Pros:
Nice 18 hole layout good for mixed skill levels, featuring good elevation and mix of open and wooded shots, with top of the line Discatcher baskets. Pro players will appreciate the tight tunnels on the front nine. Lesser skilled players will like that its not obscene in length. I really enjoy the wooded to open to back to wooded holes here. Its something that we rarely see in these parts. The fact that they did it with a piece of land this small. Course for the most part flows well. Concrete pads and signage installed help navigation. Literally right off the highway and easy to find.
Cons:
When you step up to Tee #1 which is a downhill bomb hole, you think you're in for a course with fairly spacious tees, then reality hits when you see a much smaller tee on Hole #2. Unfortunately most of the tee boxes here were like the latter. I also don't like Hole #1 being squeezed between the entry road and the dog park. I don't like holes 8 and 9 crossing, but in a small town like this, you can get away with that.
I was also about to praise the designers for keeping other elements of the park and busy U.S. 81 away from the line of fire. Then I got to the last seven holes. Hole 12 at 316' is dangerously narrow between a parking area and a line of trees. If the parking area isn't busy, you might be okay, but if it is, this may be hard to play. Hole 13 is an open bomb hole facing south (i.e. into the prevailing wind direction in Kansas) with the northbound lanes of busy U.S. 81 to your right. Yeah, it will take a terrible throw to get out there but I can see a RHBH shot into a stiff headwind flipping over and doing just that. Hole 15's basket is located on an island in the middle of an area where people park. Hole 17 is an even more dangerous example of the same thing. There's a playground just off to the left on Hole 18. Might want to add a mando --> to the tree in front of it.
Getting up and down the steep hillside on the downhill holes is a little difficult if its muddy or you have bad legs. Same with getting over the drainage ditch. How about some more parking spaces?
Other Thoughts:
For years, I drove through Concordia looking at the parcel of land this course now occupies thinking it would be cool to put baskets in there. The town has had two awful 9 holers available for awhile that just weren't fun to play due to space conflicts and lack of maintenance (the course at Cloud County CC, which this course borrowed baskets from temporarily, has recently been improved a bit).
This is a welcome and unique addition and kind of fills in a gap that was lacking a quality course. Definitely worth the stop, and if you're trying to run up your course count, the Cloud County course is less than half a mile away.
