Pros:

Nice relatively easy course. It is nice to go to a course that has some challenge but isnt going to ruin your time if you let it rip.

Cons:

Too short, some of the Par 5's could be had in 3 or 4 easily. It would be nice if there were arrows pointing to the next tee box on the signs.

Pros:

Had my first ace here! Well maintained. Open enough to allow for some mistakes. Holes well marked and easy to follow.

Cons:

The last nine holes are not as challenging as the first nine. Can be busy on the weekend.

Other Thoughts:

It would be nice not to have to drive to the campsite office to pay, especially since there is a park ranger office near the parking area for the course.

Quick play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 10, 2011 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Alright...Newport News. This course is one of my two "home courses." Pros are...plenty of trash cans, big board with tourney postings and adverts for local club, picnic table at the start/end to catch up, there's a practice green right at the beginning of the course to warm up on as well. Each hole has a tower from which you can hang your bag as you shoot, which I find to be a nice touch. There are nice, big concrete tees from which to shoot. Also, there are plenty of trash cans at various places around the course, there are a couple benches in case you need to catch your wind, and porty-johns abound in the parking lot. For the most part, the course isn't too busy, although I DO make a point of avoiding NN on the weekends. Newport News and New Quarter are about fifteen minutes apart, and run by the same people, so the course is very well maintained and cleanly. There's not really any elevation change, but there's a decent mix of wooded and open holes. Also, signs at the main tee clearly shows the pin and alternate tee locations, as well as yardage. The wooded holes are tricky, as they should be, and require one to be precise. Again, this is my favorite style of play, so I dig it. This is also a pretty good course to try and rack up some aces...I've seen it more than once playing here, and never on the same hole.

Cons:

The park itself can get crowded, although kids tend to keep off the DG course. This is a pay to play park, although the pay office is about an eighth of a mile from the actual disc golf course. Most people I've seen just skip it, which is sad, as the local club really does a number here and on NQP. The only other downside is that I can out-drive 16 of 18 holes. There really isn't any room to open up, but the nice thing about this course is that it DOES teach precision, which is why it's in my rotation.

Other Thoughts:

For the record, I AM NOT a member of the local club, although I am a local. If you're a local, used to playing NQP, and want a quick game, then NN is it. She's definitely a short course, which could be either a pro or a con...I usually hit Newport News when I'm looking for a quick round. I have played this course @ 4 under using only my driver in 22 minutes, to give an idea of length. Still a great course though and, again, prime for aces. That being said, if you're coming from out of town and only get to choose between Newport News or New Quarter Park....hit New Quarter.

Pros:

-Easy to navigate
-2 starting pads per hole
-concrete pads

Do yourself a favor and play from the reds(long pads). This hole is fun from the whites but if you want a challenge go from the reds. If you have played here from only the whites, playing from the reds makes this a completly different course.

Cons:

Pretty flat, not much in elevation changes.
No water hazards

Simple, fun course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:May 25, 2010 Played the course:once

Pros:

Very traditional/basic disc golf course layout. Sometimes less is more, and this is the perfect example of that.
- Very good variety of holes. All the wooded holes are on the front 9, back is more open. Good job of using the terrain - trees, shrubs, etc - to create the different layouts.
- Course does a very good job of having long and short tees present different looks. If you play both tees, you'll see very different shots on many holes.
- Great course to introduce newbies to the game. It's not overly difficult, so will present plenty of birdies and ace runs for more advanced players.
- Very easy to navigate the course. Large posts indicating hole number and long & short tees. Only suggestion is to have hole number listed on more than one side because on several holes, the number was on the wrong side.
- I loved the hooks they have at the teepads to hang your bags. It's a very nice touch that I've only seen here and at New Quarter.
- Good, descriptive tee signs. Good tee pads.
- Great, enormous park that has everything - camping, fishing, hiking, all different sport fields. If you can't find something to do here, you really need to learn how to enjoy the outdoors.

Cons:

Some are going to have a problem with the layout and/or terrain. There are a few unimaginative/open holes. #2, at 487 ft and no real obstacles, is the perfect example of this.
- No real elevation. Course is essentially completely flat.
- This is not a course for big arms. Only 2 holes longer than 400 ft.
- Course is next to a main road, so not very secluded. About the only park of the park that doesn't give that "in the woods/nature" feel.

