The Yellow Course 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:May 23, 2020 Played the course:once

Pros:

The Yellow Falling Creek Disc Golf Course is really the main one here . Some good amenities are here . First , there is a lot of parking space . Park as close to the barn as you can . Second , there is a large kiosk with map near hole #1 to help navigate you ( print the map , anyway ) . There is a nice bathroom before you descend to the course and even a place to fill your water bottle . Nice Stone benches throughout different areas of the course . Nice touch . Tee pads are wood lined decorative pavers , about 3 1/2 X 10 ? I hear they get slick after a rain or early morning but I never slipped during my round . They look nice . The signage is good , with pin placements and distance and par + hole number and flight path . The baskets are yellow banded Discatchers , in good shape . They spray painted the bottom rung of the baskets to point you to the next tee . I don't know why more course use this procedure . It can help so much with navigation .
The first few holes start out in the open . Your first hole throws downhill to a basket under a tree and flanked by a group of rocks . You have to turn to your right to play hole #2 It follows a semi circle around with some clever pin placements for the first 8 holes . The next holes are not woods , but not open either . A good mixture of right/left and up down holes for you , along with tunnel shots and creek throws ( not deep ) . The course seems popular with the locals . Not less that 6 tees being used at once . It's not overly long or tight , and might bore some of the better area players unless they are practicing specifics . But the all of the rest , it's blending of unique shots raises the fun factor here .
There are some fun holes here . #4 comes from teeing off on the edge of the woods to splitting some trees to the hole , about 435' and a little uphill . #9 is a putter run downhill to an opening just over a creek bed . #5 has a low canopied row of trees all in a line alongside the fairway to the basket on the other side . 10 goes uphill to a doorway to the basket sitting in the woods . 17 goes downhill into a doorway with a creek over it . If you reach the other side clean , then you have to hyzer into the woods about 50' to a well protected basket .There are also 2 extra holes after leaving the woods , making a total of 20 . 19 is a long uphill drive with trees to make you shoot low . You have to walk back and to your left a ways to 20 , which is an open enough 240' throw with a backstop behind it . Some wildlife here . Saw deer , some squirrels and rabbits . This course has a good design with fun in mind . Disc Risk : low to moderate . The park is weel cared for , well mowed , and the creek is low . Signature hole #18 downhill to the woods ( 355') .I finished this part of the course in about and hour and 10 minutes . Figure a group of 4 maybe 2:20 .

Cons:

Dual tees in usage . All 18 of the first tees are used for both courses . There may be a wait on a busy day . Previous viewers say to exercise caution when throwing from the pavers when wet . If so , throw from the grass to be safe . Bugs can be bad here . Spray , then check for tick some time after the round . There may be lack of challenge from the pros or tournament tested , but I think there are holes here that they ,may like .

Other Thoughts:

Do not look for the so called split off of holes after #9 . When I played , and I was with one of the course builders , he said that they combined the back 9 tees with the alternate baskets . So you will share the same pavers with all first 18 holes . He also told me that the park was going to pull the red baskets in the future . This resembles some course layouts with the multiple pins that I played in the Orlando area , except they count the course as just one . But it makes this course stand out with all of the other courses in the area and will keep the players here longer , because hole locations vary from pin to pin . I was here for 2 1/2 hours total and glad I played both courses . If you enjyed it , make sure you email the park board and tell them . My Recommendation A good course to spend your part of the day playing . A little too much for dates or families , but just right for the locals , newbies , enthusiasts , course baggers , ( 2 for 1 ) intermediates and even some good holes for the pros to work on their game . PLAY IT !!!

Straightforward 2+ years

Reviewed: Played on:Jul 6, 2019 Played the course:once

Pros:

- A nicely maintained park, with freshly mown grass on the open front, easy navigation with painted basket spokes pointing the way, and clear tee signs.
- Lots of opportunities to throw enormous hyzers and anyzers over the trees, if you have that power. If not, you can still play smart into the landing zones and then stick your approaches for pars, for a different but also fun challenge.
- I loved Hole 17, which unlike most of the rest of the course (see below), required some creative thinking to attack. Your drive has to be carefully placed, either on a high or low line, to set you up for the low tunnel shot approach.

Cons:

- Not a particularly creative course to me. The baskets are generally right in front you, there's an obvious route for your skill level, and you just try to execute it. Not many opportunities to flex your creativity. Imagine your local small open 9-hole course, and stretch it out to 400 ft. holes, and that's kind of what this feels like. I vastly prefer Moneta Park for something between Roanoke and Lynchburg.

Other Thoughts:

I believe the red/yellow layouts have been merged recently, as they now use the same teepads on all 18 holes, with different basket options, as you'd expect. May need to merge the courses here on DGCR as well.

