Pros:
1) Red and blue painted sticks show the two sets of tees.
2) Nice Discatchers. They seemed to just be portable bolted to keep them safe. Perhaps they started with portable and would set them out and take them in and then decided to leave the course up permanently.
3) There are #'d flags hanging from the rungs of the basket to help identify which target you are throwing at. It may be hard to see the number if they are blowing, but the flag is always on the front of the basket as you stand on the tee so that should help.
4) I have never had to avoid a graveyard as an obstacle . . . until now . . . unique idea throwing over the corner of a fence bordering the graveyard. I am sure no-one wants to throw over the fence and have to retrieve their disc from beside a gravestone.
5) A slight amount of elevation change on a couple of holes. It is mostly due to playing around a massive retention area and some of the baskets are perched on the edge of this area. It isn't so much that the elevation is great, it is that it alters your throw slightly.
6) The layout was easy to follow because of the posts indicating each tee area. It was intuitive getting from hole to hole also.
7) Distance variation was pretty good. There is not much that can be done on a school property but they mixed in 100's, 200's and 300's fairly well.
8) Beginner friendly, however it does not really show how great this sport is because there is not much to challenge people . . . except distance.
9) The marsh to the right of #2 is a nice design feature. You want to avoid the tall wetland plants for sure or you will end up taking a 4.
Cons:
1) There just are not enough trees on this course to make it that much fun.
2) This course is relatively flat, but they did use the small changes in elevation well as mentioned above, but overall 8' feet difference on a course is not enough.
3) Grass tees always leave a bit to be desired.
4) There is not enough difference between the red and blue tees . . . they are all the same shots just add on an additional 30-40' and have a long tee. There just are not enough obstacles to alter the shot at all.
5) No garbage cans, benches or any other amenity. I wouldn't expect a lot for a school course but it is worth mentioning so you know to pack it in and pack it out.
Other Thoughts:
While they did more things right than wrong here the course is only ok. It doesn't have enough challenge for me, but they utilized the best portions of the property in their design which I am thankful for. Perhaps planting some trees on the course would be in the budget for the future. That would make some of the boring wide open holes more fun to throw. All in all . . . a good effort and a good beginner course for the students. I just don't expect many people to go out of their way to play this one.