Other Thoughts:

I was surprised how much I enjoyed this course. As already stated, this is a relatively basic course, but it offers plenty of fun.
- Most of the holes were very similar - mostly open, throw around the trees and get close enough for your putt. #16 long stood out because it was so different. Blind teeshot to a basket blocked by trees and shrubs. There are enough openings to make a shot, but you can just as easily hit one of the trees. Very good risk/reward hole.
- The 2 holes that play along the fence (#3 & 9) presented a different look. On #9 especially, it presents another obstacle if you try to go through the trees (instead of throwing around the trees and fence).
- You could easily squeeze in a couple rounds here in under two hours and/or while having the rest of family occupied by everything else in the park.
- The course reminded me a lot of Sugaw Creek in Charlotte. Tehy're very comparable in layout, hole makeup, and so forth. And in turn, the similarity is reflected in the ratings. It's worth checking out if in the area.

-Clean safe park with alot of other activities going on
-2 concrete tee pads per hole
-bag holders
-benches and trash cans
-variety of wooded and open
-easy to follow for 1st timers
-great use of land
-beginer friendly but some fun shots for the more advanced players

Cons:

-most holes seem to be nearly the same length
-traffic noise

Other Thoughts:

The sign near the first tee says to pay the 2$ fee at the building 1/2 mile away. I played New Quarter Park earlier in the day so the shorter holes here were nice for a sore and tired body. There isn't too many courses in the area so play here and New Quarter in one day and it will be a good day. They aren't a long ride apart.

Nice municipal course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Feb 28, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course gives several different looks before settling on one for the back nine. #1 tees at the end of the parking lot along the fence line toward the road and is a straight forward 250 open fairway to a pin guarded by a pair of trees, good warmup hole. If your not warmed up yet you will be soon, #2 is wide open 400'er where you can air out, and make you wonder why it is that wide open pins are the hardest to approach? Nice and loose now? Good, now you dial it down for a bit while you enter the technical phase of our course. #3 is an open 200ish to a pin just tucked into the woods through that one section of open fence. Don't miss your entrance here or you may be pitching out. #4 - #8 are classic Virgina woods holes and probably my favorite part of the course, with #7 being the toughest. You begin to see daylight again at the ninth tee where you find a hard dogleg right and an open fairway. The back nine is where you enter the moderately wooded phase of the course, some of these seem repetitive but are enjoyable nonetheless due to the unique pin settings. Most of these are 200-250' through moderate fairways that usually offer a couple choices, but the challenge is getting the disc to the nestled targets, adding a nice dimension to therwise pitch-and-putt holes. These are mostly flat and through a large pine forest, but #17 has a bit of a grade and is probably the best of the back. The good news here is that except for the wooded section of the front you won't be spending much time (in any) searching for discs. It's also literally almost right on I-64, if you've got an hour to wait for the Hampton Roads Tunnel traffic to clear then you've got time to play NNP.

Cons:

The course isn't long, I can hit double digits down from the short tees and I have a rag arm, but the long tees spice things up a bit. Being in Tidewater, it lacks the elevation changes I require from a great course. The back nine definitely has a deja vu element.

Other Thoughts:

On one hand you could look at this as a short, flat course without any wowzer holes, on the other hand there's an element of fun here that keeps me coming back here on my trips to VA Beach (though New Quarter is my first priority). There are lots of birdie opps but for the most part you have to earn them, which along with the technical woods holes pushes this one up to Very Good for me.

Pros:

Multiple tee pads. Some challenging shots. If you are interested in course scores, the par 5's make it very easy to shot under for the course. Most par 3's are driveable from the tee for even a beginner like myself.

Cons:

Flat. Not a really challenging course if you play by the par card. Really crowded when I played around 2:30. This and New Quarter are the first courses I've ever had to pay to play.

Other Thoughts:

I enjoyed the course. Its a good break from playing only one course constantly. New Quarter Park is still more challenging and has better scenery.

Enjoyable Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 6, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course has a good mix of open and wooded holes, and if played from the red tees, some are moderately long. It seems as though the course is well maintained, and there are some challenging tee shots over, around, and through fences.

Cons:

It hadn't rained in a few days when I went and while I understand that mostly, it was just morning dew, there were a few spots where the ground was saturated. The transition between the front and back nine is a bit confusing, but with some help from the map, we made it work. Since it is in a coastal area, there isn't a lot of elevation change, and some of the wide open holes could be longer (why have nothing in the way if you have to hold back on your distance?).

Other Thoughts:

Apparently you have to pay to play this course. A friend of mine lives up the street, so we figured we'd head over in the morning, and apart from the one other group that was playing, we didn't see anyone else there at all. I saw that the course gets busy, so I would imagine that going early (9-11AM) would be ideal on the weekends to avoid crowds.

