Pros:

- Pro shop with knowledgable, friendly pros.

- Very well maintained (nice tee boxes and baskets, grass in great shape, clear signage telling you which pin was in play, protection for the tee box in the firing line).

- Lots of good variety of curves and shaped shots needed. Plenty of opportunities to get creative with your shot selection. Lots of blind, technical drives. Despite the lack of distance there was plenty of challenge.

Cons:

- Really crowded. My group was pretty slow (several beginners) and we were still waiting a few minutes for each hole until at least halfway through the course.

- Not a ton of distance. Much more of a control shot course with less of a premium on distance. There were a few long pin positions listed but none in play the day I played.

- Lots of potential to get a disc thrown at you. There are plenty of crossed/adjacent fairways. Moreover, with so many blind tee shots on a crowded course, it's easy to hit into someone without realizing it. Lots of people shouting "fore" from all directions.

- Pay course. I don't mind too much, and given how crowded it is there's obviously enough demand to justify it. But it's a mark against it.

Other Thoughts:

Honestly, I think this course gets a bit of a pass on some of its weaker features because it's such an institution. I had heard about it long before I played it. I don't regret paying and playing it at all - it was a fun round! - but it doesn't really deserve the hype, IMO.

Pros:

-Morley Field is a popular, well-loved course just a short drive from downtown San Diego. It is the perfect terrain for a disc golf course. Parts of the course have a green-grass park feel, while other parts are hillier and more rugged. All sizes and shapes of trees create a wonderful mix of holes.

-To have a pro shop is great, but to have a pro shop this well-stocked is amazing. Food and a great selection of discs are available, including rentals. Bathrooms are present as well.

-Each hole has 3-10 pin locations, more than enough to completely change each hole from one week to the next. I say more than enough because some of the locations are borderline silly and don't add value to the course.

-The two signature holes at Morley have to be #5 and #11. Hole 5 plays from an elevated tee, gently downhill, and can be stretched to 425 feet. However, the longest position is a potential safety issue as good shots often travel over the obscured #6 tee. Hole #11 also plays from an elevated tee, around two large palm trees, and to a basket tucked in a small valley.

-Each hole has a large concrete tee pad, a large bench and a trash can, as well as brand-new Innova Discatcher baskets. The two practice baskets are original Mach 3s.

-The course has recently received some new, full-color tee signs that make it much easier to locate the basket for first-time players. An orange sticker marks the current basket placement. Most holes here have at least one or two blind basket positions, so this is a great improvement to the course.

Cons:

-Morley Field is a very popular and crowded course, even on weekdays, as there aren't an ample amount of disc golf courses in San Diego, and this is the city's best. Large groups of novice players are common and will make for a slow round. This is the only course I have ever witnessed a four group backup on a tee box.

-Holes are very close together and in many instances, cross over one another. FORE is a most popular remark. One suggestion to alleviate a bit of the congestion would be to simply remove hole #19, as it crosses the fairways of holes #16 and #18.

-The parking lot capacity is only approximately 25 cars. I believe people park on the back side of the course, near hole 15, when it fills up.

Other Thoughts:

-Much care must be taken to route the course every week to make sure adjacent holes do not have baskets in very close proximity and to limit congestion points.

-The fee is $4 for week-days and $5 for weekends, with monthly passes available. It may not be popular to say so, but I believe the price could be doubled and the course would still attract large crowds.

-The course definitely has the old-style California feel. Many holes have fun, unique lines that force creative shot making. Thumbers, rollers, and vertical spike shots are all stroke savers here. The course was definitely designed in the era of mid-ranges and putters and being able to take short-cut lines with drivers is a guilty pleasure.

A tad over rated 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 3, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Busy with new players. Like seeing new players playing!

Cons:

Pay to play at a completely average course! Over crowded! Parking is horrible! Understand. It's a small piece of land but too many crossing tees. Heard "FOUR" way too much! Esp around holes 14,15,16,17,18 and 19....shared fairways and nets on teepads to protect.

