"No, no, no...this is beautiful, this is art!" 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 20, 2021 Played the course:once

Pros:

- Eighteen holes of seriously fun, moderately hilly/wooded disc golf, with a beginner-to-intermediate level design hitting on all cylinders. The property is choice for this brand of disc golf, and the designers should be commended for their take on it.
- Elevation used to utmost potential. Woods used to utmost potential. Got my heart racing in multiple spots on the course. From the long tees, holes # 3, 5, 12, 15, and 16 all provide some wow factor. Deadwood is a masterclass in all the things one can do to make compelling and exciting use of wooded elevation. Deuce- or- die holes mixed with tough tests; score well when the opportunity arises before the harder holes catch up with you. From the shorts, a much more digestible deuce-or-die layout still provides a solid mix of challenges for newer or younger players, as well as seasoned discers looking for aces or putter rounds.
- Great mix of hole length. The longer longs are true tests, while even some of the shortest shorts have legitimate blow-up hole potential. All the lines are there to be executed, one just has to hit them to score well. Punishment off the fairway is fair and commensurate with perhaps the exception of the grassy bog area off to the right on hole #18. Perhaps, the same could be said for hole #11's wooded/boggy rough.
- Natural vibe. A huge boulder (hole 7), cows huddling in the shade just off the fairway, baby raccoons, fungi, etc. This course is gorgeous, and unfortunately the course pictures do not do it justice. I would've updated but did not have my phone for the round. I thoroughly enjoyed my round out here, from a "looking at nature" aspect.
- Fast, fun greens: especially hole #15 but also #'s 2, 3, 11, 18 all have rollaway or blow-past potential. "Risk vs. Reward" is the name of the game out here when balancing between aggressive putting in order to score well and the fast greens' unforgiving terrain.
- Well-worn, obvious fairways and rough that's fair but not brutal. The worn-in look to the course gave it almost a ball golf sort of vibe (in the best possible way); in that, it felt professional and well-executed, with an established look.
- Red blue and silver baskets are easy to pick out with their bright colors. Benches, signs, concrete tees, and lidded trash cans throughout. A rope after 18's basket so you don't bust your ass going downhill.

Cons:

- Hiking paths intersect the course in a couple of places (especially #18).
- Concrete tee partially washed out with sand on one of the holes (#10, iirc?). A few of the wooded frames are deteriorating, which may necessitate future maintenance to prevent erosion around the tee pads. Otherwise, tees are nice level concrete and add greatly to the course.
- No signs on the short tees. A niggling issue.
- I wonder how the flies are out here during the midst of summer, what with the cows immediately adjacent and the boggy/wooded land. Seems an ideal deer & horsefly breeding ground...

Other Thoughts:

- $4 out-of-county day passes; $20/year is a steal of a deal. Free in-co.
- Camping, lake, kayaking, hiking, etc. on-site. Cade Lake looks like a fun stop for camping with disc golf. I'm curious if the camping is legit...this could be a great place to stop while traveling.
- Every hole is meaningful with little or no filler or fluff. I spent my round (thrown from the long tees) saying to myself, "Oh, well, now this must be the signature hole...wait no, this is obviously the signature hole, oh, this one is the signature SHORT hole, oh DAMN, THIS is the signature hole... " Quite the unexpected pleasure.

Pros:

The Deadwood disc golf course is one of the rare courses that is ENTIRELY wooded. Not a single wide open hole to be found. My kind of golf. It's $4 for a daily car pass for non county residents, but is well worth it for that price.

The baskets are DD Veteran's with a blue cage and red band. Beautiful looking targets. They catch great and are easy to spot in the woods. Some of the nicer baskets out there imo. One pin position per hole it appears.

The tees are plenty big enough. Two tees per hole. I like the rough finish on these. Very grippy surface. The difference in the placement of the longs compared to the shorts varies. Some are just a little longer back and offset. Mostly on the shorter holes. But it's quite the drastic difference from longs to shorts on most holes. We played the longs only, but we walked past numerous short tees. Plus both locations are shown on the tee signs.

Speaking of tee signs. These are very well done. They have the course name on the top. A basic, but very serviceable diagram of the hole, showning each tee area and a basic line to the pin. Next tee arrow/arrows by the basket on the diagram help with navigation. There's also red arrows pointing you in the direction of the next hole. Long and short arrows if they're in different directions. Great flow to the course. Starts and ends by the parking lot.

The section of the park this course is set up in is gorgeous. Gently rolling terrain that never is overwhelmingly strenuous, but hides the basket from the tee on some holes and offers rollaway potential aplenty. For the most part, a very well designed course (see cons). I was standing on top of a log in the swampy section off the fairway of 18 looking for a disc. I turned to my right to look in that direction and as I did so a hawk flew, I kid you not, 3 feet in front of me. Chest level, then landed about 25 feet over the other side of the trail and watched us search for the disc. Almost had a heart attack, but it was a cool experience. Lots of squirrels and chipmunks. Very out in the woods feeling.

