Big Bull Creek boasts a variety of open and wooded holes, and has all the standard amenities one might expect - practice basket, good maintenance, tees, signs, and baskets. There's not an abundance of parking, but it's good enough.

This course uses elevation really well. While I'll complain about the open holes later, they do have some elevation going on that at least gives them a little variety. Holes 8 and 9 have slightly elevated tees, which means you don't have to throw something super hard or fast, to get all the way to the green, but there are some tight gaps to hit if you want the birdie. Hole 15 is also elevated, but this time with more open space for a longer drive, and a lot of different upshots if you don't get to the green in one.

The uphill holes are sometimes pretty good too. Hole 3 is wide open but has a raised pin, hole 13 has a few options to get to the green, though being parked on a drive or upshot is fairly difficult, and hole 10 has a really tough landing zone if you're playing to the par 4 position.

Some of the holes that are somewhat wooded, but not completely technical, are fun as well. Hole 5 has two baskets, and the spicy long pin in the par 4 has a really tough second shot, and a mistake will make for some serious scramble situations. On hole 8, a low laser beam with a slow disc will get to the basket easily - though not everyone can do that, which makes it a good hole.

The open holes, which are the first four and last two holes on this course, are almost completely pointless. They're just in the open, with nothing but wind and tall grass to get in your way. Even the small pine trees that are on holes 1 and 2 are deliberately placed... off the fairway - why? To make the course a little more scenic to have a "tree-lined" fairway? Maybe, but it means the open holes have almost nothing interesting about them. Some have long walks between them, too.

A few wooded holes aren't much better. Hole 6 is just straight uphill with hardly any real challenge and will put a lot of beginners on the struggle bus. 12 has a weird shape, being uphill off the tee, but flat after, and 7 and 11 are also just mediocre holes.

The creek hardly comes into play at all. Hole 10 is the only time it is a real factor, and on several others, the only way to lose a disc is to have a really unlucky tree hit, or a roll down a hill, or not being able to see the creek from the tee, or something like that. In my opinion, that is how not to use water, since it doesn't add anything to the challenge while annoying a few people. Mud is also an issue, I hear.

With the exception of holes 5 and 10, I'm not a fan of a lot of the par 4's here. They all have shorter par 3 pins, but extending the hole doesn't add anything whatsoever on a lot of them; there's not a landing zone to hit, or a skill on the second shot that isn't required on the first shot - just two bombs in the open in most cases. 16 is okay but feels like a better design is possible.

So if this course fails at being an open course, but also fails at being a technical course, what does this place really offer? Well, I think it's still pretty good because it has a few excellent holes and a lot of variety. It starts poor and ends poor, but there's enough to keep it interesting that you won't get bored.

This course feels like it was trying to get the vibe of a golf course, with a lot of open holes, only a few truly technical holes, a little water, and some fairly long holes. However, I think this course fails at putting that combination together in a fun, challenging way. If you want to play on a golf course, there's on 12 minutes away (though I don't recommend that one either).

There's room in the woods around holes 12 and 13 that could theoretically support more holes, even without an additional crossing over the creek. And even though I like hole 15, having some north-south holes in the 14-16 area would probably be a better use of land than what we currently have. Really, anything to take a few holes away from the open would make this course better.

The blue Veteran baskets stand out well, and the practice basket has plenty of room around it.

Tee signs are great, they have a lot of information and they point you to the next hole, and navigation is incredibly easy as the paths are cut through the taller stuff from one basket to the next tee.

Benches on holes 5 and 10.

There's enough elevation to go around. The double drop on 9 was probably my favorite use of it, but hole 5-7 and 12-16 have awesome elements. 5-16 are the good part of this course.

I like the challenging drive on 7 as pretty much the entire fairway is sloped to the left. A backhand might skip into the trees, a forehand might get up and roll into them.

Hole 5 had a basket at both pin spots, and the long pin presented a big challenge with the pin down a steep hill about 350 feet down the fairway, and a large pine halfway down that hill blocking a direct second shot at the pin.

The unique tee positions on 8, 12, 13, and 16 make some very challenging holes where there could have been some real duds. Especially hole 13!

