Good Course, will get better 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 24, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Good DISCatchers, great tee signs, practice basket and a great location in this nice park.
The tee signs are of very good quality and located at every tee.
Dual tees for added distance and challenge on most holes.
Holes that go left, right, uphill and downhill, about what you would expect for WV! Great use of the terrain, without any crazy climbs or downhill bombs where you could lose discs.
Shares the parking lot (and restrooms) with the tennis center, so mostly isolated from other parts of this park.
Several holes play underneath the 50 foot high towers that hold the landing lights for the next door Chuck Yeager Airport.

Cons:

Natural tees, were rather muddy and uneven the day I was there. Perhaps they are waiting for this new course to settle in.
A few holes play pretty close to a picnic area. But since this one is rather isolated, probably not a big problem.
A stretch in the back 9 (#13-#15) did not seem to have as clear a fairways as the other wooded holes. These were pretty tight.
No benches and few, if any trashcans, again probably due to the newness.

Other Thoughts:

Co-designed by Johnny Sias, 3 time World Champ, one of his many in this area. Makes good use of mostly unused space in this large park that also includes ball golf, driving range, swimming pool, soccer stadium, bandstage, tennis, horseshoes and a pond.
A couple of downhill holes were my favorites, #8 - fairly short with only a few trees that I almost aced! #12 - longer downhill with more trees and the OB road to the right.
I'm really surprised that with how active the local club is, there is no more info on this site for this course, no hole info, just a few photos and no course map.
It must be nice to have another quality course in the Kanawha valley, and in a different area from the others. With a little more work (tees, benches, etc) this could be a really good course.

Coonskin DGC - nothing like the movie 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 31, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Multiple tees with single position DisCatcher baskets. Decent tee signs, and fairly easy to navigate. Good use of the available terrain and elevation to mix up shots from hole to hole. Mostly short technical and wooded holes with a couple somewhat open holes to air out in between. Restrooms are in the middle of the course.

Cons:

I played the course still in it's infancy so some of these are probably issues that will be addressed. The natural tees here are the biggest issue. Some holes are a little rough still. Only one loop basically back to parking lot. Plays a little close to park roads and some other park activities, but probably not a big deal. I could see a disc going into the restrooms on #10 one day.

Other Thoughts:

The course is set in a nice county park just a few minutes from downtown that has plenty of other activities. If the course gets some kind of tee pads and breaks in a little more this might be one of the most played and versatile courses for everyone in the area. It has a good mix of par 3 technicality and fun. Hole 18 is a hoot to finish on.

Just a word of caution when trying to locate the park/course, when in doubt follow the directions on the front page here. My GPS kept wanting to take me through the airport roads that are closed by the military, and also took me to a dead end road. There is a (new?) bridge on the north side of the park that my GPS(s) did not know about.
