[Discraft] Discraft Surge

Just picked up 4 more ESP Surge discs!!! The Academy by me had them on Clearance for $6.99 each, so grabbed 4! 1 had a really high PLH and FAF, 1 was low PLH and DAF and the other 2 were right in the middle, so I think I scored pretty good!!! The 1 that I currently bag is right in the middle, so now I have 5, and I love throwing this disc. Now I have my backups!!

Yeah, on clearance here too. I plan on picking them up as water discs. I wonder what Academy is going to do with discs in general? Ours barely has anything left.

Mine was like that the last 2 weeks after I cleaned them out some. Bought a bunch of Terns, JLS, PLS, OLF, Aviars, and such. They just stocked back up within the last 2-3 days here. Didn't think I was going to see the Surges again because they were the only ones marked Clearance, everything else just has SALE stickers. But I'm glad I did!!!

Our Terns are gone. Not even a spot for them. OTOH, our store is doing a massive make over. Hoping when all done, we get those, and other, molds back.

I believe only in Z plastic, not that it's a bad thing. Plenty of old ESP seems to be out there and available still.
They are still technically in production in ESP. just haven't been run a long time. There will be ESP Glo Surges for Ledgestone and I am super pumped about them. They also said Swirly ESP in the future. Whenever that may be....

I have never had a problem finding an ESP Surge. I always have one in the bag. I personally prefer ESP to Z for the Surge. The Cryztal sparkles from a couple years ago were also sweet

Guy I was playing with happened upon one left behind yesterday in ESP - felt like a really nice disc.

Agree. I've actually thrown good Z Surges, but they're rarer than good ESP Surges. Some of the Zs tend to be really flat and glideless.

I've bagged a Surge for a decade. Great driver for those semi-understable drives you want to go just short of max distance. I don't use it a ton, but I find a shot or two a round for it.

Actually, the best Surge I ever threw was a Z that had the thumb grip pad on it. IDK why, but it was simply perfect. Really domey with exceptional glide.

Did i get a dud?

I bought a Z surge 171g thinking it would be a great disc for max distance while i slowly work on my form. I can throw my crank about 320, a dx 165g destroyer about 300. But this surge has no glide and dumps right HARD. I know I'm lacking power, but honestly no matter the release angle this thing hasn't even come close to flying flat for me. It looks pretty flat top to me, but i don't have another to compare it to.

I throw the crank and destroyer (which is nicely beat in) straight with a slight S line. So i can't have that terrible of form. I also get a good S line with my Mantis nice and straight.

I had read that some people got glidless surges, maybe i got one?

My personal experience is that the Surge has better glide in ESP than Z. Source - several ESP and one Z.

As a Surge lover I can tell you that Z Surges have never been good for anything than utility shots. Glideless and "overstable". Get an ESP and you will be pleasantly surprised. That is, if they ever make them again.

I agree. I've seen some good Z Surges, but they're much rarer than good ESP Surges. My advice would be to stay away from any FLAT Z Surge. Those things don't glide and can be surprisingly beefy and hard to throw.

The Z Surge just isn't a very good disc. I don't know why. Its just one of those molds that doesn't translate well across different plastics. I'd say the same thing about champion Destroyers. Those things are super beefy and glideless compared to stars.

What if I told you that you'd probably see more distance from something slower like a Valkyrie or Roadrunner? You're welcome to throw what you want, but those warp speed drivers aren't helping you.

Has anyone been brave enough to try one of the new swirly ESP ledgestone surges? I'm worried it will be clunky aswell.

Unless the Zs are beat or you have a cannon, no you're not going to get too much glide out of them. To echo everyone else that already posted Zs are generally a bit more overstable than ESPs; I pair a Z and ESP for those reasons, sometimes I want glide with less stability and other times I want the opposite.

May have ordered two:rolleyes:

I'll have them by Friday for sure and will be able to throw them then. So glad I revisited this mold after a few year hiatus.

I hear you, and take your advice, thank you. I have an avenger SS and X heat (super domey) plus just got a X mantis that should compliment the Z once it beats in.

The field i throw in for practice is always windy, and I've found the really under stable discs to be really touchy out there. I definitely wasnt looking for over stable, the surge was listed as 10 5 -1 3, which seemed like something i could grow into.

Apparently i was wrong, haha. I guess i need to revisit those under stable discs. Maybe a Z heat instead of X. Same for the avenger SS maybe.

The Surge is definitely a disc that can be grown into. I think you just got a dud Surge. The great majority of the ones I've thrown (probably 10) have been nice fliers. I'd put the flight numbers of an average Surge more at 11, 5, -2, 2. They have some noticeable high speed turn, and a mellow late fade. Most Surges don't fade super hard. If you decide to dabble into another Surge, look for something ESP and with some dome. I think flat Surges stink and they don't fly well at all.

I am sad to report that, according to someone I trust, the surge is going/already OOP.

This sucks. I don't like the punisher and the kong is alright but tis no surge replacement.

:'(
