The Very Good is Better than the Somewhat Bad 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 23, 2021 Played the course:once

Other Thoughts:

Just about everything you need to know about this course is in Rudy's detailed review below, and while it's all true, I came away with a somewhat more positive experience when I played in late October of 2021. (Note: some of the brush may have been cleared from some wooded holes in the year between our reviews).

On the negative side, the first third of the course plays through the lowest areas of the park, and it's probably muddy and swampy 300+ days of the year. The holes themselves aren't bad, but the footing can be miserable. And the long trek from #3 to #4 on a muddy little trail will make you wonder why you're here.

But after reaching higher ground the wooded holes are pretty good (with only a few exceptions like #7: a short, extreme uphill that feels stuck in). Then the course finishes strong, saving the very best holes for the last third. Elevation, water, vistas: the tight wooded gap after clearing the water on #15, throwing across an endless valley with danger all along the left and right on #16, the risk/reward over water on #17, and the sidehill on #18 all make for memorable disc golf.

The difference between a 3.0 and a 3.5 rating isn't much, but I came away feeling like a handful of holes touched 4.0. One tip: don't make the mistake I did by parking in the lot by the 14th tee and playing from there. I experienced the very best of the course first, and then I went down into the mud. While there are some good holes left to play, the course never really rises to the expectations it set up in my mind by playing "the last part first."

Extremely Scenic 12-holer, Frustrating 18-holer 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Sep 1, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

There is a lot to like and dislike on this course which makes it difficult to rate. It's definitely not "typical" in any sense but there are too many flaws that need not be to rate it beyond "Good". Some of these flaws (like navigation) are just first-timer complaints, others like dense brush, #9, or the dirt "stairway" after #14 won't get better with repeat visits as long as they linger unchanged.

Sweet Arrow Park truly had some beautiful views, like the Waterfall crossing to #8, teeing off from #8 over the stream below and the steep embankment of rocks --probably not high risk but definitely creates the sensation that it is-- the return stream shot on #15, or the lake on #16. They were all scenic taken in singularly and made the trip worthwhile, an unexpected highlight in central PA.

It also has a lot of replay value, there is ample variety and elevation here, it should be at least 4 stars if they ever erase the issues. Signature holes would include #6, #8, #15, and #16.

The park amenities by #13/14 (another parking lot) were absolutely top notch. It gave me a much needed a break from a day of playing multiple rounds on multiple courses.

The boardwalk by the waterfall and coming back from #14 is also great and adds to the experience as did the benches on the course have a fairly unique and minimalist construction and it fits in with everything else here. Kudos.

Cons:

The big letdown is that it sometimes feels like several sets of disparate holes married into one frankencourse. Ordinarily, I would just call it variety, but the apparent neglect and the way the holes simply don't flow from one to the other makes it a disjointed mish mash instead.

Bring bright discs you don't mind losing. Much of #1-5 are very typical forest fare but have tight, not quite narrow, fairways, unsuitable for beginners. The edges consist entirely of dense brush and need a severe cleaning. The front half of #3 is marsh and basically a large water hazard. #9 is similarly brush-heavy. There are also about five water hazards (#6, 8, 15, 16, 17), three of them avoidable with layups for newcomers. These are all disc loss spots.

It needs more directional signs along the way. Navigation is a PITA and unintuitive at times, especially without UDISC. My phone saw more use than my discs. Right off the bat I had problems locating #1, there is no signs anywhere pointing "This way!" Instead of a map upfront, it only lists sponsors on the bulletin board. Tee #7 was quite obscure, as were tees #11, #13 and 15. #14 was just too distant to be found stumbled upon from the last tee. On a previous course that day -- also forested and far longer -- I never once had to pull out my phone to find where to go next. The baskets guided me to the next tee, without fail, and signs along the way if more direction was needed.

Teepost signs, sometimes missing, often felt just wrong, like they were accurate long ago but too many tweaks had taken place since then. The distances often didn't seem correct and the way basket are labeled with the dashed line, made them seem they were way further on the one side or another than reality. #6 needs a better sign, I threw to the wrong basket (#15) up on the hill. #14's sign makes the basket appear way closer to the forest entrance than it is.

On #3 and #9, you have to backtrack along the entire length of the holes.

