Now Makes for a Tough 18

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 13, 2024 Played the course:once

Pros:

`
Heavily wooded course with some amount of elevation change on just about every hole. Older Prodigy baskets on the original (front) nine and DisCatcher on the new (back) nine. Tees are sturdy and large rubber on raised beds with timber frames. Brooms on many tees. Signage is excellent, and navigation is pretty intuitive on the front nine, with lots of directional arrows to the long and short tees on the back nine.

Alvord is an excellent "intermediate and above" challenge. There are several short tees on the front nine, mostly to reduce the length of uphill holes. There are short tees on almost all of the new back nine, and the long tees will put both length and accuracy to the test (Hole #11 plays almost 800' from the back tee. It's a par 5, but it's almost entirely uphill. Not for the faint of heart).

Marked OB tightens up some of the "easier" looking holes, and there's water to contend with, from a stream cutting through part of the front nine, and an OB swamp next to the fairway on #10

Good mix of right-to-left and left-to-right shapes. No bad holes, no dull stretches, and a couple of standouts:

+ Hole #6 is 272' uphill, with marked OB left and a deep OB ravine and stream on the right. The narrow, bolder strewn fairway is dotted with trees. And birdie run is going to flirt with OB. What a great hole.

+ Hole # 12 is a spectacular left turning dogleg across a gully with some water, and up to a tucked basket on a rise. By the time you get to this part of the back nine, you might be reminded of iconic wooded hilly courses like Brewster Ridge. They are that good, and will be on that level once they get beaten in some (BTW, a spotter would help on the dogleg hole #12).

Cons:

`
- The fairways on the new back nine are pretty rough. Lots of rocks make finding a stance difficult and runups often impossible. A lot more rugged than the original front nine. The designs of the holes are very fair, but it's no "walk in the park."

- Play at Alvord features a lot of tight wooded gaps, sometimes complicated by elevation change, but almost all of them very fair. The only questionable ones are playing from the short tee on #10, 240' through a downhill gap that might be as narrow as 12' at the tightest point. Hole #16 is a bit longer, and the gap is a bit farther from the tee - removing just one or two trees would make the hole play a bit fairer

Other Thoughts:

`
~ The back nine has a few climbs that could leave you panting. Some of the hilly fairways hold water in sections, and you might get pretty muddy. Very rocky ground and lots of elevation (especially on the back nine). Not cart-friendly.

~ Plenty of parking in two lots, though the lower one seems to be closed seasonally. Long walk to the first tee and from the 18th basket if you park in the upper lot.

~ I realize this is entirely personal, but it bugged me that some of the back nine tee maps are "upside down" (that is, the tee is at the top and the basket is at the bottom).

~ If you're up for the physical challenge of the hilly and rocky back nine, Alvord is a phenomenal course, at least a 4.5. You've got to take into account how rugged it is, but the variety of the required shots, the cleverness of the design, the great tees, the beauty of the New England woods add up to a great experience. If you're planning a trip to Norbrook Farm Brewery for the beer (very good) and disc golf (less so), do yourself a favor and make time to play Alvord Park.

Pros:

A lost disc cage with lock that is maintained and volunteers that will help you get your disc back. Technical lines, many holes have more than one possible line, Tee pads with a rubber mat top, very nice. Conveniently located of route 8. Large soccer field next to hole 1's tee pad so you can warm up or practice long drives.

Cons:

if you throw out of fairway on 1 and 8 you may end up in tall grass.
Trees, you may hit a few. No short tee pads built yet for front 9, they are marked, where applicable.

Other Thoughts:

Work (all volunteer) is underway building the back 9. Hole 10,16, 17, and 18 have baskets and are playable! No tee pads yet though.
we have a FB volunteer page if interested in helping the sport grow.