Other Thoughts:

I have heard that Morley is a bucket list course...the hype was too great! Playing other CA courses and being from the KC area, this course is way to small, took the driver out once. Had to wait around 5 mins per hole. Took around 3 hours to play! We played around 4p on a Monday...may have been a better impression during a non busy time.

Great course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 20, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great course layout. Easy to find tees and baskets. Tees are very good. Good distance. Alternate baskets. Some par 4's. Nicely wooded. Elevation changes. Grass is well kept. Pro shop. Seating on every hole. Variety of holes. Hole signs are easy to follow.

Cons:

Tons of people with a ten minute wait time at the first tee. Pay to play. A couple holes get close to the road.

Other Thoughts:

Great course. Fun yet challenging. Any level player can enjoy it. If you are in San Diego it is a must play. The quality of course makes up for the $3. Make sure you start early enough to finish before dusk.

Busy, but a must play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 26, 2014 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Seating on every single tee pad.
- I used every type of shot i had. BH, FH, OH, everything.
- Friendly Locals who let me join their 3some as i was a single and didnt know the layout of the course.
- PERFECTLY manicured fairways and greens. This course is is top shape.
- Well stocked pro shop.
- Bathrooms right next to the practice area and tee 1.
- Huge practice area with 3 basket to putt on.
- Well utilized piece of land for what they were dealt.

Cons:

- LOTS of people and crowds.
- Small piece of land, although the course was very very well oriented to utilize all the land.
- Pro shop is not visible from the parking lot and can be confusing where to go to pay for first timers if they dont ask the locals around the practice basket.

Other Thoughts:

All i can say about morley is wow. For the good and for the bad. As soon as i pulled into the morley parking lot it was a rat race to find a park. Very Very crowded course. They claim its the busiest course in the world, and it very well may be. The pro shop is not visible form the parking lot making it a bit difficult for non locals to find where to pay. Luckly the locals around the practice area were nice to point out where the pro shop is. The course was beautiful. Wonderfully manicured. Everything from long left turning hyzers, to thumbers up a hill through a gap. This course demands every type of shot! The only cons i can really say are that you are gonna be waiting on every teepad for the previous group to clear the green. Its a very busy course. Worth it? YES. The other con is that the piece of property they are situated on is fairly small, Although they utilize it to its fullest extent and really get the most out of the property, id like a few longer holes. Id highly recommend this course to out of towners looking to get in a round at a new course. Im very happy i played here and braved the crowds. I will definitely be playing morley again next time im in San Deigo.

Short with variety 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2014 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The location in Balboa Park can't be beat for urban outdoors. The holes are short, but well-placed obstacles make every hole challenging. Even after playing dozens of times, I find new ways to play holes. Especially since they move the baskets every week (at least).

Cons:

It is consistently crowded, but most groups will let fast players play through.

This Course Has Been Reviewed More Than Sea World! 2+ years

Pros:

Unfortunately, I was only in San Diego for a weekend meaning I would have to face the crowds at Morley. I arranged to meet a friend there at 06:45 on a Saturday. I was amazed to find about 20 cars already there and the place a beehive of activity with groups already playing, waiting at # 1, etc. I had shown up on the Saturday of the their monthly tournament.
We were able to get our round started before the tourney and didn't experience any slow downs until about hole # 16.

There is a $4 fee ($3 weekdays) for weekends. They give you a little bracelet to wear showing that you've paid, like a hospital bracelet. The course is very well maintained and baskets are changed weekly by the staff here. Some holes have as many as 7 different basket positions. Baskets, tee pads, signs, benches are all well done.
Great terrain for a course. Rolling hills, just enough trees, some underbrush, nice variety of holes. Very pretty course.
The weather in San Diego is perfect for disc golf!

Cons:

I hate to rate a course down because it's too popular but that's the story here. Taking 3 plus hours to play a round of disc golf is a major Con in my book.
I can't see better players being challenged here. I'm a terrible, old Rec player and I should have shot even (ended up at +1). I have no idea which placement the baskets were in on the day I played.

There is no water. No epic holes in my opinion. No awesome downhills.

