, 69-foot hole. Nice!
- It's really hard to find anything inherently wrong with this course. You know it's a pitch-n-putt course. If you're expecting a masterpiece for a 957-foot, 9-hole course, that's 100% your fault.

Other Thoughts:

Slater Hall is as basic as it comes. At least this course is close to its pinnacle. Not sure what one could realistically do to dramatically improve this layout without creating a bunch of overlapping layouts.
- Slater isn't technically a town. My wiki search indicates it's technically Slater-Marietta, and it's a census designated place, or a CDP. So, this course could have been named the SMCDPDGC?
- What is your favorite straight ahead, simple hole: #2, 3, 4, 7, 8, or 9? I'm excluding #1 (low ceiling), #5 (long enough that you can hyzer a shot, and #6 (tree) from this one.
- Playing on a foggy, overcast morning added to a bit of the small town charm. One person passed me on the sidewalk and seemed completely confused as to what I was doing at 7:30 in the morning outside the community center.
- Baskets are in good condition. Tee signs are easy to locate. Tee areas are marked.
- You know who is playing this course. It's not your average player. It's either the local, live across the street player or the addict. Your average player isn't stopping by here.
