Disappointingly Boring 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 21, 2020 Played the course:2-4 times

Pros:

Navigation between holes 8/10. There are posts marking each tee, and it's very open so you can usually see the next tee from the previous basket. 13 is tucked in the trees and would be tough without a map. There are alternate tees on most(maybe all?) holes that are tough to find.

Course maintenance 8/10. Course is very clean and most of the time it's well mowed.

Finding discs 8/10. Everything should be easy to find except holes 16 and 17, where there's a decent chance to lose a disc in the lake. Holes 1 and 18 have very short water clears.

Variety of distances 7/10. While there are a lot of holes in the 250'-330' range, there is enough variety in distance with hole 17 and especially hole 5 being long, and several on the back nine being under 200'.

Navigation on holes 6/10. Sometimes it can be confusing when you can see a lot of baskets from the same tee since there aren't any fairways or anything, but it's mostly self explanatory.

Baskets/Tees 6/10. Baskets are good, tees are natural and a little uneven but not the worst.

Cons:

No alternate basket positions, 0/10.

Decisionmaking 1/10. Most holes are completely open, so there isn't much to make you think when selecting your throw.

Variety of openness 2/10. Most holes are completely wide open off the tee. 13 is technical to the point where the only real option from the back tee the only option is to just throw an overhand. 16 and 17 are the only other relatively technical shots and bring the lake into play. 12 has the telephone poles as a cool double mando.

Variety of shot paths 2/10. Hole 8 favors a left to right, 16 requires a slight right to left (but not too much or you'll be in the lake), 12 and 17 require straight shots. Everything else is totally open.

Reasonably challenging all levels 2/10. Beginners may enjoy all but 16 and 17 as a good course to learn how their discs fly. For any players with experience at all the course will be extremely boring. The only challenge for these players will be the wind, which there is likely to be a lot of with how exposed it is.

Use of obstacles 3/10. I appreciate the effort to bring the lake into play, and the use of the telephone pole on hole 12 and the attempt at a technical shot on 13, but I feel the designer missed many opportunities to make more of the other holes more interesting. This course probably could have been a much better 9 hole that could have some of the obstacles on each hole, but it seems they felt the need to throw in filler holes to get 18.

Elevation 3/10. There isn't much, but there is at least some, which is more than I can say about a lot of courses in the area. The little elevation is at least used with some variety.

Comfort 4/10. Some benches would be nice. Very little shade until the end of the round. It's at least well mowed and on the shorter side, and there isn't much worry of hitting non-disc golfers.

Other Thoughts:

Challenge 2/10.

When I first came to this course shortly after it was put in, I was expecting much more based on the reviews that were up at the time. I was very disappointed by how few of the holes had any obstacles at all. This course is close to a 2 for me, adding concrete or some other type of pads and more informative tee signs would get it there. Anything higher than that would require a massive overhaul of the design. I do hope this course will help attract some new people to the game though.

Boring 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Mar 26, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

It is wide open. There are not many obstacles. The last few holes are near water, so you have to be careful, but the rest of the holes are clear. There are very few trees. Most shots are straight shots to the hole.

Cons:

It is boring. If there were more trees it would make you play around them. Everything is wide open. The tees are muddy. The brackets are not numbered so it can be difficult to know which basket you ate playing.

Other Thoughts:

There are better courses near by. Play them

Beginner Friendly w/character 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Aug 12, 2019 Played the course:5+ times

Pros:

This is a fun course! It is relatively short, so big arms will be able to run every basket but number 5. That means there are lots of birdies to be had for a 950 rated player. I have several aces on this course and have managed to shoot a -9, so you can get you some birdies;) One of the nice things about an open course is that you can throw a backhand or a forehand at almost every basket, so even though it doesn't force you, you can still get good shot variation during your round if you want to. Beginners will also like the course because it is mostly open shots with almost every hole at 320ft or shorter, so par is pretty doable for even low level players. There is one very cool tee shot that runs along the pretty little pond, and one tee shot that is a semi-tunnel shot. The double mando on hole 12 is a unique feature that adds some fun. Easy to get around because the tee signs are very visible. Baskets are solid and in good shape, and it is a clean and quiet piece of property. Two sets of tees if you want to change things up.

Cons:

Dirt tee boxes that have been in use for a long time and are very worn down, causing them to get muddy and stay muddy for a while. No distances listed on the signs, so it's UDisc or the calibrated eyeball. Not a lot of character. The first hole only has one tree on it, and so does the second hole. It gets a little better toward the back, and they used what they could, but it is pretty plain. I couldn't find a lot of the alternate tees. I have played here several times when it obviously hadn't been mowed in several weeks.

Other Thoughts:

Overall this is a fun course that provides just enough challenge to keep it interesting, but it is friendly enough for beginners. If it was the only course in town I would be sad, but as it is I think it creates a nice compliment to the course selection around here. If I was visiting from out of town I wouldn't put it on my list, but for us locals it is worth a play a couple times a year.

Good Learning Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 17, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

Being a beginner to disc golf, I felt that this was a good learning course. It is a shorter distance layout, that allows you to work on the fundamentals of your throws. You can focus more on shot placement and flight characteristics rather than needing to overpower your throws for distance. The course layout makes good use of a smaller area to fit 18 holes into, and accommodates large open areas, as well as baskets that are place to work on anyhyzer/ hyzer shots. There are straight tunnel shots, a couple of elevation changes and a few wooded baskets.

Cons:

The tee boxes are nothing mode than a worn patch of dirt next to a marker. This can cause them to be nothing but mud depending on how recent a rain. Ticks are present and at least one basket and one tee box are nestled right inside a closely wooded area. The trees are evergreens and gooseberry and can form troublesome boundaries should a disc get lost or stuck. Because most of the trees line the perimeter, and several baskets are in the wide open, wind can play havoc with your discs. Probably a good learning tool.

Other Thoughts:

A good course for beginners. I definitely will go back because I need the practice and it gives plenty of chances for learning without frustration.

Eastminster Church DGC 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Dec 24, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

The course is mostly set short, but many of the short holes have technical approaches which provide for interesting shots. The few longer holes are enjoyable. The designer of the course did a good job of getting 18 holes into a relatively small area. I think this course would be awesome for winter glow, but as I am not from Wichita, maybe that's already happening.

Cons:

The tee pads are dirt and grass, but not terrible.

Other Thoughts:

I liked this course a lot and finished by myself in under an hour. I will definitely hit it again when I visit my in-laws.

Glad to have a course on the east side of wichita! 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Jun 27, 2015 Played the course:once

Pros:

Nice and open fairly short great for midrange and fairway shot practicing

Cons:

Lots of mosquitos,ticks, and chiggers
Don't make a bad throw on the southend of the course those gooseberry trees are unforgiving!

Other Thoughts:

I'm really excited to see this course grow and get permanent pads and alternate locations. I hope to also see longer tees in the future. Great course none the less.
