Climb! Climb! Climb!

Reviewed: Played on:May 12, 2023 Played the course:once

Pros:

- tremendous elevation change on many of the holes
- notable technical challenge on some of the wooded holes
- Innova DISCatcher baskets with yellow rims are generally visible and in good repair
- concrete tees
- good amenities such as practice basket, garbage cans, picnic tables, and benches
- some of the best uphill and downhill shots I've seen on a 9 hole course
- a few open holes if you like a mix of styles
- two 300-400 ft holes thrown in for some added distance
- no safety hazards, area mostly devoted to disc golf

Cons:

- very short which may be a con to some, though the intense elevation/technical challenge does make up for this
- rough is pretty bad in the woods at points
- could be too tough/strenuous for beginner players
- tee signs are very rudimentary and faded
- some navigation aids would be helpful, not completely intuitive
- course is pretty muddy and seems like a lot would be permanently wet
- very long walks between 5, 6, and 7
- hole 9 does not end close to the parking lot

Other Thoughts:

While I have a pretty long list of cons here, most of them are not of the "deal breaker" variety. Collins Park is a pretty darn cool 9er, especially if you like woods and tremendous elevation change (and I do). The baskets and tees are in good shape, although the tee signs could use updating. While the distances here probably seem to cater to beginners, and the course isn't especially difficult, the rough and the slopes mean you could get in a world of hurt with rollaways and hunting for discs. I could see this course being immensely frustrating or super cool. I enjoyed it on this day, but could see feeling the other way too.

Navigation definitely could use some help, as there are some long walks between holes that I never would have figured out without the map on DGCR. Hole 9 ending a ways from the parking lot is also not ideal. However, the course is fun, and relatively quick (probably 30-40 minutes solo). If you're in the New River Gorge area, this is a course worth playing. There are a variety of 9 hole courses scattered around, but I doubt most of them rival the elevation change here.

I don't have a ton more to say about this one - it's a taste of West Virginia topography, and is an average course - maybe a 2 for some people, but the terrain for me gave it the bump. I tend to like courses that emphasize shot placement over big arms, and that is definitely what you are getting here. Just stay on the fairway in the woods or you might leave some blood with the resident thorns.