Other Thoughts:

My playing partner wasn't happy with Snapper's recent attempts to add to the difficulty of some holes by adding/planting trees. Having never played here before, I have no opinion.

I've heard so much about Morley field for so many years. After finally getting to play it, I was somewhat surprised at it's lack of challenge. Luckily, I played early enough that I didn't have the experience of waiting at every hole. Being the only course in San Diego, IMO, It's a very crowded, enjoyable intermediate course in the city with the most perfect disc golf weather anywhere.

Pros:

The park itself is very pretty, well landscaped, and cared for. There are lots of different types of shots, and the course is pretty interesting, start to finish.

Cons:

Like everything else in California, it is incredibly crowded. You have to wait on almost every pad, and you are always worried about getting hit by a disc. The crowd ruined it for me.

Other Thoughts:

As a course that has been around a long time, it is fun to play if you are in the area. Try to avoid evenings and weekends cause it is just packed with people.

Best Course Design/Layout/Maintenance, but longest waits in SD 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 25, 2013 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Every hole has multiple positions, ranging from 3 to 7 basket positions rotated weekly.
-The course is very well maintained.
-Exceptional variety of holes with regard to drives required
-Tree density variation is exceptional
-Weekly doubles
-19 holes (weird but unique)

Cons:

-VERY LONG wait times unless you go before 8am
-Little terrain change (mostly grass, some dirt/wood chips)
-Parking can be difficult

Other Thoughts:

The course itself is a 5.0 without a doubt, but with rounds typically taking 3 to 3.5hrs for this pay-to-play course (although it's an all-day fee) and the difficulty in parking at times, unfortunately that makes the Morley Field experience somewhat less enjoyable.
Honestly have no problem with the pay-to-play aspect because it's well maintained. Really, it's the wait.

Technical - a wide variety of shots, elevations, woods, bombs. Good people in general and a well stocked pro shop! The stoners and drunks can be amusing as well.

Cons:

Crowds!! This place is POPULAR! Expect to do some waiting. The drunk stoners can be a pain in the butt. Parking can be an issue but if you don't mind a shirt walk in there us plenty nearby.

Other Thoughts:

This is my home course and I feel pretty darn lucky. This course will help you improve rapidly with a requirement of almost all the throws available, a great deal of control, and never a shortage of skilled players to jump in with and learn from or challenge your skills with. The crowd can be pretty intense but with a laid back attitude you can meet a great deal if interesting people and have a great time. It is a pay-to-play course but I feel it's a great value when you weigh the benefits and consider the staffs value. The pro-shop is well stocked, and the course is always full of smiling faces!

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 7, 2013 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Good park for all skill levels. The park is well maintained and has a great pro shop. It's impossible to beat the weather in San Diego, impossible. Multiple tee pads is a great option to keep things fresh.

Cons:

Every time I have been there it's been crowded. The parking lot is really small. The holes are for the most part short and the last few are complete blind shots. Those blind shots suck even more where the holes overlap. You never know if or when you'll get hit and people can't see to yell a warning. The worst part is that you have to pay for this average course. I'm not above paying, but I expect better quality for my dime.

Other Thoughts:

There isn't anything that I wrote that hasn't already been said I'm sure. Just because the surrounding area has crappy courses doesn't mean that it should get anything possibly over 3.25, that is just silly.

2) Short and long pins
3) Variety of natural hazards
4) Challenges for both FHBH and LHBH players
It is also just a beautiful course

Cons:

This course costs money ($3 on weekdays and $4 on weekends)
It can also get very busy. Sometimes the wait to play a basket is too long to bear. I have played on more than one occasion where someone I was playing with got fed up with the wait that they did not finish their round.
Some of the people who play at Morley are just down right shady. Drinking and smoking pot! I can stand the pot smoking that goes on at Morley. In additon, there have been a lot of complaints of people not returning lost and found plastic. This bugs me to no end, but it is getting even worse. People have been complaining of discs being stolen right out of their bag.
I recommend playing Morley because it is a fun disc golf course, but beware of stoners and thieves.
