Pros:

Leland DGC is a 9 hole course that plays in a mostly counterclockwise manner around the back side of the school property. The baseball field comes into play on hole 3. There's a couple other random things in play in a few places, otherwise completely flat and open.

The baskets are homemade single chain deals. They're single chained but catch surprisingly well actually. Probably helps that they have a slightly larger than normal tray which helps scoop putts in. One basket and pin position per hole. The baskets are numbered which is helpful since there's no tee signs.

With the lack of obstacles out here wind is going to be your main challenge. There's a farm field to the north of the course and if the wind is coming from that direction it can pose a bit of a challenge. It was coming from that direction today and it was quite the adventure.

The course plays basket to basket so the course is pretty easy to follow for the most part. I'd still advise using a map to avoid any confusion, but very doable without one too.

Cons:

The obvious con is the lack of tee signs and pads. Tee pads aren't that big of a deal since the grass is mowed nicely and the course is flat as can be. Having some tee signs would be nice though.

Holes 4 and 5 play very close to some yards bordering the back side of the property. They're not fenced in or anything, but I can see shots landing in someone's backyard very easily.

Since it's on school grounds it's only available when school is not in session.

Other Thoughts:

This is a typical school course. Just with lesser equipment than most other courses like this. If it had tees and/or signs I'd bump it up to a 1.5.

The course works for it's intended purpose, there's just not too much for replay value. If you're near here, by all means give it a spin. Not worth any type of detour to play this one though, unless you have to play them all.

Leland High School

Reviewed: Played on:Nov 20, 2022 Played the course:once

Pros:

- 9 cool locally made baskets that catch decently for being single chainers.

- Good place for the locals and school kids to practice their form or test out new discs.

- Quick one for baggers or players on their way out west to Iowa or coming back east into the Chicagoland area.

Cons:

- School course so cannot play during school hours or when there's outdoor school activities going on.

- No teepads, no signs. Just throwing from basket to basket in pretty much constant windy conditions. Layout wasn't always super obvious as to which basket was the next one to throw but I managed to figure it out just fine.

- Baskets are cool but harder thrown putts have a potential to chain out due to only being single chained baskets.

- Not much of a challenge due to it being mostly open holes with very minimal obstacles. Exception being hole 3 where you have to thrown either over or around a baseball field with a cornfield on your right side. Very high chance of losing a disc during the summer part of the year.

Other Thoughts:

Leland High School is another typical flat, boring 9er with not much really going for it. I know, shocking for a high school course right? But I think the Eagle Scouts did their best and I thought the locally designed baskets were kinda cool. Definitely nothing to drive out of your way for but if you happen to be in the area and you're looking to get another notch in your belt, this ones a quick play.

New School Course. drive by

Pros:

New course built as an Eagle Scout project by a student from Leland High School. Uses the available land the school has and turns it into a course. Start theough the tunnel of pine trees bear the bus barn. Sweet tunnel shot. It uses all of the baseball fields, buildings, and trees as objects. Hole 3 is awesome. You have to throw around or over the baseball field. Fence and foul poles makes really interesting hazards/objects. Easy access and parking spots.Update 2023*I am the PE teacher here at Leland. We adding this year the element of playing the course backwards for an additional 9. We just call in the Leland Backwards 9. We used it this way in our yearly school wide tournament and I felt it was successful.Start of hole 10 would be the blacktop entrance to the school. Makes for about a 80' foot throw. It's our CTP hole. Then play everything the same way as before. The teepad is anywhere within 10 feet of the previously played basket.

Cons:

Pars are not visibly listed. Most are par 3s. Baseball field is played as a par 4. No tee pads. You throw from basket to next basket. You stand 10 feet to the side for the tee. Its not bad this way. Course rules.

Other Thoughts:

I play this course weekly and really enjoy it. Watch out for the farm field. Otherwise it's a great course to play. Play the full 18 by turning around and playing it backwards. Great course to let it rip!
