Busiest DG course ever! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 1, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Unique looking course with a variety of challenges (narrows, uphills, downhills, blind shots)...this can force you into many unique situations more often than normal, requiring a variety of different shots besides your basic FH or BH; tomahawks, rollers, thumbers, etc...I've used the tomahawk throw the most on this course vs any other course I've played so far.
- Very well upkept
- Cool 2 basket practice putting area, with one of the putting baskets upgraded with woodchips (other basket still has dirt and can get muddy sometimes)
- Multiple pin positions (5 per hole) keep this course interesting...sometimes makes holes a completely different challenge from week to week
- A mostly friendly crowd with lots of dogs (I happen to love dogs, so this is a pro to me)

Cons:

- Too crowded!!! I've never waited so long on holes until I came to this course. Every hole is like a 3-5 minute wait, it can get worse, especially during peak times and on weekends..
- Too many holes intersect each other. This can get treacherous when it gets busy. I've recently been hit with a Nuke in the back of my neck, one of my friends hit someone on hole 13 from hole 1, and my friend has already hit 2 other people, so be extra careful and aware on this course!!!
- Pay to play ($3 on weekdays, $4 on weekends).
- For such a popular course, their parking lot is extremely small and its a dirt lot. They should put in an asphalt parking lot.

Other Thoughts:

Overall my favorite course in San Diego. The best hole on this course imo is the "top of the world" throw on hole 11. On hole 5 you get to air out your disc downhill 400+ft. Another cool thing they do is have ace pots (where you put $0.25 for two throws and win the pot if you ace the hole) on holes 15 and 16. Overall a beautiful, well-kept course. Cool pro shop that has discs, drinks, ice cream, and food for sale. My biggest complaint is that this course is very crowded and having long waits on each hole. I've never had to wait on each hole of a course until I came to Morley. The upside to the crowds is that I've met some very cool people here. There's definitely a small disc golf community here and you start recognizing familiar and friendly faces if you play here enough. Due to the crowdedness, its almost essential to jump in with other groups (especially if you're just playing by yourself or a small group) or to let others join your group, which makes it a great way to meet new people. Locals say its the busiest DG course in Southern California, if not the entire United States. People are here at all times of the day, all days of the week. You will hear "fore" quite a bit on this course. Heed this warning every time you hear it because many holes intersect on this course and a disc may be headed for your dome; so stay alert! (holes 2-3, 5-6, 11-12, and ESPECIALLY holes 15-16-18-19). This is the heart of San Diego disc golf and definitely worth checking out if you're in the area.

Great but Crowded 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 2, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

- Great layout. 5+ pin locations on each hole, changed frequently. Lots of technical shots. Really rewards players who can throw a variety of shots (i.e. forehand, tomahawk, rollers, etc.) Course flows really well, when it isn't crowded.

-Monthly Tournament is set up really well. The multiple tiers makes it so even the newer players can be competitive.

- Ace Pool on 15! Hit my first ace there and got paid for it. Gotta love a course where that happens.

- Located in a very easy to get to location in North Park.

- Meticulously taken care of. They really put the pay-to-play fees to work. The course is always upkept and nice looking. Trash is never out of hand. A great place to spend some time on a weekend.

- Pro shop/concession stand is always fully stocked with pretty much everything any of the golfers will need. Great guys running it. You can tell they care a lot about the course and the sport.

-Pro shop pays you a buck for every found disc. This is great, because it encourages people to turn plastic in when they find it, instead of just keeping it. Of course, you gotta pay the pro-shop back to get the disc, but I say a favorite disc is worth a dollar any day of the week.

Cons:

-The crowds can be out of control, especially on the weekend. If you don't want to wait for ten+ minutes on each hole, get there before 9 on a weekday. After that, it becomes too much of a hassle. Honestly, I would rate this course a 4 if it weren't for the crowds.

- Fairways can get a bit crowded, especially from hole 15 on. They managed to make a great course on the land they had available, but size restrictions mean that you get some cross over.

Parking lot is kind of small, considering how many people come out.

