I spent a weekend at the YMCA for a Faith for Fathers Men of Steel Father/Son retreat. The facilities there are nestled into the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. We had a weekend packed full of activities that I was able to share with my oldest son, and I really looked forward to playing this course when the retreat was over before we left.

This is a private course that can only be played by guests. I went to the front desk and picked up a free scorecard that had a map (you will need a map). There is a bit of walking to get to hole 1, and then a bit more to get to 2.

Most tees are marked by large stones with white circle tee signs on the stones that show a flight path and distance. Most tees are natural surface outlined by landscape timbers that are almost completely rotted away in most cases.

Most holes can be reached with a normal RHBH hyzer approach, but there are a few left to right shots as well. However the ones that are left to right can be reached with a straight shot combined with a make-able putt.

Navigation between tee boxes was difficult even with a map. The map is not pinpoint in showing where all tees are. It takes a little hunting to find some.

I believe hole 4 was the only one that was of any significant length. The rest were VERY short in some cases. Hole 7's pin was missing, So we had to skip it. Every other basket was in great shape.

All in all, this was a decent course for beginners, but I believe beginners would find the navigation even more frustrating than I did. There is nothing here that would make this a destination course for any serious disc golfers. But, if you are staying there for the weekend, you might as well go play it because it is still disc golf!

Nice little course at the Black Mountain YMCA. They loan discs out to people who want to play in the Lobby. Course plays down one side of the property exit road and then back up the other side. Tee boxes are dirt but framed in and protected with landscape cloth. Teesigns very nice, helpful and show distance and hole shape. Baskets are pretty blue Discatchers. The road is not busy and creates some risk. Some of the shots are interesting and there isnt much brush to lose discs in. There are some very pretty throws and views of the property. 2 of the holes play around a little pond/creek. There are a few technical shots but most are open. An appropriate course for the casual player there for a conference. Baskets are in great shape and teepads are good for being dirt. The water holes, while short, add to the course.

Very short. A few of the holes are under 100'. There are some opportunities for a full pull but mostly you are just throwing a putter at the basket. Near the end there is a stretch where you just throw across an athletic field, then walk through woods to another field and do the same thing. There are few wooded holes except the road holes. There are pleny of old mature trees there. No cans or benches, but I didnt notice any trash. The course is private and only for people staying at the resort.

We noticed the baskets as we drove up the main drive. What a suprise. It was fun to get out between conference sessions and play 18 holes in under 1.5 hours. I enjoyed the course and it was well done for what it is. There is so much good land that the course leaves you wishing an actual course designer had the ability to use the woods and terrain. If you are staying at the Black Mountain YMCA bring your discs and play this course! Tehre is plenty of room on a good number of holes to create your own long hole. You could almost get this to a real course if you play it once and understand where the baskets are. If I stayed here a few days, I would make myself a difficult layout where you really can air out a few discs. On maybe 4-5 holes there is plenty of space for this.
