A few good holes...

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Jun 10, 2023 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

-Good, clean city park-style course.
-Multiuse park with a popular fishing pond and restrooms.
-The newer baskets are great.
-Navigation is easy once you find the first hole. Look for the small bridge on the west side of the parking lot close to the tennis courts.
-Holes 6--10 are a lot of fun in the wooded portion of this course.
-Signature hole here is #9. It's a very tightly wooded fairway with a stream close to the basket.
-2 permanent baskets on Hole 10 along with 1 concrete tee and 1 rubber tee was a nice touch. It would be good to see more of this on some of the other holes.

Cons:

-The first 5 holes are out in the open and close to the roads that border the park/course.
-Holes 11 and 12 feel like filler holes that wrap around the baseball diamond to add some length and/or just to get you back to the parking lot.
-Some of the signs include distances, so it would be ideal to use a pic of the course map from Hole 1 for reference.
-Teepads aren't great. Most of them are too short.
-100% flat, no elevation here.

Other Thoughts:

Bevier Park DGC used to be a challenging 21 hole course that was a lot more fun prior to the 2018 redesign. The current map next to Hole 1 is nice but they list about half of the holes as Par 4. I don't really think any hole should be considered a 4 here.

-Hole 2 used to have a huge tree in the middle of the fairway that is now gone. Now it's just a wide open 295' hole with the tennis courts on the left as the only obstacle. I'm sure the tree was removed for good reason, but it changed this hole from fun to boring.

-Bevier is still fun, but at the end of a round it doesn't have enough of the fun factor that makes you want to go back for another 12 holes.

-I'd probably skip this one on a road trip unless I was on a mission to bag all of the courses in the area.

-Plenty of room for improvement if the Park District ever decides to make some upgrades. With a few tweaks, this could easily be a 3.0 or 3.5 course.

Easy 9 hole 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 4, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Not to technical for beginners; holes 6 thru 10 are wooded so bring mosquito spray!

Well maintained and open, nice park with path and athletic field in the center.

Love stopping by on my home from work to play a quick 9 or 12 depending on time.

Cons:

Minor detail on hole 9, has make shift bridge crossing small creek, which looks like it could tip over at any given point.

Other Thoughts:

Perfect for beginners to practice tee off and fairway drives and playing around trees.

Busted up Bevier 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Oct 25, 2018 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

Bevier Park is located on the North side of Waukegan near the Airport. If you know anything about Waukegan Park District they take care of their parks as well as any in the nation. Typically all their parks are very clean and mowed. The first 5 holes start out with a more park feel then holes 6 through10 play in woods. Holes 11 and 12 finish in a more open area. This park is super flat and a very easy walk. This course was reduced from 21 holes to 12 after a walking path/bridge was built.

Tee signs mark all 12 holes.

Hole 9 is still one of the best holes in Lake County. Super tight line and a very rewarding birdie 2 if you can get it.

It's fairly easy to navigate.

Cons:

There are 3 different types of tee pads. Concrete, rubber, and crushed limestone. The concrete tee pads are perfect. The other tees suck!

The baskets are ok but the park district totally dropped the ball with this. With a total redesign and update of tees and baskets there was plenty of good land to make this a really good 9 hole course.

After the Forest Preare older baskets and not up to par with current standard baskets. Some are smaller old baskets. Some are Mach 2's. Some have numbers on them while others do not.

Pretty basic shorter course for the most part. Quite a few trees were lost on holes 2, 4, & 5 making them even easier than they used to be.

Multi use park. Watch for pedestrians.

Other Thoughts:

Here is my frustration of the current Bevier Course. The Waukegan Park District has plenty of resources. After the Lake County Forest Preserve destroyed the 21 hole layout they did nothing to help the disc golf course. Didn't update the tee signs, didn't install concrete tee pads, and didn't update the baskets. The county got right of way under the power lines so why not the park for disc golf holes? The parserve installed the path it opened up traffic from the back side of the park. Brought in more vandalism than I've seen the past 15 years.

Losing one of the 18+ hole course hurts especially when there are only 2 others in Lake County.

Bevier 12 hole course 2018 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Sep 3, 2018 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Course is a mix of park, woods and open holes. Two holes have two baskets. There are tee pads, signs, and baskets on every hole.

Hole 9 is probably the signature hole on the course, it is by far the best hole on the course. It's a 280 foot tunnel shot that goes over a small stream near the basket. I believe that this was hole 16 on the old layout.

Holes 7 and 8 are also nice wooded holes.

Next tee arrows on the bottom of the baskets. Not really needed on most of the holes but they are helpful on holes 6-9.

Cons:

Many of the baskets are showing their age. Some of them could be 20 years old.

If I remember right only 8 of the holes have concrete tee pads. Then there are 3 crushed limestone tee pads and a rubber tee pad. The rubber tee pad was not in the best shape either.

Most of the holes are between 250' and 300'. So there isn't much variety in distance here. The longest hole is only 310'.

Other Thoughts:

Calling this a redesign is a little bit of a stretch. I believe 6 of the 12 holes are from the old course, 1-5 and 9(old 16.) If you played the last layout you have a pretty good idea of what to expect, the main difference is that you no longer cross the road to play the 6 holes in the prairie. For me removing the prairie holes doesn't really hurt the course that much.

The renovation was fairly recent so the course still has some unfinished areas. Holes 6-7-8 and 10 could all use some more clean up and grooming.

There is at least one old concrete tee pad that isn't being used. If they could bring in some equipment they could probably drag it over to hole 8 to replace the rubber tee pad. They would only have to drag it ~100 feet.

The two holes with two baskets are kind of confusing, I didn't know which basket to throw to. I just played them twice to play each basket.

For a rating I am going to go with a 2.5. I almost gave it a 2.0 but I was feeling generous. This isn't a course I would go out of my way to play. But it isn't too hard to add this course to your trip since it is only a few miles off the main highways. For the course baggers this is an easy bag. The layout is easy to follow with plenty of signs to help get you through the course quickly.