#9. It's a fairly typical forest hyzer, overgrown as well, but its fairway is also a main walking trail and you're throwing around a blind curve. I was only 30 seconds early from hitting a couple walking their dog. They passed me on my way to the basket. #9 & #10 tee off in the same basic spot, they really should make a hole between existing #10 and the long walk to #11 instead. It's off the beaten path for park patrons, unlike the current #9.

#12-13 desperately need a clearout of dead wood and some next basket signs.

Tee#15 was fairly difficult to find. First, the dirt walk down from #14 wasn't marked clearly and took some locating, but it also needs a proper handrail on the decline and/or better step-shaping, far too rocky and rundown. For a while, I thought the #15's tee-off point might be one of the lookout points on the boardwalk but no.

After 117 holes of DG that day, my ankles absolutely hated walking sidewise along the steep incline for the entire length of #18. #16 and parts of #17 have this problem too, with bad throws. Those abused body parts have filed for divorce and I miss them.

On return trips, I'll going to play this course as a 12-holer, #6-7-8 & #10 thru 18 (skipping 1-5, 9) to get the best of the experience and avoid 90% of the hassle. I can get my flatground forest fix elsewhere, hold the rough.

Other Thoughts:

Terrain Potential: XXXXx - Phenomenal. Waterfalls, water, hills, forest, swamp, and the kitchen sink.
Actual Execution: XXx - Decent. Layout needs work and other major issues.
Upkeep: Xx - Passable. Too many problem areas and issues linger on.
Difficulty: XXXx - Firmly in intermediate territory.
Fun Factor: XXx - Decent. Lots of fun followed by unneeded aggravation.
Overall: XXX - Good but course could easily be 4 star with fixes.

Starting Point: Tee 1 is at 40.568350, -76.367326 (on google maps). Park near the newly built pavilion and walk behind it down the hill into the break in the forest, tee will be on left.

Amenities: Not much but a portapotty in the DG parking lot. In the other parking lot at #13/14 are proper facilities if you go down all the steps.

Layout: #1-5 basically loop. You need to backtrack on #3 the entire length of the hole. #6 is uphill at end of the parking lot with a shot over the reservoir drainage, the basket by the wooden fence along the path. #7 is right of the asphalt path shooting a short but steep uphill over the path. #8 takes the metal bridge over and then makes a right. 8-11 loop. Take the trail to #9/10 which tee off in the same spot. After #10, you can take the forest path or backtrack to #8. Tee #11 is just uphill of Tee#8. #11 is an uphill. #12-14 loop. #12 is another uphill into the forest. Tee #13 is downhill left of basket, continues in the same direction but downhill. Cross the entire parking lot to the utility shed. #14 is an uphill back into the same forest. Make it to the boardwalk towards river and go back to bridge. The dirt trail at end of bridge, opposite direction of #8, goes to tee #15. Throw over river and cross bridge. #16 - 17 are along the lake. #18's basket is near beginning of parking lot.

Awesome Scenic Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 15, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

Sweet Arrow Lake is a really, really cool course with scenic shots and a great view of the lake. They have about 3 "epic" shots that are some of my favorites: 7, 8, and 15 (8 and 15 you shoot across the creek and have views of the waterfall). You have about 2 holes where you can really rip it for a bomb shot.

Cons:

A lot of the holes have around the same length, so you don't get much variety in distance.
Hole 1 was absolutely swamped and unmaintained.
The fairways are really tight on some holes and the rough is very rough.
Lacked benches.

Other Thoughts:

This park is really nice and peaceful, so definitely carve out enough to to chill and enjoy the park!

Scenic tour through mostly woods with some tight fairways but overall hole length is shorter than most other comparable venues

Cons:

Can be muddy in 3 or 4 holes most of the year but not a swamp. Little difficult to follow so get a map on the sign by the entering park driveway

Fun way to celebrate first day of summer 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 20, 2016 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Temp 83-88 and sunny
-nice use of elevation changes
-baskets all in good shape
-two holes the 8th and the 15th are some of the funnest holes I have played. The 8th is the waterfall hole, got out a disc that I was willing to lose shot a hyzer and made the fairway; 15th hole you shoot across the stream, got out same disc from before and ...what do you know made it with 15 feet to spare.

16th hole only one where you can really rip it...nice view of lake

Cons:

-you definitely need to print out the map and score sheet to take with you as finding the next tee position can be difficult.

first five holes are in wetlands, very tight, almost lost a disc on 3.

