How To Make It In America (In A Sport That Gets No Love)

McBeth won $42303.90 in prize money in 2013.
Dang, really? That's actually way more than I thought would even be available. I just always feel bad when I see payouts and someone in 4th place gets like $600... you'd need to do that so many times over to even support yourself. I guess McBeth is just cleaning up!

edit: looking at the chart there is a significant drop in the pay, it seems. From Nikko to Paige is nearly 10k difference... I mean, good for them but it still seems like you have to be at the very top in order to make a decent living.

2013 winnings (number of tournaments):

Mcbeth: $42303.90 (33)
Feldberg: $28302.63 (28)
Schusterick: $34850.60 (35)
Wysocki: $33256.04 (35)
Locastro: $26094.59 (30)
Steve Rico: $15363.00 (24)

Exactly. And that's not including disc sales, and bonuses which Innova gives him for winning tourneys. Plus whatever else he makes from other sponsorships. I wouldn't be surprised if he cleared 60K last year.

Yeah I was going to add that in. The top players in the sports always demand the most sponsorship dollars. Michael Jordan is still making 90 million a year! In ball golf Tiger has been said to get paid 1 million just to show up for a tournament. I don't think we will reach that kind of level but you never know!

How do they get paid for discs? I am guessing that McBeth gets crazy bonuses from Innova considering how many discs he gets sold.

Do we want to see our top players be able to make a comfortable living playing Disc Golf? That would be nice.
If Disc Golf players don't make a bunch of money, will the sport fade away? Not likely!

20 years ago I was a bagging advanced player but the job where I was working was winding down. I considered going pro and trying to live the life. Instead I took another job and now I have a house, cars, and all kinds of toys. I have a kid and 2 grandchildren. I played more disc golf tournaments last year than most people on the planet. A job makes it easier but probably prevents me from being a superstar.

Puh-lease....

We all know it's tall socks, 'fro-y hair, and a bad attitude that makes one a "superstar." :| :| :| ;)
