Highbridge Hills - Wisconsin

I certainly would hope that anyone passionate about investing does the proper due diligence prior to handing over their hard earned $$$. Unlike many others before them, myself included, just saying ...

Highbridge was in pretty nice shape this past weekend. 12 of us drove up from Iowa and stayed in the Honka House Fri-Mon. We played Gold, Granite, Blueberry and Woodland, all of which were in awesome condition. Bear was not in awesome condition. John is friendly, helpful and very accommodating; course pro Whatsherface was less so (story for another time). This was my first time playing DG with the aid of motorized carts, and damn is that a nice way to play!

First pic is the view from the Honka House's deck, looking down Blueberry hole 3. Last pic is from the bottom of the meadow looking up toward the house. Middle is just one of the many lovely fairways out there, though I have no idea what hole or even what course that is from. I'll blame the liquid diet.

Already looking forward to going back.

I've been heading up this way for years, sometimes 2-3 times a year for vacation, but only took up disc golf recently, so I just made my first trip here in July.

The signage on the course could have been better, otherwise the whole experience was beyond awesome. I played Woodland Greens and Blueberry Hill and couldn't have been happier.

I saw a for sale sign out on the course that trip and thought it was a joke. I'll be disappointed if they close, as there aren't too many other options for disc golfing in the area.

Lol whatsherface haha. I've played a round with her, and I don't like to judge, but doing so anyways, I feel from what I got playing the round with her, she may not be the best suited to introduce all these new people to the sport. I'll leave it at that unless otherwise asked why.

On a positive note, I've gone up to Highbridge at least 10 times since April or May, and it's been borderline pristine for every trip in terms of conditions (minus the uncontrollable mud and of course signage).

Namar very glad you had a good experience. I too would like the gossip on Abby but if you're not the gossiping type than that's fine lol. My group of friends yearly trip is coming up end of this month the 24th through the 27th and I already am dying with anticipation!

Yes Jeremy why? Spill it! haha

Namar I'm curious what exactly was the issue with bear? Was it just long grass or what?

Not sure but I think that middle picture is halfway down hole 3s fairway on granite ridge.

That sounds about right. I would have to say Granite is my favorite course out there. Blueberry is also amazing, but having a cart is a serious tiebreaker. Gold is very awesome, but just isn't as "fun" as the other two.

I wanna hear about whatsherface.
She got all up in our **** about wanting enough carts for our whole group. She claimed it wasn't fair to the other folks out there that our group should use so many carts, but we had reservations a year ago, spent a day in the car just to get there and a couple thousand bucks once we got there. Plus she is driving around alone in her own cart; if it's so unfair then give up your cart that isn't making any money for the business.
We also waited until 11am the second day to go get carts, just to let other folks have an early crack at them (we were up there at 8am the first day). No one was there by 11am so we figured it was all good for us, but apparently she had "promised" some carts to another group. John had no idea about her arrangement(s) and was completely on our side, so all was well and we went on our merry way. We even returned the carts after playing a single round on Granite, despite paying for the whole day, without so much as a thank you or offering to refund some cart money.

There were a dozen or so dudes out there building some new cabins and treehouses on the Gold course, and they were apparently camping in the woods. John asked us if they could come up and shelter in the basement of the Honka House if some potentially nasty weather headed our way. We said of course, but apparently Abby told them that we were asking them to come up to the house and party with us. Which we had NOOOOOOO interest in. So all of a sudden we go from chilling in a house we paid our ****ing money to stay in, to being overrun by a bunch of randoms and seriously messing up the vibe. Not only that, but all our stuff is just out in the open while a dozen strangers are wandering around in our place. Not.cool.at.all.

Also another dude (that was invited in by one of our own group, yet another story) whipped out a shotgun and started passing it around the room barrel first. I like guns and own a couple, but his lack of muzzle discipline was astounding. Swung that **** right past 4 of our heads as he pulled it out of the case. He was promptly escorted from the place.