15th tee off position needs to be better marked, you have to go to the bridge and cut to the right just before crossing...but as I said in the pros this hole is a blast.

16th; had to move around sunbathers so as not to chance hitting them....but its their park too so did not mind, and their dog was friendly.

dont use the porta potty in the parking lot....pee-U! and no toilet paper.

Other Thoughts:

Some of the tee boxes were pretty rough. The grounds were well kept, recently mowed. You could tell they had recently done some work clearing out the brush on some of the holes. Poison Ivy is in abundance in some of the areas off the fairways (buts its a park so is to be expected) . All in all a nice day out.

Great scenery, elevation change and challenging holes. Awesome waterfall with holes that use the water to make it a 'Hero or Zero' situation.

Cons:

Slightly overgrown fairways, Holes 4 and 5 are tough to navigate. Lots of chances to lose discs

Other Thoughts:

Really nice course, it sometimes does propose a hazard to others so really watch out! Great little stop not far off 81 for a much needed leg stretching. Will stop back by on my next trip!

Home Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 23, 2015 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a course with very scenic views and lots of different terrain. For example on hole 1 you tee off in the open, enter an opening in the woods through a gap in the trees, over a small stream. On hole 2 you start in the opening again and play into the woods. hole 3 is entirely in the woods. Hole 4 is in another clearing in the trees. Hole 5 is entirely wooded. Hole 6 is in a clearing in the woods, out a small gap in the trees, back out into the opening. Hole 7 is in the open with a water hazard in the middle and to the right. Hole 8 is in the trees, through an opening, up a hill, back into the trees. Hole 9 (over the water fall) is in the trees into an opening with water to your right. 10 and 11 are both in the woods. Hole 12 is up a hill slightly wooded. 13 is very thick with trees. Hole 14 is also thick at the tee pad but opens up completely at the basket. 15 is over the water falls on the other side this time, through an opening in the trees, out into the open. 16 is a bomb of a throw, in the open, slightly down hill with water to your left and right. 17 is open with water to your right and OB long with a road. And finally 18 is open with a few pine trees to mess with your putts and a tight landing area. Left is OB with a parking lot right is also OB with a road. All holes are par 3's and there are several ace run holes, but don't be fooled, this course is not easy for veterans, but is fun for beginners (Ive been both) You get a little bit of everything with this course and don't forget to enjoy the view.

Cons:

In the summer this course can be very difficult for anyone. With several holes cut right out of thick brush, one bad throw or kick off of a tree could result into you throwing out of some thick brush. Also bring a disc grabber or retriever for the water holes, but hey, whats a course without some hazards. Also on several holes (mostly 1-6) have slightly over lapping fairways and a few holes you have to walk back the fairway to get to the next hole. There are several picnic areas, walk ways, and benches you play near but just be smart and don't throw, give them a second to pass the area you are throwing or polity ask them to move for 1 min, again, this is a public park. But i think they did the best they could with the area they had to use.

Other Thoughts:

The course is currently going through a slight redesign to make for a new pavilion. The designer of the course has been picking my brain and i chimed in a few idea. The course by 2016 should be more "tourney friendly'. By that i mean large amounts of people can play at one time which having to worry about hitting people or being help up to walk back through a fairway. Also yes between some holes (such as 11 to 12) there is a slight walk you have to take but hey, you decided to go disc golfing, its a sport that requires exercise threw walking, if you are complaining, you probably need it. Also for those who want to complain the grass needs to be cut or bushes need to be trimmed. Stop and take a look around at the size of the park. 2 park managers do all the work but they do accept volunteer work at any time *cough cough*. Be neat, clean up after yourself, and enjoy your round. If anyone needs a course guide, message me.

Bagged Another in Pine Grove 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 28, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Had more than a few picturesque holes that took advantage of the elevation changes and adjacent water bodies (2 holes on the front 9 and all holes on the back 9). Baskets and signs were in great shape. The course was challenging; had to use multiple technical shots. Got to bag another course while in Pine Grove.