Other Thoughts:

Morley is Morley. Its the center of the sport in San Diego, and its a really fun course to play. Most of the shots are technical, and none of the holes are very long. Challenging enough to keep a veteran entertained, but not so hard that it will put off a new player.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of the crowds. While about 90% of of the people you meet out there are courteous and friendly, the other 10% can really ruin the experience. Some of them are new players who haven't really learned the etiquette yet, but most are just jerks. There's nothing more frustrating to me than getting stuck behind a group of six - eight, stoned/drunk college kids who feel the need to take 2-3 shots each on every hole. I would say this is more of a problem on the weekends, so if this kind of thing bugs you then come on a weekday morning.

Pros:

Well maintained course, with diverse pin locations per hole. Pro shop with snack bar. Each hole offers its own challenge from wide open fields, to wooded "tree tunnels". Locals are very friendly.

Cons:

The crowds. The problem with a great course is that everyone wants to play there. A lot of fairways cross, so you have to keep a lookout for other players discs.

terrific diverse course. hella crowded. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 17, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

new pin placements every monday. up to 5-6 different pin placements mean you are constantly playing a different course. tons of very technical holes. a few wide open bombs. many many trees. excellent elevation change. fully stoked pro shop. pleasantly chill locals.
in the morning you can even hear the animals from SD zoo when the wind is blowing!
tee signs are clearly marked and informative.
excellent tee pads (broom available at pro shop if so desired).
if there is even a hint of rain in the air, virtually all locals will stay away for fear of melting, meaning you can actually play unfettered disc golf! though it may be raining.

Cons:

this place is a wee bit too crowded for some souls.
suffice to say, this is in all likelihood the single busiest disc golf course on earth.
i highly recommend showing up prior to 9am. on a weekday.
playing any sort of "competitive" round on a weekend is prohibitively difficult. bring a hacky sack.
the crowded factor also enhances the danger level of being hit by discs.
in my experience, if the parking lot is full to the point you have no where to park your car, that is probably a hint that you dont want to be playing then anyway.

Other Thoughts:

if there were any way to get past the crowds issue, i expect this course would hold up very well on the variety and challenges that it offers. the longer layouts can be EXTREMELY difficult (meaning par is a great score).
on the other hand, in the shorter positions, the course can become a birdie fest.
snapper does a fantastic job of keeping the course in excellent running order. the grass is always immaculately mowed, and the landscaping in general looks like it i tended to by a staff of half a dozen (which it essentially is!)

Friendly Lines 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jul 1, 2012 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Shots, lots of variety, as a 99% RHBH player there were a few holes I had to get creative with. One or two bombers mixed in with challenging technical shots. A few blind holes that I always find fun.

-Proshop/local club and players. Ive found most courses that have a great proshop and local club usually have more than a handful of helpful discers around. Morley is no exception, Ive gone solo every time and always ended up playing with a group of locals to point the way.

-Location/Weather, Played 2 early morning rounds on a sunday, slightly cloudy, perfect tempature, slight breeze...welcome to san deigo.

*UPDATE POSITIVE*
-participate in the ace pot if its going on, fun for only 25cents is usually hard to come by, two people in my group got cage on rethrows, adds more interest to a fun rd.

Cons:

-Crossing Fairway Danger, this is definetly amplified by the amount of begginer/intermediate players that are here, and the sheer amount of people playing at one time. Hole 19 is particulary bad, you pretty much need your head on a swivel as two holes are throwing over your head, and hole 18 throws back toward you. But there are numerous spots throughout the course where you really need to pay attention.

-Crowds, this doesnt really bug me a whole lot, but later in the day a 3 hour round can really start to be a drag, and most of the people i played with thought that wasnt too bad.

-Pro-shop Danger zone, as you are standing at the proshop hole 14 throws at your back, most people with decent control, or anyone throwing on a hyzer really shouldnt come anywhere near hitting it...2 different people actually put discs into the pro shop while I was standing there, the first time was almost comical because it was really slow and the guy behind the counter probably could have caught it, the second time 13-14 y.o. kid lasered a driver into it, not so funny.

Other Thoughts:

Overall a pretty positive experience, fun shots, great weather and friendly people, definetly a must play if you are in the area. With that said, I cant see myself driving past kit carson to go play morley again for a while, just a much more relaxing round with less hazards.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 30, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

-Nice variety of holes. You'll be dealing with doglegs, straight shots, anhyzers, and the ocean wind will be playing tricks on you throughout
-Multiple pin locations will always keep you on your toes
-Course upkeep is good. Very little litter, well-maintained grass and trees, concrete and rubber tee pads are all in good shape.
-Disc golf-specific part of the park, and it's very pleasant and pretty.
-The locals are a nice, relaxed group.
-Well-stocked pro shop onsite.
-Very easy to navigate for first-timers.