Peanut Butter Cedar Time 2+ years drive by

Reviewed: Played on:Oct 21, 2017 Played the course:once

Pros:

For reference. This course is laid out unconventially as there are two layouts (yellow/red) that share the front 9's pads but have their own baskets (discatchers/chainstars). On the back 9 they split off and have their own separate pads/baskets. I did not have time to play both and chose to play the yellows on the back 9. Normally I would not review the course having not seen the other back 9 but because there is only one other review at this time you're getting this.

TL;DR Course is laid out weird here's my take on the yellow portion.

Layout - Most of the course plays through a sloped meadow that flows down towards a tiny creek and is dotted with 20-30' tall cedars that create most of the obstacles.

Some decent elevation changes throughout the course as you go up and down the slope.

Given what is there I think the front 9 does a good job of creating different shots and forcing different lines. It finds some places that force you to hit gaps instead of just throwing over everything.

There's a fair share of big hyzers/annys around everything but the basket locations force you to be accurate with the greens guarded by the cedars making some putts almost impossible depending on where you land.

There's one par 4 on the front and it's a good one. You have to hit a gap with power and work the disc, or go over and risk fading out away from the basket or losing D from throwing high.

Overall the front 9 has some solid fun factor even though it's never that difficult. You get to rip one a few times and a lot of it is user choice so you can pick how you to play it from a variety of possibilities.

From this point on I am only speaking to the yellow layout and it's back 9.

I went yellow because it looked like it was going in the woods. Well it did for a second and then you throw out of the woods. I liked that hole; it made you throw with a bit of power uphill and hit a gap.

The next hole I enjoyed on the back 9 was #16. It's a long par four where you throw out of a tight gap of cedars for a bit and then have a bit of an uphill approach to a nice looking green. Not terribly difficult but a great looking and fun hole.

#17 is probably the best hole on the yellow course. It' s another par 4 where you throw over a valley through a gap in cedars while hitting a pretty small area to have a good look at a thin line in to actual woods where the basket curls up and to the right.

I'll also say that for the most part the entire course flowed really well and I never got confused between the two layouts so they executed that very well.

Atmosphere - This is a quaint little park with a playground and an old barn by the parking lot. It's pretty much all meadow dotted with cedars so it's got looks even though it lacks serious wow. The back 9 is much more secluded feeling and is thicker in the cedar department.

I also saw a groundhog in a hole on hole 2. Watch out for his numerous holes.

Equipment - I liked how they did the multiple baskets being different brands so it's easy to distinguish. Making the discatchers with the yellow band the longer ones was also smart given they were usually more obscured from the tee.

The signs were informative and pretty accurate from a map perspective. They also listed where the next tee would be in relation the baskets which is a nice touch. The baskets also have spokes painted red that show you the direction you need to go to find the next tee.

There's some cool granite slab benches in a few places as well.

Cons:

Layout - The biggest problem with courses like this is that you can usually just throw over the trees and disregard the intended line. This happens a lot here, mostly on the back 9. I didn't play the reds but I'm guessing it's more of the same because it's in the same general area.

From 11-15 you play holes where the line doesn't make that much sense given how thick the cedars are and you they're all short enough to just throw a thumber/tommy over the top. There's a couple holes in this stretch where it's almost impossible to throw the intended line because branches have grown so far in to it.

Some of the greens are so protected by cedars with branches all the way to the ground that you can be 15' from the basket and literally no way to make a putt.

The yellow back 9 to me, outside of 16 & 17, just wasn't that interesting and really let me down after a pleasurable front 9.

I also don't understand why they put the two baskets on the front 9 so close together in most cases. Seems like they could of done a bit more to give each some individuality if they're going for the "hey it's two courses" thing.

Again I didn't see the red layout's back 9 but I have to think maybe they should of just kept going with the one pad two baskets and used all that land to create a more interesting back 9 than what I played on the yellow.

Atmosphere - Only thing really is that the front 9 plays near the other park stuff and it doesn't give you that secluded feeling.

Equipment - The pads were the biggest con for me here. They're brick which wasn't really the problem but in most cases they were just too short and elevated so you couldn't get a decent run up on to them and had to take in to consideration falling off of them on the follow through.

The course map at the beginning needs an update not only because of the new dual layouts but because it's literally falling apart.

Other Thoughts:

I had higher expectations for this course going on. I have had several people tell me it was a top course in the area and even though I liked the front 9 it was a 3 tops at that point. I think there's some fun factor and it certainly is a nice looking course but it is too lacking in to many areas to get a higher score from me.

I think some of the problems I found with it could be fixed with simple maintenance by cleaning up the greens and lines a bit.

I do recommend playing this course if you live in the area and especially if you're newer to disc golf. I wouldn't say it's a must hit if you're road tripping but I wouldn't tell you not to play it either.
