[Innova] Innova Shryke

Did anyone else notice that the Champ Shrykes dont seem to be in jolly launcher plastic. Seems like something more opaque and closer to luster. The one I have definitely isnt that jolly launcher clear sort of blend, and I kinda wish it was for the sake of grip.

Totally agree. I have to admit that I bought a Champion Shryke. It's pink (reddish hot pink) and is more of a luster Champion than anything else; it's certainly not clear Jolly Launcher, and it feels a bit softer than very firm JL Champ plastic.

My Champ Shryke is more overstable than my Star Shryke, but I like it better. It throws more consistently for me. The Star Shryke will sometimes bomb for me, and sometimes just not come out of my hand right (and this is while practicing form with Terns, Shrykes, Destinys, TLs, FDs, etc.), but the Champ Shryke comes out of my hand pretty consistently.

As another analogy, the Champ Shryke is a bit like my Hannah Leatherman Star Tern. My HL Tern is a full 175g and is more overstable than my Star and Champion Terns. Doesn't go as far, but is very consistent in its flight pattern if I release it correctly on a straight trajectory. Likewise, my Champ Shryke is more OS than the Star Shryke, but I just seem to have a better rapport with it. Not sure how to explain further.

TL; DR: Champ Shrykes: lustery plastic, nice feel to it.

Received a 168g color glow champ hoping that the combo of lightweight/champ-glow will be a bomber out of the box. For someone that caps out at 420ft but can throw 390ft consistently do you guys think this will compare to a fresh ddx? My outlaws go lazerbeam and my ddx's have noticeable turn at that range for me. If I rip my ddx on a hyzer it'll flip up and turn, but sometimes the turn is just too much. I hope I can get my shryke to have a longer and tighter turn.

I'm more in the boat of topping out at 390' with my Wraiths so I'm very much looking forward to your review.

Same #'s as the Groove. They prolly just filled the concave section on the bottom of the wing in. :p

The Shryke is a million times better than a Groove.

Bummer to hear they aren't making them in JL plastic either. IMO that's the best blend of champion plastic Innova's had in a long time.
The stuff they have now is gummier, more opaque and seems to have air bubbles in it.

Yeah I really hope they run them in jolly launcher.

It is, huh? ... see what a difference filling in that concave part made?

Do you think this is the end of JL in general? If so, time to stock up on Roc3s, Teebirds, Firebirds, and Thunderbirds to sell at jacked up prices in a few years. Any other molds that are popular in JL that we should start hording now?

Just because they didn't run the shryke in JL (yet) doesn't mean they are going to stop running the others in JL. Sometimes the mold dictates what plastic you need to use in order to meet certain weights.

except that "JL" isn't actually a specifically formulated blend of champion, it's just the nickname for how it's been coming out the last couple years. If they used up that batch of pellets and the new batch is different, it could be the end of "JL", and the start of a more opaque, pearly era of champ plastic.

It's not like they are going to just randomly order batches of pellets and say oh well this is just how it turned out this time.

But that's what Innova does, to keep costs down. They go buy large quantities of "leftovers". They could get picky and specific, but then the materials and therefore the discs would cost more.

Sure costs fluctuate based on materials but it's really not a complicated process. I'd hate to see a return of slick champ plastic bc they have poor business practices.

Yeah SD86 is right though. This has actually been discussed on here quite a bit in other threads. It's not economical at the scale of disc companies and for the prices they sell for to buy specifically formulated batches of plastic. So Innova (and Discraft and most other disc companies) buy leftover batches from larger companies. They can get the basic types of pellets they want, but not the exact same formula each time they buy. That's why Innova's plastic blends change so much over the years. It's why we had "soft Star" a couple years ago or really waxy DX before that or the stiffer Thunderbird DX which recently ran out. It's why they only ran CE plastic for 3 years and then ran out of it. JL wasn't something Innova formulated to give us gripper champion plastic. It was just the batch they bought that ended up being that way. If they've run out of it or can't buy more batches anymore, we very well might be headed back to slicker, harder champion plastic.

Well I suppose we can hope that changes as the sport grows. That's part of the reason I like prodigy so much, great feeling grippy plastic.

Prodigy does have very nice feeling plastic, I agree. I'm not sure exactly how they are sourcing that. I don't think I've ever heard anyone talking about it who had any inside knowledge. I know that the MVP brothers' dad owns a plastics company so they can source consistent plastics from there.

This is why I have 8 new DX Thunderbirds.

maybe "math" can help this discussion...

manta estimates Innova's annual revenue between $2.5 - $5 million, a $3.75MM avg. let's use $2.5MM to account for the subtraction of sales from any non-disc entity

$2.5MM / $6.75 (very rough estimate of per disc sale price across all plastics and selling entities) = ~370,000 discs

average shrink of high-risk products typically is around 5%, and could be higher due to the volatility of injection mold manufacturing. but for our sake....370,000 x 1.05 = ~388,000. let's go with 400,000

so, 400,000 discs x 170g (again, very rough estimate between all weights produced) / 1,000 = 68,000 kg plastic pellets

FTL are ~44,000lbs = ~20,000kg.......so, 68,000 / 20,000 = 3.4 FTL plastic pellets per year. let's round up to 4 FTL

now, this is where someone in the plastics industry can chime in....

how much leverage does Innova have in regards to plastics variation / plastic specs when their "average" purchasing amount is 4 FTL per year?

Finally got my hands on a champ shryke. So far I'm pretty impressed with how much torque it can handle and how easily it gets some distance. I still prefer the star shryke for the easy disance but the champ has its usefulness

Not sure if I got a super flippy champ shryke but it seems less stable than my champ terns. It's 171g.. thrown into a slight headwind it stood no chance, turned and cut into the ground. The course I played today didn't allow for too many big shots that need room to work so I only got a couple good throws in. Had another throw in a tailwind and I still saw the disc break right a bit at first but managed to go straight 450' before fading out at the end.

Seems like it might overlap too much with my terns, but we will see.
