Seems Forgotten

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 19, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

WHAT TO EXPECT: Local park 9 hole course built/reimagined by local Boy Scout group. Plays between two earthen dam walls and utilizes a walking trail as the primary fairways. Scenic setting, short in distance, with signs that effort was put into this course early on, but has fallen by the wayside in more recent years.

AMENITIES: There was a bench at every tee. There is a beautiful lake, spillways, and creek on the property. Very pretty community park.

TEES/SIGNAGE/BASKETS: Short and small but ok tee pads made of pea gravel, signage is ok but showing signs of age, baskets are Mach's and showing age but still in decent shape.

DESIGN (PROS): Mainly a pitch and putt, couple holes (#7 for instance) is on top of one of the earthen dams and makes for a pretty unique and fun hole. Varied hole lengths, but overall very short and beginner friendly. Lots of putter ace runs available. Distances range from very short 100 foot ace run Par 3's to the longest hole around 475 feet Par 4. Definitely targeted at the casual player but just enough fun and challenge for the Rec and Intermediate crowd.

Cons:

UPKEEP: The walking trail and open portions of the course are fine and what you would expect from normal park upkeep. The sides of the fairway, underbrush, and course itself are not up to par with what you would expect. This lack of upkeep forces you to land in narrow, open, perfect landing zones which defeats the purpose of it being a casual/beginner style course. To be fair, this course may not always be like this, and it had rained on and off basically every day for the prior two weeks and probably impossible to mow.

TEES: Pretty bad here as they were probably once very nice, but they are pitted, hold water, slippery, and on the longer holes simply too small for a decent run-up. And most have high grass around them just adding to the abandoned feeling.

LOST DISC POTENTIAL: Even with the two of us spotting for each other, the tall grass and weeds and underbrush on the sides of the fairways tried multiple times to eat our plastic, even well thrown shots that had ground play to one side or the other would sneak into the rough and prove hard to find.

SAFETY: Walkers are spread out pretty consistently. A lot of the holes plays down fairways that are pretty much the walking trails. Some blind shots mean you have to make extra sure the paths are clear before you throw.

BUGS: Due to the swampy wet conditions after several weeks of rain, the mosquitoes were out in full force.

POTENTIAL DAMAGE TO DISCS: Most of the intended landing zones are rock and gravel filled. If you throw base plastic discs, expect some chunks to likely get taken out.

MUD: Course held a lot of water, especially since the course flows around walking trails and it had rained a lot the prior days.

Other Thoughts:

This course was a major disappointment after playing some other solid 9 holers in the area. I can understand courses not being well maintained, as it happens often due to funding, volunteers, and weather related issues. But even if this course was groomed immaculately, it would still have its problems. This was one of those courses while playing I couldn't wait to complete and be finished with. This course is hurt by lack of effort to maintain and or improve it. Unless you live nearby and this is your only option to play, or you are trying to bag them all, I wouldn't waste my time coming here. Maybe once the conditions improve or someone takes an interest in reviving the course (possible redesign) this course could be worth it, as the park is beautiful.