Better than Bayville 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 21, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Beautiful setting. Good variety of foliage obstacles -- bare tree trunks in the woods and lush, low foliage out in the open. A few "Jedi" holes (3 & 9) where you have to navigate fences into and out of the woods. Decent mix of wooded and open holes -- several opportunities to really chuck it out there. Tees are in excellent condition and generally easy to find. Hole 17 is the highlight. Course map is helpful.

Cons:

Kind of a short course. Recommend playing from the reds no matter what. Obviously, traffic going from Norfolk to Newport News sucks.

Other Thoughts:

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 20, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Long shots and technical shots. The first three holes on the front nine will lull you into a false sense of confidence, be ready to dial it back when you get in the woods. On hole three if you don't make it through the gate you will have to work for your second shot. With the fence gone back nine is wide open. If you need a confidence builder play the back nine first. If you are over sixty you do not need to pay to play.

Cons:

The park gets a lot of use with special events. They shut the course down two or three times a year. It is best to call ahead on the weekends. As with any course in the Tide Water area you need bug spray in the spring and summer. You have to drive all the way to the camp site check in on the other side of the lake to sign in.

Other Thoughts:

They have a great tourmanent in November. Check web site for dates.Very well managed. If you want to take the step up in to competion this is a good place to start.

Fun, solid course 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 4, 2009 Played the course:once

Pros:

Great setting...mature hardwood and pine trees--I pulled into the park to 3 deer grazing
Very well manicured
Excellent signage
2 well marked tees for each hole with bag poles and concrete tee pads
Very intuitive flow (except crossing over from the front nine to the back nine--just check map near tee one...or download map--hint...the tee pad for 10 is just to the right as you are standing on the tee pad at 1)
Benches at tee pads
Garbage cans throughout
Good usage of a flat terrain
Good mix of wooded holes and "open" holes--though even the open holes have enough trees so you aren't just throwing across flat, open fields
Good mix of hyzer, anhyzer and straight holes
Wooded holes have at least one, some as many as three distinct paths to the basket from the tee pad--not just throwing and praying
Simple enough for beginners (some of the regular tees have distances under 200', yet challenging enough for skilled players (especially if you pick a path on holes 3-8 and work on executing your pathway)
Great place to introduce people to the sport
Very "fast" course...it was threatening T-Storms when I played today and was about 6:30 in the afternoon with no one on the course to slow me down and it took about 35 minutes or so

Cons:

For what it is, this is a very solid course without many "cons" based on design flaws or lack of upkeep...the only "cons" are not avoidable:
Flat course...no elevation change at all
No "champion style" BIG holes for the big arm drivers

Other Thoughts:

All in all, if you are in the area or for some reason driving through the area this is a course that would be worth your time to play

Good course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Apr 17, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

The closest thing to a home course I've got. This is officially a pay-to-play course, but I haven't been carded in 30+ rounds. I'm not really sure where you're supposed to pay anyway, but it certainly isn't anywhere near the course. Given all the other stuff in the park, I don't know that the money raised by disc golf really goes back to the course anyway. I don't understand why I can walk the course with my dog for free but if I want to throw a frisbee while I do it I should drive 5 miles out of my way to pay $2. Anyway, rant over. Maybe I should have put that in the cons section.

The pros are that it is straightforward and signed very well. Two paved tee pads per hole (red is long for some reason, white is short here) plus some gold and blue posts which are tough to find. I've never played them but I have stumbled across them from time to time. There is a great mix of true tree holes with real fairways and more open holes, but few straight shots. There is a Tuesday evening mini, but I haven't made it there yet. You get to see some deer if you're out there at a non-busy time.

Cons:

Can get muddy. I see lots of "Boy Scout" or "Church Youth Groups" out here playing in a pack of 10 or 15 with one real disc golfer among them. Usually they're really good about letting you through though. I'm always worried that someday I'll actually be carded by a Ranger and have to learn where I'm supposed to go pay. The public par is a joke. You shoot from the closest tees and you get an extra 7 strokes to do it. There are 2 "Par 5s" under 400 feet, a 178 foot "par 4", and two par 4s under 300 feet. It is reasonable to play the whole thing as a par 3 knowing that there are 3 or 4 holes where you'll need a nice drive, a nice approach, AND a nice putt to make par and a hella lucky shot to get a bird. A few of the holes are close to the road, so the road noise distracts a bit, but it isn't bad.

Other Thoughts:

Favorite hole is #6 from the longer tee. Desperate par 3. If you make it to the short tee on your first shot you're doing well. #15 and 16 are also fun since neither allows the straight shot but both have multiple other options.

