Pros:

WHAT TO EXPECT: The Camp Loucon Disc Golf Course is located on the massive property of Camp Loucon near Leitchfield, KY. This camp is primarily used for Church Camp sessions that make the course unavailable for the months of June through July. Expect a large combination of moderately wooded to wide open holes, shorter one angle technical holes and choose your line open bombers. The course winds its way through the main administrative buildings and "front lawn" to begin, while managing to utilize all the wooded areas at its disposal. The course then stretches its legs on the back 9 and opens up bringing in much longer holes, elevation changes, and risky pin locations as the course maneuvers around cabins, pool, canteen, and worship areas. This property is gorgeous, but the infrastructure is aging. Big shout out to the owners of the property and the volunteers that keep this camp going, and for adding a disc golf course that we can all enjoy.

AMENITIES: This full service camp has modern bathrooms, a rec room, dining facility, pool, a giant water slide, basketball courts, etc all on site. Depending on time of the year, some or all of these may not be available.

TEES/SIGNAGE/BASKETS (PROS): Concrete tee pads exist... Signage is simple, brown post with hole number and distance, Baskets are the real standout here from the other two, brand new Innova Discatchers. There was no course Kiosk sign, but I'm told better signage is coming in the future.

DESIGN: As this was likely created and designed by a passionate group of camp volunteers with little knowledge of disc golf I will not be harsh to their design. Most holes are straight, Par 3's in the 230-250 range, on the front 9 with a sub 400 foot par 4 mixed in. The front 9 is moderately wooded and consists almost entirely of flat, low ceiling, straight gap hitting shots. The back 9 adds swings of elevation and MUCH longer holes. The wooded holes stay consistent with the front 9, 230-250 in length but add elevation and trickier pin locations. The open holes however stretch the distance and the open par 3's are more in the 475-425 range with elevation. While I applaud the wide variety of shots needed to score well here, the drastic change in difficulty makes the front 9 feel like a beginner course and the back 9 feel like a separate intermediate/advanced course. Two completed separate 9's.

SIGNATURES: There are multiple fun ace runs on the front 9. The holes are visually pretty, there are just enough trees guarding them to make the shot shape required difficult, and misses can get punished. The signature hole is probably Hole #17, a massive downhill wide open bomber in the 425 foot range that plays over a wide open field down into a heavily wooded Pine Grove to a very protected sloped green. With the pool facilities to the left and and OB road long, getting your disc to this green is a task, and making it stick, is even trickier. The view is gorgeous as well.

Cons:

TEE PADS: The tees are pretty abysmal. They are way too small and were obviously not professionally poured. They are uneven and difficult to throw from.

UPKEEP: This course and property are a lot to maintain do to its sheer size. While the main fairways and facilities portion of the course is mostly kept immaculate, the underbrush that lines the perimeter holes is seriously thick. When I played, their tractor that pulls their mower had broken down the day prior and half the course was in desperate need of mowing. This can happen to anyone, but it still made it less of a good experience.

MISSED OPPORTUNITY: The property is massive and contains some very dense woods, hiking trails, and lake access. This course could have been next level had the course designers utilized the lake side property and forest trails beside it.

URBAN FEEL: Despite it being a well kept facility, playing in the off season when the camp isn't full of people gives off serious abandoned campsite vibes. You are throwing near and around buildings, roads, sports fields and courts, equipment, etc and it just has an erie feeling to it. I often felt like I was going to grip lock and break a window.

DESIGN: As I mentioned above, this course was not designed or installed by a professional. While some of the holes are actually really good, the course pars are all over the place, and some of the lines required are asking a lot of amateur disc golfers. While certainly not bad, you can tell that this course lacks a lot of what it potentially could have provided. The shots variety is very limited.

MINOR CONS: No pets allowed, seasonal (call ahead), bring bug spray.

Other Thoughts:

Playing this course put me into a time machine (I went to church camp here many years ago as a teen, and volunteered my summers there as a camp counselor while in college, and even worked security many times for the massive Christian Rock Festival "New Song" that was held on the grounds every year). I hadn't been back in 20 some odd years and it was both exciting and sad. The property is worth the trip to see, the owners and volunteers are some of the nicest and most passionate people you'll meet and open to suggestions to improve. This course is off the beaten path, but if you are traveling down the old Blue Grass Parkway getting that disc golf itch somewhere between Elizabethtown and Bowling Green, pull off on exit 107 and head down to Camp Loucon and let em fly. Not the greatest course in the world, but a true labor of love.
