Pros:
This is how you should construct a disc golf from scratch. That is, by having the funds to build a first class disc golf course. The tee pads are level on a green carpet. I didn't ask whether concrete is in the plans. At hole # 1 the bench is varnished! There are bag holders and benches at every hole. The tee signs are currently temporary but beautiful new ones are coming soon. The baskets are lovely, orange Prodigy models. There are some next tee signs where needed.
The first two holes play in a narrow area between the lake and the neighboring houses. Then starting with # 3, you play back into a partially wooded area. The course is not terribly long with four holes playing over 400'. But it is borderline tight in places and does have a few tricky, dangerous basket placements, where lurking just behind the basket is a nasty deep ditch just waiting on your unsuspecting disc. Twice, I just barely overthrew the basket and then found my disc either in the water or way down the embankment.
Members of my playing group really liked # 16 as a signature hole. It's 465' down kind of an S turn fairway and the basket is not visible until partway down the fairway.
I preferred # 14 with it's basket set up amongst the large boulders. It's shorter and easier than 16.
Cons:
There aren't many cons to mention except for the one big one. There is just over a 1/4 mile trek to the first tee and when you finish # 18, getting back is even longer yet. That would be a long trek after a sizzling July round here.
On the wonderful basket position in the boulders on # 14 there are some scraggly little bushes sticking up as well as some poison oak. I would like to see these are cut or pulled.
Some benches aren't finished but heck, the course won't have its official opening until next Saturday with it's first tournament the day after.
Other Thoughts:
I was fortunate enough to hook up with locals Brie, Jerome and Garret, who were all playing their inaugural round at Cameron. We were all pleased with the design, the challenge and basically, everything about the course. Congratulations to Jason and the rest of the local club for getting this course built.
I vacillated back and forth about my rating for Cameron DGC, 3.0 or 3.5. After playing through most of the course, I was leaning to the higher number but after taking the long walk back to my car, I reluctantly decided on the 3.0 rating. I think I might be a little low and bet this ends up being rated closer to 4.0 then my 3.0.
