Pros:
1) Lots of elevation on the first half of this course with mostly very dramatic elevation changes. Does well to keep the short distances interesting.
2) Tee pads are nice. Grippy and amply sized for the distances on the course. Plus, there are two of them on every hole. Also pretty nice tee signs, contain all the usual info as well as some uniquely styled maps. Some of them are wrong though, due to small changes in design over the years.
3) Tight and technical. The shortness can allow you to get away with only a forehand or backhand, but having them both will definitely be useful. Hole 17 is the highlight of the course, a short par 4 with a tight dogleg that plays along side a shallow creek that is usually played OB. Hole 1 is also a great way to start the round; very open and quite short but way downhill. Gets the round started off with a bang. Most of the rest of the holes range from average to meh, but nothing is what I'd call bad, but hole 4 is definitely awkward.
4) Practice area is always a plus. But the basket isn't great and it's in a small space so only good for putting warm-up. No approach or driving practice before tee 1.
Cons:
1) The course is generally very short. You can get away with just a putter, maybe a mid, on all but a couple of the holes from the short tees.
2) While the long tees to add a little more distance to the course, it's not much. And in some places they tee locations are just straight up bad. Hole 3 specifically there is almost no way to go down the tunnel from the long tee and the only real option is a blind spike hyzer over the trees. Holes 2 and 4 also share pads. 2s short is 4s long and vice versa. Almost no one plays the longs so this doesn't really cause issues, but worth mentioning.
3) The general condition of the course/land isn't great. Tees and baskets are fine, but there is usually a bit of litter around and there are many many places that get very muddy after rain/in the spring; much more so than other courses. Erosion is also very very bad. The bridge that used to go over the creek on 8 collapsed recently. The long pin placement down the hill on 7 has been retired for years due to the erosion along the creek and the condition of the creek bank on hole 17 isn't great either. It almost makes it more of a nuisance than a hazard.
4) Lots of repetition on the back 9. All of the holes (except 17 and 18) are very short, flat, and very cramped together. But, there isn't really anything else they could have done unless they went for a lower number of holes for the layout. Either way, though, when it's busy this leads to more backups than necessary and you'll find yourself at risk of being hit from errant shots on adjacent holes.
Other Thoughts:
Overall, a very overwhelmingly average disc golf experience. The front holes are tight and technical where getting in the rough will punish you hard, but nothing unfair. Everything from 9 to 15 are birdie-or-die holes and are generally uninspiring. 16 is short but quite technical, an early kick can get you in a bad place but par is almost always saveable. 17 and 18 are good challenges to end the round. I feel the actual rating should be closer to a 2.75, but because of the short repetitive holes in the middle of the course and the long tees adding almost nothing to the layout on most holes I'm bumping it down to a 2.5 instead of up to a 3.0. If you are in the area and have some time, I'd recommend a stop. But if you are from out of town or only have time for one course in the area I'd recommend hitting up O'Hauser Park on the other side of town in Menasha rather than here or the other courses around Appleton.
Update: Review re-written and rating lowered from 3.5 to 2.5.
