Pros:
The lake and bridges at Decatur County Park make a wonderful backdrop for a good nine hole disc golf course scaled for recreational players to enjoy a few challenges, a little variety, and the chance of a gut check shot getting near the water. Starting out counter-clockwise with long and short tees poured 5'x10' in level concrete aiming at decent discatcher baskets, the hole distances range from 122' to 264' from the shorts and 181' to 386' from the longs. The fun thing is, that after throwing the ace run shortie on hole 4, and heading back down the path and across the bridge to hole five, you realize it's a self-contained island that constitutes the fairway of the longest hole on the course. Keep it in the middle!
There is a slight tendency to favor left to right lines out here, and they used obstacles (on hole 3), and a wee bit of elevation (hole 3) and the long tee on 8, where they could. The course has solid amenities and signage. Overall, you'll not have a competition level round here, but a pretty, and approachable play.
Cons:
There were a few places where players will need to use wisdom and coexist, like when you throw around, over or through the tree wall up the hill to hole three, be advised that a graveled 'pad' with picnic tables lies just 20' past the basket. On hole 5 (long), do not throw if the shelter is in use (a shanked drive there would not be a pretty sight). And it seemed that, in season, the geese lay claim to hole 6 (goose crap all over the tee, the fairway, and they congregate by the basket).
The chance of the intended audience (casual to rec) losing a disc in the water is actually kind of high, as is the chance of a rhbh hyzer on hole 1 heading out over the road. There isn't a whole lot of nasty rough in play, however. The course was limited to a smallish space, so no big holes (if you're looking for that sort of thing).
It would be nice to have a 'next tee' sign after 4 and 5, for first timers. (Go left, down the path, and across the bridge to the 5th tee, and across the blue bridge to your right for the 6th).
Other Thoughts:
Since there wasn't one on here, I sketched a very basic course flow diagram that may not be perfectly accurate, but should help you get around (I don't often go to UDisc, since DGCR is a more useful site for me).
