I don't understand this course.

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 11, 2023 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

- It is a nice facility.
- Offers a variety of shots.
- Nice touches such as bag hooks at the tee and the wood bridge on 2.
- Surprisingly challenging.
- Short and long baskets.

Cons:

Where do I start?
- Dangerous. Hole 1 you are directly throwing at the street. Hole 2 has a choice of streets to target. Hole 4 is the bomber hole with disc losing trouble to the left, so the safe play puts a busy dog park into play. Each time I've been here, I've seen people feet away from taking an errant disc to the dome.
- Navigation isn't necessarily intuitive. In the spirit of efficiency, I recommend starting on hole 2 and finishing on hole 1.
- No viable line on hole 2.
- Hole 5 is a long narrow low ceiling tunnel hole. The rough is filled with things that can physically injure you.
- The rough in general is borderline unplayable. I played this course when it opened in November '22 and thought it might "beat in". It has gotten worse.

Other Thoughts:

The local community was really excited to introduce disc golf to Clinton. And put together a 6 hole course that is both dangerous and not at all beginner friendly.

Bittersweet bite

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 15, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Carden Farm course offers a sampler-size experience of disc golf with six holes that are delicious in spots and disappointing in others.

The amenities are there, complete with turf teepads, a detailed course map and beautifully designed tee signs with renderings of the hole. Each hole features two Discatcher baskets with a short option (red) and a longer option (blue). A pavilion and picnic tables are nearby too.

The grassy lawns were recently mowed and in excellent condition when I played. The course receives a moderately wooded rating, and the sections of the course in the woods are a bit "rough and ready" but playable.

The course seems above average in appearance by offering good views of the Clinch River, lovely lawns and flowering trees just as spring is kicking off.

In just six holes, the course gets some variety in. The first hole is a downhill dogleg right, the second hole is through a small valley with a narrow gap, the third hole utilizes a tree to force a ceiling, the fourth hole is wide open, the fifth hole is a tougher, narrow gap through woods and brush, and the final hole prompts hitting an opening with accuracy.

Cons:

There are numerous annoyances in the design, at least more than I would expect from just six holes of disc golf.

Searching for the first teepad without a map betrays one's intuition. Even though I spotted the red- and blue-bannered baskets in the woods, I was walking the wrong direction until I consulted the map. The first teepad is near the park entrance, tucked into the woods at a high elevation on the right side of the road as you enter. Even though the course travels clockwise around the outskirts of the park, there's a couple hundred feet at least between each basket and the next teepad, so keep the map handy.

Parts of the course off the fairway are difficult. With the exception of Hole #4, which is wide open, encountering woods or the heavy brush might only provide the option of pitching out. My approach on Hole #5 long was 20 feet long, and I could barely get to my disc, let alone attempt to putt.

Par is 3 for all six short (red) baskets, which is quite challenging for the first two holes. The ideal drive on the opening hole, which is 385 feet, will carry over the road before finishing back to the right with a menacing hill and some sticky brambles on either side of the narrow gap. A three feels good here. On Hole #2, there's a very narrow, low-to-the-ground opening about 150 feet from the teepad. After that gap, the path goes back up a hill, through some brush, and into an opening on the other side. I bet I could empty my bag and not get a disc within 50 feet of the basket. The long baskets (blue) are about 100 feet longer on average, but with three par 4s, breaking par might be easier with the blue layout.

Other Thoughts:

The Carden Farm grounds offer an enormous dog park for your canine friends and the disc golf course is on the perimeter of the facility.

The six-hole layout offers some promise of really good design. Unfortunately, in its current state, the course has too many imperfections to merit a higher rating.