Cons:

I'll try not to be harsh, but safety is a big priority of mine (I would rather not be struck with a disc while playing)...Dangerous course design for multiple holes. Examples: Hole 1 you throw over Hole 2's fairway (and vice versa), and there is a picnic table area on Hole 1's green. Hole 3's tee pad is in immediate vicinity of Hole 5's basket, so an errant shot would certainly cause some problems for anyone putting out. After finishing Hole 4, you have to walk back down the fairway, and then back through Hole 3's green (same problem as above). Hole 5's fairway is on the same line as Hole 2's fairway, so errant shots would cause yet another problem. To get to Hole 6, you have cross over Hole 2's fairway. Hole 6 you throw over Hole 1's fairway, and the basket is it immediate vicinity of another picnic area. Hole 8 you throw over a large walking path, etc... Basically, out of the first 9 holes, 7 of them have big safety concerns. Tee pads were in pretty rough shape, but manageable. Fairways were overgrown.

Other Thoughts:

Despite the major safety issues with the front 9's layout, this was a decent course. As stated before, the use of the elevation and the waterways/dam was awesome. A few "empty your bag" holes were really fun. If the front 9 layout had a safer and better flow, this course would be solid.

Beautiful scenery, decent course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 6, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

I'm giving this course a higher rating than I would otherwise mostly because it is in an absolutely beautiful setting! Several holes play over/around a stunning waterfall and the views to the lake are fantastic. The old growth forest portion is also very nice. A similar course in a blah location would probably be around 2.5 stars. That said there are some nice holes here. Lots of up and down holes with some challenge though many are of the pitch and putt variety, there are a few hair-raising holes that play over the stream/waterfall and next to the lake. In particular, hole 9 and 15 were a lot of fun due to the perceived risk of losing a disc down the ravine (clearing the ravine isn't too difficult on any of these). The course makes good use of elevation making some of the shorter holes play a little longer. In general, the holes that play through the woods/over the stream were a lot of fun. On the whole I'd almost say it's a destination course just based on the scenery. Certainly not your every day run-of-the mill course

Cons:

On the downside this course does have some issues. Chief among these is circulation. Several holes 1, and 6 play directly over picnic areas/picnic tables. There were people sitting and eating not 20' from hole six when I played - I decided to skip it rather than risk beaning some kids. A few holes are also directly adjacent to the parking lot where an errant shot can easily bean a parked SUV for instance (with a dx teebird from the top of 18....). Navigating the course is also a little loopy. Several holes double back on themselves and a few tees are a little hard to find. It doesn't have a great flow to it. As teepads go, I didn't have an issue with the crushed gravel material however they are pretty short. You're not going to get any kind of run up - basically stand and deliver (which is Ok for the length of most of these).

The first few holes are an absolute jungle! Very thick undergrowth - be prepared to lose some plastic if your placement isn't awesome. There's also a good bit of potential to lose some plastic in the lake or stream that plays throughout. I'd recommend bringing a few sacrificial dx discs just in case. A good bit of the course was pretty marshy when I played - a change of socks is not a bad idea to bring along

Other Thoughts:

On the whole this course is not your typical community park course - it's quite stunning and worth the drive. Leave the drivers at home, bring some fairways, a couple rocs (or buzzzes if that's your thing) and have a blast! I also highly recommend launching a sacrificial dx disc into the lake off the top of 16 - very satisfying!

Desperado 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 14, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

Challenging holes

Cons:

Challenging flow

Other Thoughts:

Didn't read the reviews ahead of time - simply printed the map, saw the holes seemed to avoid the largest bodies of water, and with an average distance of 260', expected to find a simple little recreation course. When pulling into the parking lot, saw a few baskets in the wide open, and a family hanging about one, seeming to confirm my assumptions.

I then spent the next 1.5 hours thinking "Hmm, that's a more difficult shot than I'd expect, based upon the map/distances", A perfect example of this was 135' #8 - an ace run if I ever expected one. However, find the tee down and to the right, and the basket straight up a steep hill to the left, with large hardwoods on either side of the main window just prior to the basket, and I earned a four, as both my drive and (first) approach hit wood, got on their edge, and rolled back down the hill.

There are challenges here - uphill shots, water-carrys (more than the map indicates), runaway greens, touch shots, and turns, with the lefts outnumbering the rights by a fair amount. Most fairways are a window or a tunnel, requiring line-holding vice tree-avoidance.