Newport News DGC 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jan 3, 2009 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Great course that has benches, trashcans and bag stands throughout. The variety of the holes makes for different throws to be used. There are signs on the pins when the next tee isn't obvious pointing you where to go (top of the pole midst the chains). The ranger station, campground entrance, has score cards for your hole distance reference.

Cons:

Heavy leaves in the fall/winter make it hard to find the discs after throwing. Wet woods long after it has rained. It can get crowded during the summer and difficult to 'play through' when multiple holes have lines. If you do not have a seasons pass you have to drive to another entrance and pay and then make a left and left again into the entrance where the DGC is (see below).

Other Thoughts:

This course has great signage, 4 tees (check online for the blues and golds) and 1 pin per hole. 9 in the woods, 9 open in the field, Favorite Holes:1, 10, 11. If you do not have a seasons pass you have to take the 2nd entrance and pay $2.15 for the day, keep your receipt as the Park Rangers do patrol the course and will ask to see proof.

Great all around course! 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Nov 2, 2008 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This course can be used by anyone of any skill level/age and be challenged and enjoyed. All of the baskets have 2 tees and some as many as 4. Poles to hang bags, benches at most tees, concrete pro (red) and am (white) tees, and good direction signs. With this and a course that is well maintained by the local club and city park people you have a great environment for all.

Cons:

This course can be hard to play in the fall when the leaves fall. They are so thick that it can sometimes be like finding a needle in a hay stack when you search for your disc after your drive from the tee. Use bright discs it does help. It can also be crowded on nice days. To find the blue and gold tees you will need help from a local.

Other Thoughts:

Watch out for hole 7. It is very technical. My favorite is 3. Its a blind shot over or through a fence into some hardwood trees. It can be aced. I have come close and witnessed it done. It is a pay to play course and you have to travel to the other side of the reservoir where the campground is to pay. They also have discs available to buy (Innova and Lightning) and rent. Drinks and snacks are available..

Nice Simple Course. 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 31, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Easy to follow set up, easy to get from one hole to the next. Nice tee pads, colored to match the length. Porta potty's right near the beginning of the course. Most if not all baskets easily seen from tees. Maps are laid out nicely and helpful.

Cons:

Sort of simple. I wouldn't say a beginniners course, but not too challenging. All Par 3. The front nine have a nice mix of open and wooded throws, but the back nine are sort of bunched together. The back nine also are near a busy intersection and the traffic, while not distracting, takes away from the overall experience. Most DG courses feel like a hike made even more fun, the traffic took that aspect away here.

Other Thoughts:

An easy course to find and has some unique features. The front nine have a fence you have to navigate or stay away from in two holes and a creek and bridge make for fun in the woods, but the back nine have none of that and feel shoved together. The only thing preventing me from giving this course a 3.5 or more was the back nine experience. A nice time of DG if you live near, but I'm not sure it was worth the drive. My friends and I drove 45 minutes to play. Luckily New Qtr Park was less than 10 miles away. Still, not knocking the park completely, if I lived nearby it would be a great practice park and I'd play it often. Just not sure I would drive a long way or go out of my way for this experience.

Update 04-13-2009: I stand by all I said as I've just re read my original review, but I'd like to add again that this is a fun course. The front nine is far more challenging than the back nine, but the overall experience was a great time. Just maybe not worth a long drive. Also like to add that this park is probably the easiest course for a first time player that I have ever played. It is so well laid out from one hole to the next and marked so well that it is easy to follow and all tee boxes (concrete) have posts to hang bags marked clearly with the number of each hole. All holes also have maps showing the path from tee to basket as well as distance and pars. Very First Time Friendly!

Solid Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 28, 2008 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is a very enjoyable course. Perfect course for a beginner in my opinion. The wooded sections are fairly difficult, and force you to actually make some pretty difficult decisions instead of just throwing and hoping for the best. The landscape is great, the moderate hills and creeks were awesome. There are wooden fences on some holes that play pretty interestingly, because you can't cut through low under the trees. Oh and they also look cool.

Aside from the course itself, the land is well maintained and the amenities are sweet. Some of the best graphics of the hole I've ever seen are displayed at the tee box of each hole.

Cons:

The only negative thing I can really come up with is that it is a bit short, but that can easily become a pro if you happen to be in a rush and just want to get a round in.

Other Thoughts:

Favorite Hole:
#7, Par 4
There is a tree right in front of the tee box that forces you to make a decision right off the bat, pretty cool.

#17, Par 5
First hole I ever eagled, so maybe a bit biased, but aside from that there is a nice creek running in the middle of this hole and it has a nice down then uphill to it.

This shorter course is a very nice complement course to the New Quarter course just down Interstate 64, which is very long.
