It's Fun to Disc at the: L- R- C- A!!!! 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 23, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Set at the back of a large property that hosts Christian retreats/summer camps, LRCA was completely abandoned with not a soul in sight during our round, adding a bit of eeriness to an otherwise solid 9-hole course. The course starts at the kiosk right after the "Child Safety Zone" sign. We didn't see parking at first, so we continued until the last lot and started on #4.
- LRCA has a really nice mix of holes. Mostly open, with tall prairie grass off the fairways, the designers still managed to force some really tasty shots using the available trees, elevation, and (on #7) water. The tall grass is annoying but not thick enough where losing a disc is a constant threat.
- A shoot-the-gap through the trees shot on #9 makes you think an overhand shot is the way to go...until you see the animal pen (replete with goats, sheep, and a bull) not too far to the right of the pin. It's doable but makes you really think about it.
- #1 is a big fun spike hyzer over some trees.
- Despite the tall prairie grass off the fairways, the rest of the course was manicured to perfection.

Cons:

- Slick rubber tee pads are really pretty slippery even when dry. Grass clippings on the pads can make it worse, so beware.
- Navigation is a bit of an issue, especially from #5 to #6. Hang a left down the road after holing out on #5, turn to the right at the first path and look for the hanging bucket (which is, incidentally, also the tee sign post). The angle makes it difficult to see, just keep walking.
-I'd have liked to see the basket for #7 a bit closer to the water to create a "faster," more aggressive green, but honestly the safer location away from the water is in keeping with the overall design as a camp course.

Other Thoughts:

- Pretty solid for a Chicagoland niner. I thought there was a really good mix of stuff going on here, considering the available land. I would NOT want to be within a country mile of this place if camp were in session, but definitely something I'd hit up on the regular if I lived nearby.
- Signage states: Child Safety Zone all visitors must check in. Being the rebels we are (and because we couldn't find the office in which to check in), we didn't check in. Something to be aware of if the camp is in use, though.
- Hole #7 has a "wind dam" aka windmill in the fairway. First time I've had to avoid a "wind dam" to make par.
