Pros:
- respectable length fitting in as many holes as the park could support
- well maintained park
- plenty of street parking
- practice basket
- great incorporation of water hazard
- Discatcher baskets generally in good shape
- designer tried to incorporate elevation change wherever possible
Cons:
- may be some crowds from nearby baseball diamond, but this seems unlikely to be an issue most days
- several low lying water retention areas likely to cause wet feet if you aren't careful
- walking paths throughout park could pose safety hazard
- practice basket mount height is super weird
- natural tees
- tee signs are worn and have no maps
- limited obstacles on most holes, except near water hazard
- elevation change is very limited
- openness of most of course could case significant challenges on windy days
- pars are way too high, with several par 4s and hole 12 as a wide open par 5
- no additional amenities (benches, garbage cans, restrooms, etc.)
- no next tee signs
Other Thoughts:
This course is currently pretty low on reviews and appears to be a bit overrated. I agree with The Valkyrie Kid that the course description needed some updating - so I went ahead and did it. With the first hole being 141 feet, I thought "this is going to be a really short course!" However, this is by far the shortest hole, and it's a modest but respectable length after that. I think hole 1 could have been made longer anyway.
I almost want to give this course a 2, but it's not quite there. The 12 holes instead of 9 is nice, but I feel like hole 2 shouldn't even exist or should be relocated, as its in a low lying area that will almost always be wet - it looks designed for water retention. Alternatively, I feel like the walk between 7 and 8 along the river could have had another hole worked in.
The biggest issues with this course are the natural tees, mediocre tee signs, and lack of obstacles. It's an ok course, but not very exciting to play. Navigation was mostly easy enough, but I always find this a bit challenging in a wide open course with baskets everywhere, no real tees, and small tee signs - which direction should I head next? Next tee signs would go a long way towards correcting this.
Hole 3 throws over the river but there's really no line through the trees to do this. It can be done, but I feel like there's a lot of luck involved. I'd rather see a clear line to try to hit.
The design of this course is pretty good for the space, it just doesn't have any wow factor whatsoever. I played because I was out in the area; I wouldn't go out of my way to seek it out. Some of the rough down by the water holes can get a bit thick, but mostly this isn't a major issue.
I don't think any of the holes on this course should be above par 3, except for perhaps hole 12, which is 454'. It is still wide open for the most part, but perhaps could warrant a par 4 due to length (it's currently a par 5). As a final note, the practice basket had the basket part mounted really high on the pole, so the opening to hit the chains was maybe 12" - it was really strange. I've seen plenty of baskets installed too high or too low, but usually the rim to basket distance is pretty constant. I guess it will force you to pinpoint your accuracy during warmups!
There are walking paths and a baseball field in the park, although there was virtually nobody there when I was (Sunday mid-day). I suspect this park isn't terribly busy, and most of the disc golf has an area of its own, but there could be safety concerns if a lot of walkers were out, etc.