Cons:

-$3 to play during the week, $4 on the weekends. I've played far better courses without ever having to pull out my wallet. The best part of disc golf is the vast majority of courses are free. Not here though.
-Unbelievably crowded. I had to wait on every hole, and was never told to play through, even though I was alone with three groups of two ahead of me
-Not a very long course. I think I pulled out a Teebird once to drive with, every other time it was a Roc. The holes are good, but they're all pretty much hovering around 300 ft., give or take.
-The crowds. I know I mentioned it already, but really, it bears repeating. It's easily the most crowded course I've ever played, and that's not a good thing.
-LOTS of overlapping fairways and cramped holes. You'll hear "fore!" a lot, and you should watch out when you do. This mixed with the crowds makes for a less relaxing round than you might find in a course that's more isolated and spread out.
-Did I mention the crowds?

Other Thoughts:

If you can manage to come at a non-peak time on a non-peak day, Morley Field is definitely worth coming to despite my grievances. It's one of the storied Southern Californian courses along with La Mirada and Huntington Beach, it's fun, and you'll see what SoCal disc golf is like.

Quick stop from out of town 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 26, 2012 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Concrete tee pads
- Variety of shots
- Some elevation
- Friendly locals
- Well maintained grass (you would have to really try to lose a disc out here)
- Pro shop is nice (discs and drinks)
- The weather is usually good
- Every hole has a ton of pin placements

Cons:

- Crowds (I played on a Thursday and had to wait a couple times so it wasn't bad but was told a 10 group line can form on a nice weekend day)
- Not very technical or long which is expected in an older course.
- Overlapping holes. You hear "fore" all game long, keep your head on a swivel. Also the end holes overlap badly, so much so that if you aren't an uber confident thrower the people on the criss crossing holes can mentally effect your throw... almost like throwing over water.

Other Thoughts:

I had a flight into San Diego and had some time to kill. Being from Oregon it is nice to play in a different area. It is also nice not to have to fight underbrush but as a result this course was a lot less technical than some of the local course in my area. It was great though. I joined up with some locals and they were very nice. I would have considered the course crowded based on what it is like on my home course but the people I played with said it was practically empty. The waits were never terrible and it was kind of nice to play a leisurely round. Definitely worth the drive out there if you are by the airport or in the area.

Classic course needs a facelift 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 2, 2011 Played the course:once

Pros:

-awesome amount of variety, 5+ pin positions per hole!
-concrete tees and baskets in decent condition
-great tee signs with map, distance to each pin, and current pin position stickers
-nice park with a great old school course vibe
-holes range from open to semi-open/semi-technical to tight and technical
-nice pro shop, lots of discs
-historical course, est. 1977, a cool piece of DG history
-maps and scorecards available
-locals friendly (but many lack etiquette)

Cons:

-SAFETY ISSUES: design is terrible in terms of safety. fairways cross, tees throw on other fairways or other tees
-inadequate parking, hole 1 throws on the parking lot
-very short course, little variety in distance and only 6 holes over 300'
-ridiculously crowded, many large groups, some won't let you play through

Other Thoughts:

This historical course dating from 1977 is a great piece of disc golf history. The course reflects the state of the game back then: shorter distances and finesse shots. The park itself is beautiful and, of course, the San Diego weather makes this a fantastic place to play a round.

There are many different kinds of shots here with lots of hidden and/or blind baskets. The number of different pin positions (between 5-10 per hole!) should make the replay value very high. On the other hand, many of these positions are quite similar perhaps just 20-30' further. This variety in basket position somewhat makes up for the lack of variety in distance. Only 6 holes are over 300' with just 2 of those over 400'.

One of the biggest issues here are the numerous safety hazards. The park barely fits 19 holes (it actually doesn't fit 19 holes) so some of the holes are literally on top of each other. There are a number of holes where a tee box will throw directly over another tee box or basket and there are countless places where fairways cross and groups will be throwing on one another. Particularly bad is the area around holes 15-19. Every hole there intersects at least one other fairway (except 17). Many baskets (depending on position) are very close to the next tee so stay aware of your surroundings. All of this is compounded by the fact that there are always hordes of people playing. It is a miracle that there have not been serious injuries here. Thank goodness there are no pedestrians.