About those real duds... the golf course holes. 1-4, 14, and 17-18 are pretty sad. They're not bad holes since there is rough on each side of the hole and some minor elevation differences, but not enough to keep them from seeming very similar (17's short pin is tucked behind a tree trunk, but still not very challenging). 3 does have a raised basket which helps. I don't mind a few wide open, flat holes, but 7 is a few too many.

MUD. EVERYWHERE. The last precipitation was 3 days ago, and tons and tons of spots were still squishy. It started at the practice basket, in front of every single tee pad, the paths between baskets, hole 3 before the raised area, the hills on 5 and 6, random spots in the fairway on 8, 10, 12, 13, and 17... it was bad. Needs a ton of grass seed to improve this.

On my trip here on Feb 26, every single basket was in the shorter pin besides 9 and 13. I assume this was done for the winter, but still a little disappointing.

For being called Big Bull Creek... you're only forced to throw across the creek once, and that's only if hole 10 is in the long pin.

I have very few complaints about this course. If the mud gets remedied and a few trees are added to the wide open holes this has the potential to be a 4, but nothing more. There's a huge missed opportunity with the creek and some of the shapes it makes. Could have had one or two tougher water holes while still keeping the risk of losing a disc low.

You park in the park police lot. I didn't realize this and drove a mile past it before heading back.

This isn't a must-play course, but if you get bored of the options closer to KC this is a great alternative with some unique tee spots and greens.

This is a state-of-the-art disc golf course; it's not championship-caliber but still excellent. There are concrete tees, brand new, permanent signage (which shows pars, distances, pin positions, and the next tee), durable benches at the tees of holes 5, 10, & 14, and blue Dynamic Veteran baskets. There is a practice basket as well as two baskets on hole 5. There is a dedicated disc golf parking lot (right next to the practice basket, hole 1, and hole 18), indoor restrooms, and indoor water fountains (as well as some tourist brochures). The first several holes and last several holes are cut out of the tall-grass (the holes in-between are moderately wooded, presenting a good mix of open and wooded). The fairways on those holes are probably about 100 ft wide, so it shouldn't be a problem to keep your drive in the fairway. Several holes either tee downhill or a have a rise either just past the tee or in front of the basket (hole 13). There is a good mix of left/straight/right holes. There are several interesting greens, be it the raised island on 3, the creek behind 10's basket, or the ridge that holds 13's pin. There are some excellent, sturdy stairs linking 10 & 11 and 13's fairway & green. Navigation is pretty logical with paths cut out of the tall-grass and also marked on the tee signs. There are also a couple extra paths cut out that allow you to skip a few holes if you get stuck behind a large group.

The rough can be EXTREMELY difficult to find discs in (I stand by my statement that staying in the fairway shouldn't be a problem. Yet drives will end up in the rough at some point or another). The course can get pretty muddy in the winter or after big spring rains (especially from holes 6-16). The tees for 6 and 12 are pretty low, and it's not uncommon for them to be underwater or covered in mud after big rains. There's a low-hanging branch that gets in my face (I'm 6 ft tall) over 10's tee). The walk up hole 6's fairway or down 9's fairway can be fairly treacherous, especially when muddy. That plus the two flights of stairs present the biggest difficulty for carts on the course. I have seen snakes out here before, so if you're not a big snake fan, just keep your eyes open.

It is possible (but not probable) to lose a disc in the creek on holes 7 & 9-11. Judging from the tee sign, hole 10 is going to get a new pin placement which will be for a par 4. I think you will want to layup at the current basket and then cross the creek from there once it is finished. Most holes have two placements, and they are moved around fairly often to spice things up a bit. New trees have been planted behind a couple tees so that there will be more shade there (it'll probably be 10 years, though). The course is a disc golf devoted area, so you don't have to worry about other park users, plus the maintenance is excellent. There are at least a couple trash cans, and I haven't noticed hardly any litter. The tees are marked as blue tees on this site, and I definitely agree that they are targeted mostly to advanced to intermediate players. This is not a super beginner friendly course.