One the negative side, studying the map will give you an idea of the flow issues - fairway-1 crossing both fairways-2&6, cul-de-sacs formed by 3-4-5 and 9-10-11. Thick undergrowth on about half the holes could result in (futile) searches, While the tee signs are sufficient, the 3'x6' wood-framed/gravel (partially) filled tees can be an issue. Two parking lots and pedestrian-filled walking paths add to the complications.

Somebody(ies) went to a lot of effort to create this course, creating some paths to avoid completely returning down the fairways on the cul-de-sac groupings, strategically placing orange arrows/info to assist with the more-awkward transitions, and even some orange spray-painting of trees to aid with navigation. (Note, tee-15 is beneath the boardwalk - walk to bottom, then hard right to access it, then throw over stream).

There's a lot to like (challenges) about this course. There's a lot to dislike about this course (flow). I can imagine a wide variety of reactions (ratings) for this course. I'll simply rate this course as "average", although it is anything but "typical" - it is more a case of balancing extremes!

rec course fun to play. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 30, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

The scenery on the last 2/3 of the course was refreshing. A 10foot waterfall, lake, and creek all come into play.
Nice use of the area given the limited space.
Over all the course was fun to play.
Nice recreational course that demands accuracy, or you can shoot a high number.
A Lot of fun shots to throw.

Cons:

Holes 1-6 didn't seem to flow cohesively. Re-routing those holes might correct this.
A little congested, example would be hole 6 tee is in the fairway of the first hole.
The opportunity to throw a bad shot and lose your disc is very high for new players on the first 6 holes.
Spotters will be helpful when the vegetation is ripe.

Other Thoughts:

Play 6-18 first, then walk across parking lot to the play hole 1-5 after the 18th.

Use the park all the time, first time playing DG here. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 16, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course seemed varied and had an interesting path through property. The course took advantage of well maintained trails through the property. A decent mix of difficulty and risk taking. A nice walk through the park taking you past a few features and near the boardwalk trail as well.

Cons:

I thought the hole near the bottom parking lot (I believe it was 5, 6) curved left towards my own car, and the 14th hole(previously pointed out) up top that kind of cuts off the corner of the parking lot seemed like chance for impact. This place isn't full very much but I could see these two being interesting sometimes.

Everything had the same par, and I'm no expert but it just didn't feel right comparing the difficulty of various holes.

Lots of brush if you end up off the trail, but I don't know much can be expected differently for a course going through the woods/brush. I played my first game here and didn't end up in any bad situations though.

Other Thoughts:

To some of the other commentary: the course was added to existing trail system, the system was not generated just for this course if that explains some of the path choices.

Nice facilities at main building area (you pass by a little over halfway through course) and portable facilities at waterfall parking lot.

Lots of close by activities, park trails, waterfall, fishing, play ground, and geocaching to name some.

Beautiful little park. Waterfalls, lake, great views. Some very interesting holes. Well marked. Very entertaining course but not for the beginner.

Cons:

This is not a course for everybody. Lots of blood letting when retrieving the disc from the many dense brush (major sticker bushes). Water comes into play on many holes. The gravel (more like large rocks) tees are no fun. Found myself on my a** a few time on the run ups. On hole 17, they have a park bench right in front of it. Had to move off the tee so we wouldn't hit the people sitting there.

Pros:

Some interesting tee shots across the dam (2 holes) and some fun ace runs. Could be really interesting course over time if rough is cut out

Cons:

Hole 14 over parking lot is a dangerous tee shot. its a small gap to hit and has the potential to wang someone in parking lot on errant tee shot. Holes 2-6 would be head-hunting territory if there was anyone else playing as you must walk back through previous fairways and backtrack...a major design flaw. A lot of the holes are lined with extremely dense trees that would frustrate a small animal to navigate them never mind a human being - I kept thinking that I hope I don't throw a disc in and be able to see it but not get to it (which could happen on a LOT of the holes) as many fairways had too many trees considering the rough is THAT thick. Holes were short with some unnavigable pitfalls for an amateur...like throwing across a parking lot (?!) through a narrow tree gap, dense trees on the side of dense tight fairways

Other Thoughts:

It seems like there is a lot of land around some of the front nine holes, and I wonder if some of this land could have been utilized for the course so that you did not have to walk back through fairways. It seems like this course was put up in a hurry without a lot of thought given to course design...I would not recommend this course to someone interested in giving the sport of disc golf a try. It is definitely not an amateur course (for the reasons I listed above) and it is pretty frustrating in its current condition.