It is great to have a pro shop and food on site. They have a good selection of discs for sale (including Course-stamped discs!), some discs for rent, and they also sell snacks and ice cream bars, etc. There seems to be a large community of golfers here and it must be a great place to play tourneys and be a part of the scene. It would be nice if the experienced locals would pass on more knowledge of etiquette to some of the chuckers that frequent the course. Since everyone has to check in at the proshop, maybe a short word about etiquette is in order, especially if it's a large group with one disc each. Hollering "clear on __" should be a course rule here for all the blind holes.

I loved playing this course. It has fun and challenging holes and has a really cool atmosphere. I don't mind an older course and I enjoy that style of golf but sooner or later this place is going to have to consider some revisions, if at least just for safety. There are just too many holes crammed into too small an area with too many golfers. Some might call it sacrilege but this place should have 15 well-designed holes instead of 19 holes that don't fit. I wanted to give it a 3.5 but I have to mark down for the safety issues. It usually wouldn't bother me so much but I just didn't feel safe here with so many people around and many of them not thinking twice about throwing on you.

Pros:

Well maintained groomed grass course
Cement or Rubber (over cement) Teepads
Great Hole Maps
Great people, very nice.
Pro Shop was nice, w. bathrooms.
Great fun time in heart of the city.
Fairly easy course, very playable and par-able for everyone.

Cons:

Too short. Outside of 1-2 holes, i used a teebird or lower. (I have a ~400' flat drive).

Too much fairway overlap.

RE: Layout the day i played -
Overwhelmingly forehand oriented (RHFH) or "SL" or "Buzzz" oriented (Long straight, slightly tight line with NO fade).
Many hard hook shots (needed seriously overstable)

Other Thoughts:

Anyone with a 300' (flat) drive would be able to park almost every hole.

Beginners with any sort of proficiency should be able to get par on every hole.

Due to the limited amount of space, creative pin placements with hard hooks and space saving concepts was prevalent.

I am an above average player and the course required "loose precision"; the windows and line concepts were fairly basic and easy to hit. I scored a -3 on the first try. (*i play and score "all holes are par 3".) I am sure if i had gone around again, or played multiple times, i could have dialed it in and gone -6 or better. Almost every drive (for me) was a park or "almost" park.

I happen to be a very proficient RHFH player, and more than 1/2 of the shots seemed to favor this method. It reached a point where i got tired of throwing FH and i started using alternate shots (turnover, hyzer, etc). <- i really just wanted to throw backhand and let it rip!

San Diego is beautiful. This course epitomizes it very well.

I think i saw a few dogs on the course, so i believe it's dog friendly.

Entirely too short and too easy to give a higher ranking. It was fun and i highly recommend to anyone in (or visiting) s.d.

(to visitors) -
This course could be very fun with 3-4 discs IF you take a "not so serious", "i'm on vacation" attitude.

If you choose to play it serious, make sure you have a full array of shots in the shorter ranges. It would be a big ego stroke to improve your score with each round and look "pro" doing it.

Pros:

Beautiful course and very very friendly and helpful! I recently moved from Michigan no more than a month ago, and everytime I have played people are willing to form up for 4 players or so. All you have to to is say hello and they seem to ask you to play with them. Everyone is willing to help and thats always nice for a new course you may not have played before! The tees change I think a few times a week and there is like 5-6 basket positions!!!! Always changing and always challenging! Every once in a while there is a 25 cent Ace pool going.... you just cant beat that. The holes have intricacies, and shots I have never had to shoot before.. The Scenery is great, coming from a different type of surroundings, its nice to see a wide range of wildlife and plant life at ever hole. Its not just a disc course but so much more! When you go, you WILL want to play another round, so be prepared. Its a course that makes you want to come back

Cons:

Well I would have to say the tremendous amound of "FORE'S" being called would have to be my only con. But what can you say about the most played course in the U.S. It is to be expected.

Also some may say that paying $3 on weekdays and $4 on weekends would be a con, but I say that I take the trolley and buses almost two hours everytime I go here. So Its worth if for me........I guess that would be a Pro??? paying $3 is nothing compared to the fantastic time you will have

Just try it.......nothing but Good should come out of it