Big Bull Creek is a fresh new course that made a good first impression for me. A practice basket next to the parking lot. Concrete tees and Dynamic baskets with shiny new chains on all 18 holes. Two pin positions on many holes. Temporary signs that give the distance and par for each pin location, and mark the transitions from one hole to the next. Layout is very easy to follow and is pretty well laid out. The maintenance building has very nice restrooms.

The first three holes and the last two are very open and flat. Word around town says that trees are going to be transplanted to add a little more definition in the future. Hole 3 does have an "island green" that is encircled with boulders and filled in to raise the pin 18 inches or so.

Things get a lot more interesting around hole 5 and 6. If hole 5 is in the short position it's ok, but the long pin tacks on a nice downhill run toward the river. Hole 6 is not long, but plays back up the hill with a steep climb. A few trees and bushes standing near the top create windows and limit the approach options.

Hole 7 has pretty heavy rough to the left, on the low side. The right has enough trees to require a drive to be pretty much down the center with some zing if you want to get close. Hole 8 is slightly down hill, and two clusters of trees stand on either side of the center gap. You can also take the right side with a RHBH hyzer and skip it up to the basket. Hole 9 is a cool mid range with a significant drop in elevation. There is a line of trees in front of the flat at the bottom, and the river lurking to the left side. Get big skips or a bad bounce and it may end with a splash.

Hole 10 is also reachable with a mid or putter, over flat ground. There are tree branches making somewhat of a low ceiling above the fairway, and the river is running along the left side and bends to the right about 30 feet behind the pin. Nice risk reward birdie opportunity. 11 is along the crest of a ridge that is lined with thick rough on the right. The pin is a bit to the left of center, planted on enough of a slope to let a downhill putt fly well past, or catch an edge and roll away. 12 isn't exactly flat or wide open, but it's close. A decent drive will likely lead to par at worst.

13 is a longish left to right drive around a group of fairly dense trees. There is a bit of a rise in front of the pin, and a short flight of stairs on the right. The ridge line has trees leaving a couple of gaps to choose leading to the flat at the top. 14 is very open, but takes a big arm to put a drive near the pin. 15 has some downhill to it and a couple of small trees in the fairway. 16 takes you back up the slope, and is framed beautifully along the fairway by nice trees and bushes on either side of the fairway.

17 has one big old tree right in front of the basket, but otherwise distance and possibly wind are the only other obstacles. 18 is one last open bomber taking you back to the parking lot.

The recent construction left some soft earth and muddy areas. My shoes were fairly caked after a few holes, but the fairway grass was mostly in good shape. From the pics posted here a couple of months ago, it looks like everything is filling in nicely.

No trashcans on the premises.

I think Big Bull Creek is a fun course. There is enough variety in the layout to utilize different types of shots. A good amount of elevation change that is used nicely. The water comes into play a couple of times, and there are enough trees to keep it interesting without being too difficult for most players. If you blended Heritage and Birdland into one course, it might look sort of like this.

Several of the holes are mostly open and flat, but more than half are good holes. There may be improvements made with further landscaping. Permanent signage is possibly in the works also.

If you are counting on google maps to get you there, use the address on the course page or type in Big Bull Creek disc golf course. Otherwise you may be taken to another part of the park that is far from the course.

I played doubles on my first round at this course. My partner and I were one over par, with 2 birdies and 3 bogies. The winning pair was one under. They had a nice run of birdies from hole 7 through 10 to get the lead and stayed there to the end. The layout we played was par 55, but if all of the pins are in the long layout it may add another stroke or two.

Good elevation changes, some wide open shots cans also some more technical shots. Ability for multiple pin placement. Overall fun course.

Tee pads are a bit odd. Benches and permanent signage are not in yet. It's a new course, so that is expected.

Fun, new course with definite growth potential.

Fun layout with decent elevation change with new baskets, new concrete Tee Pads in a new park area. Great recreational play course. Good temporary signage and directional signs to next tee pads. Another great course for the KC Area.

Because it is so New there are not permanent signs and markers and the ground is still soft from construction. Can be a bit dangerous in spots if still wet.