Despite all this ridiculousness I am already looking forward to going back. Just be careful what you agree to, and deal directly with John whenever possible.

Abby- If you are reading this and feel that anything needs clarifying or explaining, please do so. You seem to have a sweet gig going and I have no interest in messing that up, especially if the improvements are to continue, but a little customer service goes a long way.

looooong grass, terrible baskets. It just has the feel of a course that is being given back to nature.

The other courses are fantastic and I am sure you will have a great time, it really is an amazing place.

The baskets are actually 9 of the old baskets that were on Woodland previously. The baskets now on WG are the old Bear baskets. Last year bear was in amazing shape and I was told the best it has ever been (we didn't play it 3 years ago the first year we went up there so I can't compare it). I really hope it is mowed up in 2 weeks as I like that course! I guess now if you want to play 18 you can play 1-9 on The Bear and finish 10-18 on woodland which is similar to what was done at 07 worlds. Thanks for the info Namar

well damn I wish we would have thought to play this layout! I hope Bear is cleaned up by the time your group makes it up there. Even if it isn't, Gold, Granite, Blueberry and Woodland were all in spectacular condition for us.

Well I dont even know why I just didnt get it over with. I dont like to gossip per say, buuuut I just feel that some things need to be said. You can believe me or not but this is all the truth and my best evaluation of the situation.

I had no arguments or real conflicts, but I was discing by myself and joined her and two others from elsewhere to play a round on Woodland. To be clear, Im no pro at all at disc golf, and I am not trying to brag or anything but I can hold my own to a certain extent. While me and the other two were hitting lines, parking holes and banging putts with relative consistency, I cant remember one, even halfway remarkable shot coming from her. Airballing short putts, hitting the first trees off the tee, etc. Now Im not one to care at all how you play, as long as we're all having fun, but from what I understand shes the one leading lessons to many of the visitors and first timers. Now she couldve been just not caring much at all, and not putting any effory forth since it was just a casual round on a relatively non busy day, but it was enough to raise an eyebrow.

Other than how she played, her overall attitude and ettiquette was just kind of unsettling and to be honest, kind of rude. Interrupting us, talking and not paying attention while we are throwing, listening to half of what you are saying then completely abandoning her attention and just talking to the next person or just stops listening all together. At one point she asked us if any of us had any acid for her, cause she "could really use some right now", as well as other paraphernalia. Now Ive seen multiple families with kids that have visited, and that is NOT a good thing to hear coming from the one who guides people around the course. Also, she just bailed our group without saying anything, not even a "nice to meet you" or anything. Nothing at all.

I really am not trying to judge her, and I feel bad about this, but the whole time playing I got a very uneasy vibe from her. Thats about it :/

^^ I was hoping we just caught her on a bad weekend, but that sounds sadly consistent with our encounters.

I wish I had a million bucks to donate, because Highbridge really needs 2 or 3 full time groundskeepers, 1 or 2 people to run the retail side (pro shop, reservations, cart rentals, etc.), and then John could preside over it all without having to do it all.

Yup. This is exactly my feeling. My friend paid $30 for a "lesson" while we were there because John promised that it would "improve your game". The lesson consisted of her playing a round with us, doing all the things you mention and giving 0 advice to the person that paid until he asked about it. To which she replied "Try throwing that Trilogy disc instead". End of lesson. She was also asking us if we could get her pills (Vicodin).

Even aside from Abby, everything about Highbridge is pretty unprofessional. Like the fact that the "pro shop" is a nearly empty, dirty room with a few bins of overpriced discs and some overpriced towels/shirts/etc. Now, don't get me wrong, I love unprofessional, had a blast at Highbridge, and plan on going back. It just was not at all what I expected.

When I was at Highbridge for worlds I bought a set of minis that were color coordinated for the courses that were in use. Do they still sell the mini sets?
