Pros:
EB Holman DGC is a 9-holer that plays around the elementary school of the same name, near Houghton on Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula.
The course design does a nice job of using a couple of different wooded areas at the edge of the school grounds. There are some slight elevation changes that come into play on a couple of holes. My favorite hole was #3, which is a simple little dogleg left playing gently uphill - but with a treacherous little drop off behind the basket. A couple of the later holes are mostly open to provide some contrast. Overall, a nice mix of shorter holes here. The distances range from about 150' to 330'.
The baskets are Chainstars that look brand new. The tee signs have a satellite map of the hole, plus the hole number/distance/suggested line. There are some nice navigational signs nailed to trees wherever needed. The only place where I could have used another arrow is between #7 and 8 where there is a longer walk across a playground area.
Cons:
Holes 5 and 8 play pretty close to each other, and also close to a sand volleyball court. It's all line-of-sight so not a huge issue.
The last hole is fun, but an odd design choice given the target audience. It plays 320', with the first 200'-250' off the tee taken up by a low-lying area covered in thick, lose-your-disc weeds. This area probably is not generally wet, but it could be in the spring or after a good rain. Recreational players who can throw a RHBH hyzer 225' or so can clear it easily, and it's possible to lay up off to the left and avoid the rough. But just kind of a weird ending hole here for students. It also plays back away from the parking lot area which is inconvenient. I would rather see another hole in the woods by #7 (instead of the relatively long walk between #6 and #7), and then use the current #8 as the finishing hole.
Most holes are pretty much flat, and there is not much challenge for any players beyond recreational level.
The tee pads are natural with wooden kick plates. #7's kick plate (and tee sign) seemed to be missing as of my visit.
No trash cans, benches, practice basket, or porta potty. There is a little kiosk near hole 1 at the parking lot, but it didn't have any DG-specific info on it that I saw.
Other Thoughts:
Cell phone service is spotty here.
You should assume the course is unavailable when school is in session.
Overall, this is a decent 9 holer. Nothing to go out of your way to play, but I enjoyed my time on site. I'd hit it again if I were staying in the Houghton area for a few days and had gotten my fill of the better courses in the area (Calumet Lake, Constellation Farmstead, and the new-look MTU).