Cons:

My biggest con here is that a couple fairways on the front half play down a winding path that is used by walkers and bikers. I nearly decapitated a kid on a bike. Well not really but shortly after my shot landed just off the fairway he came flying around the corner. Not good design on this hole. Hole 3 or 4 I think it was.

A few of the lines off the tee are kind of poke and hope. At least from the longs. I didn't have any problem with the design, but is worth mentioning, because some will be turned off by this.

The marshy area off the fairway on the last few holes wasn't too thick or even wet in late September. However I'd imagine it's very easy to lose a disc in the marsh in the spring or after heavy rains. Again not a con really, just worth noting.

Other Thoughts:

I was not disappointed in the least with this course. Only a few minutes off the tollway. Great place to get out of stretch the legs out if traveling through. If in the area, it's definitely worth a spin. Fun course in a beautiful park. Definitely recommend this one.

A the end of the day, I settled on a 3.5 rating. Which is very good. It's not quite "phenomenal", but it's close. I'd play it again in a heartbeat.

Wonderfully wooded forest course 2+ years

Reviewed: Updated: Played on:Aug 20, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

This is one of the few courses I've played that is in the woods front-to-back, all 18 baskets. Pristine, very technical, with tight lines and a ton of trees make nearly every shot challenging. There are two tees on most holes and they generally make the approach significantly different. Props to the course designer bc every hole felt unique.

The signage here is sturdy and detailed, with plenty of seating and a trash can at every hole. There are several short ace run shots. Very little chance to lose plastic except for on hole 16- the rough is a bit overgrown.

Cons:

Even though every hole is solid, my biggest gripe with Deadwood is it lacks a true signature hole. A couple come close, namely 18, but I would argue that none are truly elite compared to the rest.

A course map would be appreciated, although navigation was incredibly straightforward.

Other Thoughts:

Deadwood was an absolute blast to play. If I could make a single improvement, it would be adding some longer holes- I like a par 5 or two sprinkled in for that satisfying eagle opportunity.

The short tees are forgiving enough for amateurs to still have a good time while the longs add a decent amount of difficulty for more experienced players. If you're into technical, shorter holes, this course is totally worth the trip.

Pros:

This course will test your mid-range and short game with tough, narrow throw routes through trees. Excellent cement tee pads, signs and new Dynamic Disc Veteran baskets with red rims that are visible in dense woods. Large, well-done red signs help navigation by pointing out short and long tees. There are some additional course details such as gravel at Hole 11, a bridge crossing a marshy area at Hole 16, and neatly raked trails pointing the way to many of the baskets. Some lowland marshy hazards add some variety. This course is intermediate length from the long tees, but is more challenging than its length suggests. Not a crowded course when we were there, and appears to be a part of the park not used for other activities. A great choice on windy days where play at other nearby courses is more affected by weather. Hole 18 finishes the course with an epic downhill drive leading to a long trail bordering a low, wet area. Lots of woodpeckers and other wildlife.

Cons:

The entire course is located in dense woods, with few tunnel holes and no wide open holes. Some themes are repeated here from hole to hole, with some holes leaving a minimal impression. Occasionally the baskets are close together and may have you shooting at the wrong basket, though the signage helps this a bit. The lowland areas would make likely make this area very buggy in the summer months, and also means you might leave with muddy shoes.

Other Thoughts:

Despite being located in a flat area, the terrain bordering Cade Lake does provide some elevation changes and unique ridge side drives and upshots. Not sure whether or not this is a free course, but we left four dollars in the mail slot of the door of the park building just in case. A nice addition to an area with few other courses.

Pros:

Tough course will test your short game. Fun, challenging throw routes through thick woods. Good signs and large, cement tee pads. Has nice, large red signs indicating short or long tees. Some rolling hills give this course some features besides just being a walk through trails. Good course for windy weather. Holes 16 and 18 have ridge top tee shots wet hazardous areas.

Cons:

Some wet areas present disc loss hazards. Few grip-and-rip opportunities, with luck often being a factor. Some holes are forgettable, but remain challenging despite some short distances.

Other Thoughts:

Fun course with some challenging aspects. Good fun factor. Watch for the wet area past the tee for Hole 15.

Bugs...its Michigan summer though so what you expect

Other Thoughts:

Like the rough finish on pads. Nice signs. The rough is pretty rough in places but will get better with more action on it.

All in all great course! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 13, 2018 Played the course:once

Pros:

Lots of trees but well defined fairways reward well placed shots
Short tee holes seem shorter than most courses but I think that was a good design choice so as to not discourage new disc golfers
Good use of elevation to add extra challenge
Variety of shots needed to score well on this course

Cons:

Some of the elevation changes are very steep making it difficult to traverse
No bugs today but being wooded near water there could be days where the bugs are nasty

Other Thoughts:

I really like this course! The course designers did a good job making the short tees fun for more experienced players but not too punishing for newer players. The property the course is on also includes a modern campground on Cade lake so that is also a bonus!
