Pros:
Pulling into the parking lot and seeing some locals warming up on the putting basket to the left of the clubhouse , I knew I was in unusual , but a bit classier territory . I made the mistake of going up to the counter with 3 $1 bills in my hand , and had to walk back to the car to get 18 cents ( Yes , Bring $3.18 to the counter to cover the tax ) . The nice girl at the counter gave me a score card and pointed to the first tee box . The back of the course was closed off to the golfers ( Lucky ) and a group of locals let me start ahead of them . A fair amount of the tee boxes are elevated just like the ball golf boxes . Not all of the tee boxes had the big colored ball markers out , though , so you had a liberal amount of room to throw off the elevation from . the baskets are in good condition , the course is cut and well taken care of , Signage is pretty good , but read them closely . #1 is a basket that will fade right under a group of trees . The placement can be confusing because #7s basket is directly in front of you about 300' + . I was corrected by this group after I threw , then reteed up and threw again . #2 is straightaway Maybe a little over 300' , and #3 has a good pin position set in the corner of the course , somewhat close to the road you drove in on . The first 9 holes make a kind of counterclockwise , then back and forth move in the front half of the course . You will face few chances of hitting trees , and the only way you will lose a disc is if griplock a drive into a running creek on your right on 5 & 9 . A few trees on the course rarely make you think to shot shape around or under them , except maybe 18 , a short left to right that forces a right handed hyzer around some brush and hazard . The fist 9 holes will take you from easier and reachable midrange drives of 220+ to more hard driving 420' . A little bland and repetitive , but still that country club feel . Kind of fun . This is also possibly the only lightly rolling flat area in West Virginia , so your legs aren't taxed and worn out after a round . You now walk through the back porch of the clubhouse to the back 9 and #10 , which is to your right after you step off the porch. It warms you up with a 265' hole with a tree line on your right , but not really causing any alarm . #11 would be my signature hole , where you have to start it a little right to avoid the hill to your left and branches of a tree , and bring it in to the left . The basket is 342' away and a small creek runs in front of it , but you feel like you can reach it because you are throwing off a hill , one of only 2 on the course . Pretty cool . #12 comes back towards where you threw from to a basket perched up part of the hill . #13 is one of 2 real bombers on the course , a 965' par 5 , that you throw from off your 2nd hill , across a gully , back to a plain that was even with your tee pad . You won't be able to see the basket , which is almost straightaway from you , until your 2nd throw , unless you can really rip your drive . The basket sits sort of down in a lower shelf . The nice thing about this hole is that you are never in trouble , because you can't hit anything on your way to the basket . #14 is a 425' throw from the tees , which the back 9 have actual balls to show you where to tee from .The basket is placed in front of you with a nice drop off right behind it . Risk/reward . You have to share several of these tee pads like #13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 & 18 but the local ball golfers are for the most part very courteous and you can work your drives in with them . #15 is your last real long hole , a 640' bomb that you will not see until after your first throw . it sits pretty close to the edge of the park with a tree a little distance in front of it . The course will take you a while to play , especially when the course is loaded with ball golfers , but the well manicured grass under your shoes will give you a feel that the course does really care about both types of players out there . You never have to call for a tee time . Although you have to contend with ball golfers at the back tees , those are also where a lot of the benches are . The clubhouse has drinks and a bathroom . It is just a change of pace from the usual city park disc golf park .
Cons:
I don't think it is a big deal to me , but I like it when reviewers tell me how much the pay for play courses charge . $3.18 at the counter , which I feel is worth it . Some of the holes can seem a bit bland and repetitive , making you bring out the same midrange and driver over and over again . Other than the wind on this open course , there is very little to force you into shot shaping lines . If you are a pro or tournament tested am , you might be more worried about overshooting many of the baskets . Ball golfers . This will hold up your play on a weekend . Many of them will let you pass , but a few of them don't understand course courtesy , or want an audience . I sat behind a group of 4 that had a player that took a 15 on hole #18 . They refused to let me go ahead of them , and I was by MYSELF !!!!
Other Thoughts:
I am not sure if it is a must play , but it IS an experience . A well taken care of course is West Virginia that doesn't beat you up on hills . A course with a clubhouse and friendly staff . A course that lets you open up your arm and try your new drivers on some of the holes . Not a difficult course at all , and not one that will have memorable holes on it , but a great change of pace . Unless you are pro or tournament grade am , or a family just wanting to get together , throw and laugh , then this might not be the place for you . If you are someone looking to improve , someone wanting to try out your new discs , Friends or disc golf enthusiasts getting together as a group , or even a round to play by yourself to clear out the cobwebs , this course is for you . Drop by for a round . Play It !
