Collins Park DGC is a great addition to the community!

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 1, 2024 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

*Very easily accessible by the White Oak Rail Trail or by driving
*TONS of available parking
*Great playground areas for kids
*Quieter park, not usually very crowded
*Disc Golf Baskets are still in great shape
*Concrete tee pads are still in new condition-great addition to the course
*Some holes are pretty tough, tight, and technical which I love
*Hole 4-amazing! Fantastic elevation change, love the tee pad, challenging hole
*Hole 6-beautiful open hole, I really love the open terrain on this hole, beautiful view of the park from the tee, it's a tough but fun shot
*Practice basket and also an ACE (hole in one) board which is a really unique and cool touch
*Picnic tables nearby all around the park
*The memorial benches are such a cool touch and nice to rest and relax on while playing, especially when we play multiple rounds and get tired
*Great community for disc golf here, we have met some other players who are very friendly
*Great use of signs at start of course and the tee display signs are accurate
*The paths between baskets are extremely worn in and easy to follow in my experiences
*The course website and facebook pages I have seen for this course are much more detailed and easier to navigate than many other courses in WV or just many other courses period (course maps are easy to find, don't have to search on multiple websites, google, and facebook pages taking forever looking for a course map if you have never played)

Cons:

*9 holes vs 18 holes but definitely understandable with the available space
*Getting from Hole 6 to Hole 7 could be a challenge if you have never played here before and didn't pay attention to any of the maps online or at the start of the course
*Area to right of Hole 2-be careful not to lose disc down this steep hill (susceptible to rolling discs)
*Area to right side of Holes 4 and 7 are also areas you want to avoid leaving the fairway, usually not an issue but just be careful.
*steep in areas and due to the challenging elevation shots of holes 4 and 5 particularly, the paths can become muddy and slightly slick after heavy rains (I feel like this is normal for most disc golf courses in WV though honestly)

Other Thoughts:

Fantastic 9 Hole disc golf course that has been great for this area! Significant maintenance has been done recently and it shows. We have met some hard working folks that help to maintain this course and some awesome people that play disc golf here. Other sign improvements are slated to be coming in the future here which is definitely very exciting. This course has definitely helped in some ways to ignite a growth of disc golf in the southern part of WV and after this public course was opened, a significant amount of new players are now playing the sport in southern WV and a significant amount of courses have now opened in southern WV.

Climb! Climb! Climb!

Reviewed: Played on:May 12, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- tremendous elevation change on many of the holes
- notable technical challenge on some of the wooded holes
- Innova DISCatcher baskets with yellow rims are generally visible and in good repair
- concrete tees
- good amenities such as practice basket, garbage cans, picnic tables, and benches
- some of the best uphill and downhill shots I've seen on a 9 hole course
- a few open holes if you like a mix of styles
- two 300-400 ft holes thrown in for some added distance
- no safety hazards, area mostly devoted to disc golf

Cons:

- very short which may be a con to some, though the intense elevation/technical challenge does make up for this
- rough is pretty bad in the woods at points
- could be too tough/strenuous for beginner players
- tee signs are very rudimentary and faded
- some navigation aids would be helpful, not completely intuitive
- course is pretty muddy and seems like a lot would be permanently wet
- very long walks between 5, 6, and 7
- hole 9 does not end close to the parking lot

Other Thoughts:

While I have a pretty long list of cons here, most of them are not of the "deal breaker" variety. Collins Park is a pretty darn cool 9er, especially if you like woods and tremendous elevation change (and I do). The baskets and tees are in good shape, although the tee signs could use updating. While the distances here probably seem to cater to beginners, and the course isn't especially difficult, the rough and the slopes mean you could get in a world of hurt with rollaways and hunting for discs. I could see this course being immensely frustrating or super cool. I enjoyed it on this day, but could see feeling the other way too.

Navigation definitely could use some help, as there are some long walks between holes that I never would have figured out without the map on DGCR. Hole 9 ending a ways from the parking lot is also not ideal. However, the course is fun, and relatively quick (probably 30-40 minutes solo). If you're in the New River Gorge area, this is a course worth playing. There are a variety of 9 hole courses scattered around, but I doubt most of them rival the elevation change here.

I don't have a ton more to say about this one - it's a taste of West Virginia topography, and is an average course - maybe a 2 for some people, but the terrain for me gave it the bump. I tend to like courses that emphasize shot placement over big arms, and that is definitely what you are getting here. Just stay on the fairway in the woods or you might leave some blood with the resident thorns.

2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 12, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Collins Park DGC plays mostly around the periphery of and occasionally through a small town park. The course is surprisingly technical given the modest surroundings, using the woods that surround the park to create some tight shots and well-guarded pins. Elevation is a significant factor on numerous holes, turning the tightly-laned tunnel shot on 4 into a challenging downhill drive and spicing up numerous approaches and putts through some hillside pin placements. 6 sports a raised tee that gives a different feel to an otherwise largely open drive. The terrain's features are thusly utilized well throughout the course in an effort that maximizes technical challenge despite the land's limitations. A few more open holes create an impressive mix of environments relative to the short 9-hole layout.

Hole distances feel somewhat more expansive and varied than how they look on paper owing to the aforementioned effective use of elevation.

The course is well-signed, helping greatly with navigation.

Cons:

In addition to the general limitations of a short-ish 9 hole course in a small town park, this course's technical leanings make for a bit of an odd mix: many holes are far too hard to be considered suitable for beginners, but the dense rough and occasionally awkward shots make many such holes less rewarding and more annoying for experienced players. Between the rough and some of the more drastic elevation changes, there's a real threat of losing a disc on a few holes. This can reasonably deter you from attempting otherwise interesting shots. It's a hard course to recommend for, say, breaking up a long drive when you could easily end up hunting for your disc.

The course and surrounding area is a touch rough around the edges.

Other Thoughts:

An interestingly technical short course that may or may not be worth a visit depending on how adverse you are to ending up hunting through some rough.

Great course to play 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 4, 2017 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

I have played this course many times and love it. There is a great variety with 6 wooded holes and 3 open holes. There is also a good variety of different kind of shots, this course has really helped me develop my game. To have a great score you must have a good hyzer, anhyzer or flick, and an overhead shot is helpful. There is a beautiful downhill shot on hole 4 which is my favorite hole. There is a tough uphill shot on hole 5. There is a short anhyzer mando on hole 3, and then there is a long open field on hole 6. Hole 7 is very difficult, long and narrow. The course is well maintained and the baskets and signage are nice. This course is also nice that it has actual tee pads and not just natural grass tees. There are a couple great fields near the start to practice your throws and do some field work. The practice basket is very nice and in a great area. The course map is very nice and the fact that the course has an Ace board and QR codes to scan for the map is very nice. This course has a great variety and is a fun course to play that will challenge your game and help you grow. I definitely recommend checking this course out.

Cons:

There are a few hills on this course that can be tiring sometimes. The course can get slick near the first couple of holes especially after it rains very hard so just be careful and watch for that and you will be fine. Be careful not to lose discs to the far left on hole 6 and to the far right on hole 8.

Oak Hill WV - Collins Park 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 26, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice public park in Oak Hill. Near a 6 mile rail to trail path. New equipment on a relatively new course.

Cons:

6 holes were in thick forests with 15 feet of twisting clearing. Not really a course to use your skills as much as random tree hitting.
